im up to the PS2 era in my dive into the From Software gameography which means im onto the short-lived 2nd generation of Armored Core my new favorite game series
i kinda knew i had a wrench wench hiding inside me but wow am i fucking hooked on comparing and reselling parts lol ive already spent more time with a pen & pad comparing stats than actually playing
It’s beautiful how little From even bothered to change from generation 1 Armored Core they just made another one of those but for PS2 this time, like they hadn’t lost a step. (The completely digital controls do feel weirder this gen, and it’s very funny how From did not factor in the DualShock 2 being the default controller at all until i think AC3: Nexus?)
ngl i kinda just made this post to share the opening CG cuz it is fucking sick
early/launch PS2 games fire intense nostalgia in me idk what it is exactly. Like, i do know, i got a PS2 as a Xmas present when i was 12 lol, but i never played this game until the other night and it stirred such intense feelings in me that uhh i cried a little bit lol IDK WHY EXACTLY ITS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FIDELITY OF 3D/AUDIO
Pac Man Championship Edition 2. How do you improve on Pac Man? Why does Pac Man need brakes? Well, he goes REALLY REALLY fast and you simply need to slow down to even percive where the little guy is going. Ghosts now can get ghost trains that get longer and longer as the game goes on and you get a million points when you get a power pellet and can eat the entire train up. Really good videogame. This reminds me of Fantavision or Tetris Effect where they took a classic game and made it look Really Really Nice. Sets my brain on fire in a good stimulating way.
decided that i would start getting into star ocean, just because blue sphere on the game boy color has some of the best graphics i’ve ever seen on that handheld. i’m playing the remake of the first game right now and my eyes rolled so hard they fell out of my skull upon seeing a reference to the something awful forums’ swear filter in the game.
whoever slipped that into the localization can “gently caress” themselves
hello gacha game haters
it is time once again to let myself be subsumed by phone gambling apps
ZZZ: I have no idea what’s going on here other than it’s finally the game’s 2nd anniversary, which means free stuff (“free”) and some new overpowered unit, she’s some lady with angel wings and a Void Hunter, the game’s “big important strong lore character” label, so go pull her. I pulled her and have absolutely no idea what she does but I know she’s good. the next big titty anime they have coming is a horse girl (no, not that kind of horse girl) (no, not a centauress) (no, not that kind of horse girl)
also I learned ZZZ shares a bunch of character names with Toshinden 4, which is a thing I don’t know how to feel about (I have doubts that both games using Bangboo, Miyabi and Eos/Eous is a coincidence, but also good, I am for nerds respecting Lord Tamsoft)
NTE: the combat remains good and the stuff meant to make me waste time in the video game remains bad. their main story/event thing this patch was 999 Nights wherein they made a completely self-contained action RPG mode using the combat mechanics of the main product with its own level scaling and gear and stuff and it’s like if Diablo was a musou and I’m just going to tell you what I told them in the survey I filled out that was likely printed directly into a paper shredder as I am a free-loading player from outside China: cancel your main game, take this mode, flesh it out, charge me 60 bucks for it
also they added a unit, Shinku, she’s kind of a dragon girl and her design is so uniquely and laser-focused trying to be horny as fuck that it comes off as embarrassing, and I’m saying this as an adult heterosexual cis male with a healthy amount of horny contained in my person, that I looked at her and went “c’mon. come on. have some shame.”
coincidentally they’re selling like, 4 skins for her and they all happen to cover her up more than her default look, yes, even her loungewear, which they call loungewear but it’s actually sleepwear
Endfield: it’s there, except there’s gas now. I love extracting gas and running it back to my factory and making the hot new item I need to make new gear for the newest units. yes this is me acknowledging the treadmill they have in place for the umpteenth time
they added the actual endgame mode, which is… the same endgame mode as all these combat phone games where you have a challenge and you get rated on it and you basically have a time limit for the best rating and it stands in stark contrast to the other challenge mode that’s been in the game since launch where it’s combat challenges but they throw curveballs instead of “have high DPS please”. for instance, one in the current batch has you unable to regen skill points naturally and the only way to get SP is to run and slip on banana peels (I mean, you do a full-on comedy pratfall) and you are doing this while being accosted by a very angry gorilla and it’s both hilarious and an interesting challenge as you’re balancing not being punched to death by a gorilla with needing the resource to kill said gorilla
occasionally video games are good
Snowbrick: it’s still this same patch. it was supposed to update 2 months ago. I’m just waiting for them to say when they’re turning off the lights.
that’s fine though, because
Gunshoot Impact: now I receive all of my required phone gambling app third person shooting gameplay from China’s number one government approved Roblox clone Genshin Impact
but I’m getting ahead of myself
okay I’m just gonna post out and open spoilers for all the story nonsense because none of you give a fuck, I’m the only one sick enough in the head to still be actively playing and engaging
last patch we went to the moon, the real moon, the moon that’s not dead and we see that, if I followed the story I didn’t pay attention to correctly, the dragon sovereigns had a moonbase and did moon research up there and the last few that were there turned themselves into not quite but kinda sorta moon gods to keep things in check and also as a super experiment (someone some day is going to see this post and then be mad that I am wrong about the lore). anyway, the important thing about the moon quest is you spend a bunch of time helping a moon spirit send a NASA-esque broadcast out into deep space and as you walk away, it turns out that hey, the Traveler and their sibling answer it
so, to summarize, you help Columbina and this moon spirit send a moon message into space, which is received and answered by you, which is what caused you and your (brother/sister) to come to Teyvat in your spaceship, which you have a spaceship, in the past, XXXX years ago, where your sibling woke up 500 years ago (I am most certainly getting some of the numbers wrong)
also your Fatui frienemy Sandrone/Marionette (who, despite being a robot, is named Marionette because she was based on a person named Mary Ann, which ironically is much like how “marionette” is derived from Mary), who died while helping you kill Dottore (Moon), got resurrected off-screen, so she’s better now. also her skirt got shorter and she’s showing some thigh as a part of this. this ties into the summer event they do every year, where this year they made it where you run an aquarium that’s on a boat and this manifests as a god awful single-player extraction game and bad Tapper and bad fishing, but you do it because, well, you gotta gamble.
well, we’re finally done with Nod Krai, we can finally go to Snezhnaya and I was really excited because they teased that Paimon, who usually speaks for the Traveler 99% of time, gets sick and is sidelined and let me just tell you this dumb angel-demon just gets a fucking cold from walking into Russia and also maybe because they’re doing superscience stuff
anyway, not-Russia. they don’t feel like wasting time and getting you into the meat of the plot of the nation the game has been building towards for 6 years so, very quickly, you:
this all happens in a very rushed manner in act 1 of the main quest, mostly because all the meat is in act 2. you learn the main thrust of of Russia’s problems is that, in order to complete the Tsarista’s plan to attack and dethrone God, she needs all of the anime coal, so the entire nation is in an energy crisis and the people are suffering. the rebel group obviously opposes this, so your new hunter friend Alyosha helps you get an in with the rebels, who he’s with, and with the capital city’s prima donna Vodyanitsa (if you know what this means: yes, she is), who’s also with the rebels, to gather info and pressure a factory owner to oppose the project. but you learn in the parliamentary session you attend that he’s already flipped as he was threatened by Lelek and when you talk about this with your old Fatui buddies, you start suspecting your new friend and Fatui underling Odette (yes, she’s a ballerina, yes, she has a shadow summon named Odile, no, she dances in heels, no I don’t want to litigate this design decision because it threatens to derail the entire post) of being Lelek
okay so act 2 is you going to confront Odette at a dress rehearsal about being Lelek but suddenly a violent snowstorm breaks out and you and a bunch of other people are stuck and have to spend the night and when you wake up the next day, two of the people there are dead and the game is now a murder mystery for the next 3 hours.
let me save 2-4 hours
hey it turns out you and the other 8-9 odd people there, including 4 characters they are either actively or eventually going to sell to you via gambling, fucking died and the theater is now just purgatory while your souls get claimed by the ley line directly underneath it but it has a two soul a day limit and your suffering is because the Ruler of Death, Ronova, is bored and wanted some entertainment. which, you know, I respect. anyway, two of you were actually already dead prior and are lingering spirits, which is why there’s a two soul a day limit, but the ley lines don’t know who so it’s just snatching whomever.
anyway at the end of this, you wake back up and lmao none of you died died. it’s eventually revealed that the Tsarista and the Fatui have gotten humanity too technologically close to being able to attack and dethrone God so every time the researchers get close to the breakthrough that will make this possible, she just kills everyone around smart science guy Mitya for a few minutes and then gives them some memory loss
yes the grim reaper of the world is doing a mini-Tower of Babel every time humanity builds the tower too high
okay I appreciate that the Ruler of Death is a catty, petty bitch (by the way, Ronova is a hot anime lady with big naturals and I would describe as the most popular dark-skinned character in the game due to her grey skin and) but this whole quest could have been an email and not multiple hours of a lower rent And Then There Were None and, having gone through the two trials back in Fontaine, none of this meant anything because the game would just drop a contrivance to move the plot along
so anyway you’re now primed to kill Death
I remain steadfast in my belief that the main story of this cell phone application is Not Good and, having gone through the main world quest of the patch, that the good writers get to do those
but I’m not here for the story, I’m here for the game. in case you forgot, I mentioned the Traveler got a gun.
they gave the Traveler a gun
there are just sections of the map where you have to Fortnite. suddenly the game is a third person shooter and you can slide and oh man, the shooting feels bad. they really goofed up the feedback of shooting. the whole thing feels limp and the main, overworld areas are basic running around and killing everything gameplay and the idea that they have areas in game where force you into the hottest CODBLOPS gameplay to do exploration and quests is going to backfire on them quickly because clearly this isn’t what everyone signed up for. hell, it’s incredibly jarring that the Traveler can’t climb walls or glide in the air because they’re too busy dudebroing it through areas
the shooter “endgame”, however, is pretty cool, where it’s Mercenaries/The Club where they have courses and you gotta go through them as fast as possible chaining kills and carrying over the game’s elemental reaction system to the shooter gameplay makes it satisfying to run through and optimize. also I give props that one of the quest areas you have to gunmode through is pretty much The Zone, where it’s a lush forest in the middle of a snowy country and full of treants and the dryad faes turn into a blue algae hivemind
as for the new bullshit they added: they added stellar reactions to get you to gamble more. they took old damage types and buffed them and so long as you have a character that can enable them, you get fancy damage numbers and they buffed some old characters too. Qiqi, the eternal booby prize for gambling, is literally one of the best stellar damage supports. Yumemizuki Mizuki (yes I swear to god that is her actual name) went from nothing standard unit to one of the best on-field carries in the game and her gameplay is literally just floating around and farting. the Traveler, the main fucking character of the video game Genshin Impact, is, for the first time in 6 years, actually an unconditionally good unit to play and all they had to do was a campaign of targeted buffs and give them a busted sword, almost as if every other game in the space making their protags also good units finally shamed the Genshin team into talking with the business psychologist on staff and going “well, I guess they can have something”
I can’t wait for next month to see how they bungle the game’s actual sixth anniversary (I hear the Google Classroom reviews are still recovering from 2021)
very much enjoying neo atlas 1469
Hell yeah
Thanks for your continued phone game posting PGP.
not sure what to do with Myst 4, not sure what I’m doing on Message From Deep Space. Maybe I’ll futz around elsewhere. Seems I was reminded of Magicube. Lets see what’s going on there. I’ve been feeling kind of foggy though, and I can’t tell if that’s just from bad sleep or if something else is going on. But I should really try to get some good sleep I suppose.
At least I got another puzzle done in Artisan of Glimmith. Only 3 left!
Magicube update: I don’t know why that one puzzle is so hard when the next three are (relatively) easy. I have to go back and figure out what I’m missing but I could have just skipped and made progress. Ah well!
what’s pgp
Phone game posting
OHHH i thought it was a nickname
Premium goon-game partaker
hit me i haven’t played a souls game since finishing elden ring and tapping out to souls fatigue… but that was four years ago…
now i’m trying to decide on a build i haven’t already rinsed in demon’s
idiot play enotria.
I am playing Screamer too. Seems like it’s a good time for Arcade racing games. Although expecting the same thing as Tokyo Xtreme Racer and I will hit a skill wall.
Cool game though althugh it seems like there’ll be too much mechanic stuff for my decript hands.
Both these games were a good change up from my first Forza game (Mexico). Even with muting the djs, using spotify for all of it and it having my actual car in it it was still aesthetically atrocious
Also went back to Nioh 3. I loved 2 and enjoyed Rise of the Ronin but combining the 2 of them just doesn’t work. Feels like I’ve got to do 2 hours of open map pish to get to some actual Nioh.
Probably doesn’t help that I have no idea what is going on with my so called build but don’t feel that should actually matter.
Welcome to the anonymous Screamers (who shout at the game because of the finnicky drifting mechanics which seem to be a bit hardcore even for experienced gamerz).
Esoteric Ebb
game has started to annoy me a bit. the humor is still working for me, but the main character is oddly devoid of personality compared to Disco Elysium. all the personality seems to be reserved for Chimes
me and @digs were describing the political and gender stuff in it as “the most annoying guy in your DSA chapter tries to explain unions and women to you”
that halfling scholar dude was really just unbearable. not just that he was long-winded but that you could see, in his reflected image, the sorts of archetypes that the developer thought it was important to represent and ‘discuss’. say what you will about Disco Elysium’s representation of guys like Measurehead, Gary the Cryptofascist, Titus Hardie, Trant Heidelstam, Steban the Student Communist etc; it was clear these were real working-class types (or else types whose influence and interactions with the working class structured that class’s political ambitions) whose politics mattered in some way to the Mazovian cause in the game, and the game was substantially about this broken world that had to be repaired including the ‘false consciousness’ types. Schnurre Appledent in Esoteric Ebb seems to be attempting to discuss the same kind of bigotries filtered through ‘progressive’ academia and class privilege, and it’s like… yeah there’s a reason I didn’t go to that kind of grad school, and furthermore, I doubt the workers’ cause really depends in any way on winning this guy in particular. in fact the philosophy is at least partly about this dude’s irrelevance to questions of political power and changing the world. and insofar as the player chooses to indulge this rambling – i didn’t see any option to particularly tell him to shut up – it’s about giving outsize importance to academic bloviation.
like, the entire discourse tree about Alignment – does alignment matter or not? is it reflective of something ‘real’, or simply false academic discourse, like phrenology? the game world seems to land very strongly on column A, due to its DnD heritage, while also trying to have it both ways. the rationalizations of this really failed to land for me.
it’s a shame, i can see a path where this character is instead a discourse on refugee/diaspora academics and their dual position as national bourgeois/class privilege on the one hand, and unwilling revolutionaries on the other – Edward Said, Mahmoud Mamdani, all those – but uh we did not do that here. I don’t want to be overly scathing, here; it’s not terribly written; but again Disco Elysium’s character portrayals, like so much about that game, were just difficult for any other game to match in scope and nuance.
so, yeah; will have to append to my assessment of this game’s politics (“loving parody of DE”) that it is a bit dilettantish and unserious whenever it tries to show its true feelings. it’s a shame! we were all rooting for you.
Roller credits on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which naturally means I’ve probably got another 30 hours of stuff to do, plus the expansion that’s supposed to be about 10-20.
The game just…ends? After you kill/confront the last of your big mysterious targets from the beginning of the game, the final guy gives you two hints, one per character, at finding the truth.
For Yasuke, this is pretty good. It’s a few missions of going after some Portuguese slavers, with a nice final battle where he seems to contextually beat the shit out of the guy in a way the game never lets you in any other encounter.
Swapped to Naoe, who is told to investigate an area an assassin was seen disappearing near. What follows is a lot of talking, a boss fight if you want it (god am I glad I did it because) and a direct cut to credits after a little more talking.
Gonna trust the DLC does its best to tie up the loose ends and revelations made at the end because it’s just such a weak wheeze of an ending. 120 hours for not much.
I’ve still got a whole region to the south to skulk around and a bunch of side quests…I’m gonna finish this thing (as much as I feel like anyway) and then free up 160 gigs.
To be clear, I didn’t hate it or anything! Just some real “wait that’s it” feelings at the end there.
