Game Boy Camera is a really good pick.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. You have my fullest support. Making stop-motion videos and figuring out all the mini-games was so much fun as a kid. It had such an uncanny feeling that almost no Nintendo game has ever captured since.

re: quake 2 multi, it was legit despised by uk quake folks at launch but everyone fell in love with q2dm1 when the point release came out and a couple of the more popular mods fixed the relatively glacial pace

getting nostalgic for practising leading my shots ever so slightly with the railgun to compensate for 150 ping

agree quake’s single player is massively underrated

I’m glad I got to experience q2dm in the brief period using a trackball made you a god compared to everyone else’s shitty mice

Metroid Prime – Right up to the release of this game people were wondering whether or not Metroid would work in three dimensions. There was consternation that it wasn’t being developed in-house by Nintendo but instead given to a third party studio, Retro. A common worry at the time was that they were just going to make a Metroid skinned FPS and it would hurt the chances of a true sequel to the series getting made in the future. Fortunately Retro surprised everyone by making an actual Metroid game in three dimensions. It looked like an FPS at first glance but it didn’t control or play like one. Instead it was more like a first person Ocarina of Time thanks to the aggressive ā€œz-targetingā€ lock-on system employed to keep your aimed snapped to an enemy. Ultimately I think Metroid: Fusion is my favorite Metroid but I’m keeping Metroid Prime here because it deserves the spot just as much as any of the others.

Carrion – Fairly recent and maybe I’m still in the honeymoon phase but I really liked this. It’s got a really cool look and controlling the amorphous monster feels great. I especially love how the game tells its story completely in-game and without the use of cutscenes or audio logs or even any text boxes of any kind. You’re just some kind of alien/science experiment thing that escapes and adapts and kills and eats everyone you come across. This is Warsaw-based Phobia Game Studio’s second game, their first one being Butcher. I’ve not played it but Butcher is a 2D shooter taking place in large screen-space levels. You use the mouse/control stick to look in 360 degrees and target the enemies. In a way it looks a lot like the control scheme for Carrion except in you’re shooting bullets instead of tentacles. I’ll probably check out Butcher at some point but I’m really keeping my eye out for their next effort.

Rez – My first exposure to Rez was from the gamegirladvance article on the trance vibrator. That was back in 2002. I would not actually play Rez until probably 2005 or 2006 when the PS2 version got a limited rerelease. For a few years Rez was kind of a mythical thing to me because it wasn’t easily available at the time. I didn’t have a dreamcast and didn’t feel like tracking the game down on the aftermarket and paying extra for it. I had kind of resigned myself to the idea that I’d probably never actually experience the game so many people kept gushing about (I just realized this is maybe a gross pun in the context of how I started this entry) so when I heard it was getting a reprinting I snapped it up to see what all the fuss was about. It’s a pretty cool game! A 3D rail shooter where you fly through an environment shooting at waves of enemies and big boss characters, kind of like the Panzer Dragoon series, but in this case the environment is a Tron-like cyberspace you’re surfing through on a mission to blast apart the corrupted bits of the computer AI that manages the network itself. Each of the game’s five stages features music by various composers known for their electronic dance music with the soundtrack itself featuring ten songs total. The sound effects for shooting and destroying enemies are also engineered to jive with the music so that the music, sound effects and visuals all blend together in an attempt at simulating, reproducing or invoking digital synesthesia. A few months ago I played it in PSVR and it was still a really cool, fun little experience.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader – Sequel to the hit N64 Rogue Squadron. The visuals were amazing and still hold up really well today. You can do the Death Star run in an X-wing just like Luke Skywalker and everything is there just like in the movies. Factor 5 made these games and after this they did the dragon-riding game Lair on PS3 which was very hyped but ultimately disappointed. They closed shop in 2011 which is a shame. They also made Mega Turrican for the Mega Drive/Genesis.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Absolutely tremendous game. A true open ended adventure. There’s still so much I haven’t done in the game and I’ve already done quite a lot. I still haven’t found all the shrines. I don’t even think I’ve found half the shrines. Turns out most of them are quite well hidden! I hope the sequel is as good.

Mario Paint – Played this a lot as a kid. Drawing, painting, stamping characters into scenes, making music with the music maker, and swatting so many flies in the fly game. I think Nintendo should make a Mario Paint 2 that teaches you pixel art, sprite making and animation. What if Nintendo made their own version of Aseprite basically. Seem like a no-brainer but then again Mario Maker 2 wasn’t quite as light-the-world-on-fire as they were maybe expecting it to be so who knows.

Peggle – If you haven’t played one of these Peggle games yet then seriously please do yourself a favor and check one out sometime. There’s a free to play Peggle on phones that’s pretty good and if you like it there’s a couple more on consoles and PC you can buy because trust me, once you start on Peggle you won’t be able to resist the desire to get more Peggle in your life. You’re just firing little orbs at pegs in a pattern on a peg board. That’s the gist. Pegs are blue and orange with orange being worth more points and depending on the type of stage causing other effects to nearby blue pegs. The pegs light up when hit and them after a few moments pop for points. You only have so many orbs and you’re trying to hit all those pegs. There’s purple pegs worth more points and green pegs that have special game-changing effects to the orb or the other surrounding pegs. For real just play a Peggle!

Bubble Bobble – ā€œNow it is the beginning of a fantastic story! Let us make a journey to the cave of monsters! Good Luck!ā€ is how the opening screen of Bubble Bobble NES reads shortly before Bub (and Bob if you’ve got a partner) descend in their bubbles to the cave (game screens) below. 150 stages of bubble-blowing, enemy-capturing, bubble-popping, fruit-collecting await you. Every time I see the characters or a screenshot or just the words ā€œBubble Bobbleā€ I instantly hear the music and sound effects.

Warning Forever – An indie shmup from 2003. You tackle mechanical bosses made out of multiple segments or body parts and have to completely destroy the whole boss within the time limit to move on to the next stage. Then, depending on how you killed the previous boss, the next boss will adapt itself to increase it’s defenses from your prior strategy. You only have one weapon but you can adjust the firing arc so that the bullets fly out in a fixed or variable width, from very narrow to very wide. There’s no ending it just goes on… forever.

Desert Golf – Another game that just goes on… forever. A simple game about hitting a ball into a hole. Sometimes less is truly more.

Thinking about it yeah Rez is definitely better than the Panzer Dragoon or Star Fox games.

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long, but this take is definitely going to get me to finally play Rez this weekend.

Do all of the Metroid Prime games play like this?

The second one did at least. I never played the third. By the time they ported to Wii they added the quasi-mouse look ability with the remote and since I only ever played the GameCube games I don’t really know how the more recent versions control.

Huh I did not suspect this about those games.

I personally prefer Prime 2 for being the weird spiky one of the subseries that tried weird shit and felt like an extremely hostile alien planet.

Metroid Prime is still pretty great though.

Can’t believe I forgot about Rez! Synaesthesia in spades.

I’ve put 80 hours into this game, much of which was spent playing minigames to build the same things over and over for money. It’s such a dumb concept (Single player MMO) but it’s so physically pleasing to play and the music is wonderful. I will almost certainly put another 150+ hours into this game before I die.
