Yeah, I think I’ve internalized all those rules but they remain in my conscious and us usual I have a hard time doing any thinking in the faster instinctual zone.
But it’s a struggle that I enjoy and muddle through and catch glimpses of beauty in even as they move farther away from the pain/pleasure balance I’m supposed to be experiencing.
It’s interesting that I’m able to describe the mechanics of action combat systems to people and analyze their purpose and effect but only perform them in games running at below-average speed.
Like any skill it’s a varying subroutine for all; I think also like most anything else though, focusing specifically on programming your reaction time, second to just simply playing tons and tons of it will sharpen the tango.
There’s enough overlap here that if anyone wants more deflection ninja madness and hasn’t played through Revengeance yet, well…it’s hyper Metal Gear indulgence, not very long and extremely fun imo.
I’m whining here but in general I rate my skill at subconscious training significantly below average; I’m general slow to speak and react in normal life situations.
I too have often found myself able to understand a game system better than I could execute it. Bloodborne was a difficult experience for me because so many fights were “I know exactly what I’m supposed to do but I don’t feel physically able to do it and any mistakes I make are punished by instant death”
I think the ~30% overpower the player could get through careful exploration (read: taking 3+ hours for each level) bought me a cushion I’ve been relying on these past 10 years and I’m feeling its absence
yes yes yes this is always my problem with Souls games in particular. When it does fall away to one of my rare moments of victory is beautiful, but it’s also…rare
I definitely hope we get something cool DLC wise like Bloodborne. And while I’m totally on the “From should quit doing sequels” train, the ending I got certainly had a good hook for one.
Got two generals today, along with bosses Lady Butterfly, the armored guy and Giraffe Centipede (or was it the other way round?), the last two of which are certainly huge deflect exams which I eventually had to play like a rythm game. Earlier today they all seemed insurmountable, and it’s crazy to see how your perception of them changes once you figure out what they’re about.
