Katamari Damacy vs. Shadow of the Colossus (2006)
2/3s of my PS2 holy trinity (Rez being the third). Katamari takes it
Tetris: The Absolute: The Grandmaster PLUS 2 vs. Killer7
I’m holding The Line. Killer7. Did I already use one of these threads to mention the time a very central casting classic nerd added me on FB after I kicked his ass at TGM a couple times at a nerdcon? Dude’s whole feed was alt right posts. That has nothing to do with the merits of the game, but was a way for me to flash my TGM credentials. Gameboy Tetris is still the one true path for me.
Demon’s Souls (2009) vs. OutRun 2
I feel more strongly about Outrun 1 being my Outrun and Space Harrier being my super scaler, than I do about Dark Souls 1 being my souls over Demon’s. So Demon’s Souls takes it.
Dark Souls vs. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Zelda 1 (well established as my favorite game ever, I hope it doesn’t get paired against Quake 1) is still in play so, I feel guilt free with going with my instinct and supporting Dark Souls. Verily.
DOOM / DOOM II vs. Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger’s structure is still something super unique for the genre and worthy of all the praise it gets, but Doom is Doom. The explosion of the mapping and modding communities, online deathmatches, congressional hearings. Doom is such a landmark game, and it’s still something I fire up to replay regularly.
Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Mario World rules. Mario 1 rules. Mario Land rules. But as I’ve said before Mario 3 is just sort of ok. Raiden all the way.
Earthbound vs. Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
My dirty secret with Earthbound is thanks to playing it twice as a rental and not owning it til the PS1 $15 clearance game years I’ve never finished that final section. My dirtier secret with SMT3 is despite owning it for years and years I’ve never even fired it up despite knowing I’d love it. Earthbound’s weird suburban Dragon Warrior vibe takes it.
Shadow of the Colossus, killer7, Demon’s souls, dark souls, chrono trigger, metal gear solid 2, God Hand.
Boring choices maybe but they are solid choices. If I had to pick a number one at this point it would be between k7, Demon’s and god hand.
Rooting for GB Camera and Riven in the loser’s bracket.
These kinds of popularity contests don’t really capture that chromatic nature of appreciating multiple titles within a given medium. I don’t mean like having a Canon but picking any one of these in isolation and out of context feels weird at this point. There is no best or favourite game only an internal pallete.
i like smashing two totally unlike games into each other and seeing which one breaks under the pressure, it means nothing but i also like to smash transformers together until their limbs come off
idk what i’m gonna do with doom vs chrono trigger. in these situations I usually just make a meta pick, and we have a lot of jrpgs (most of which I vote for) and no FPSes. but like voting against chrono trigger feels like a sin
I didn’t literally mean none, but yeah we only got two in the whole bracket and they’re both by the same people. dog days is a cover shooter, that’s in the exact opposite situation: I will vote against it purely out of hatred for the genre
There’s not really a great way to adjust the individual-poll bracket format in a way that correctsi its shortcomings so to me embracing them is the fun part. Continually asking questions in a vacuum like “hey is Chrono Trigger better or worse than Jedi Academy” is a great way to get a really entertaining list of games ordered in alternating series of “that makes sense” and “wait how did this one place so low/high?”.
yeah i am paying zero mind to any metas in this, it is purely two enter one leaves with the chief determinant being ‘which one of these did i play more and harder’
