the more i play mega cd night striker, the more stupid i think the critics at the time of its release were. the super low resolution was a weird choice, when there are plenty of other high speed sprite scaling games on mega cd that didn’t need to do it, but it’s got a charm all its own.
also, the guy who reviewed it for sega power even said the music was bad, and have you heard the night striker soundtrack? what a stupid cunt. and he thought it was the third game in a series.

I had that issue of Sega Power as well and it took until I played this on the Mega Drive Mini 2 to realise it’s not actually the third in a series.

I think this was one of those reviews they’d do where it was obvious they played it for 5 minutes and had nothing to say about it except “Naff, naff, naff. This game is naff. The graphics? Crap. Crap, crap, crap. How do I fill out the word count.”

Yep! I found out about it from the wiki : )

http://wiki.selectbutton.net/sb:recommended:gameboy

Dragon Tail went by by the less poetic but more descriptive name “Nail 'n Scale” in North America. That’s sometimes written with a really silly extra apostrophe–“Nail ‘n’ Scale”–but the box logo clearly draws it as just 'n so I’m not sure where the second apostrophe came from.

Still convinced this is one of the best looking games around (sorry folks, I’ll burn out on RDR posting soon enough).

Those screenshots with the low sun on the horizon fail to capture how damn good it all looks in motion, the way it casts super long shadows from everything and all.

It’s held up remarkably well after all this time.

“n” is a clipping of “and” so it should have two apostrophes.

Two apostrophes

Wiz ‘n’ Liz

Bump ‘n’ Jump

Fun ‘n’ Games

Fun-N-Games (U) c!000

One apostrophe (back)

Rock n’ Roll Racing

The promo artist changed it:

And in a weird inversion of RNR Racing, Hot Chix ‘n’ Gearstix uses two apostrophes in-game:

Screen1-1024627472

but an older(?) logo in the promo art uses back-apostrophe, so at some point somebody made a conscious decision to switch:

One apostrophe (front)

Ghosts 'n Goblins

Ghosts 'N Goblins_000

Part of GNG’s appeal is its boldly garbled way of writing. It wouldn’t improve the logo to increase its orthodoxy.

Nebs 'n Debs

Some games seemingly take after GNG.

Pop’n Twinbee

Pop'n Twinbee (J) !000

This is like, Pop Music and Twinbee. Pop’n is always spelled as one word, like Ghosts’n or Ghouls’n. Most examples I see of the front-apostrophe 'N are Japanese games or inspired by them. Not this one though:

NBA Give 'n Go

NBA Give 'N Go (U) !000

The really screwed up one

Billy Bob's Huntin'-n-Fishin'

Billy Bob's Huntin' 'n' Fishin'

The playful hick dialect confuses people and you can find it spelled with two apostrophes, one apostrophe, hyphens, and zero apostrophes (also seen in Ed, Edd, n Eddy).

maxresdefault-2274927313

This goes to show that two apostrophes around the N is the most commonly used approach in game titles, but not necessarily the most famous.

Awesome collection. ^ _^

There’s a certain logic to ‘n’ giving an apostrophe to each truncated end!

(Personal preference-wise, to me the two-apostrophe form looks a bit clunky, and I think in practice is largely redundant, given that it’s fairly intuitive what 'n means. And in terms of how it’s actually spoken, 'n seems more…accurate to me somehow. But that’s all highly subjective and not as logical as an apostrophe on both ends…and nobody should listen to a dunderhead like me about it who couldn’t even work out the a’n’d thing. ; ))
