SB 1500 Jitsuyou Series Vol. 15 - Games You Played Today ~Catalogue of Games of the Thread~

I’ve been on the “thought Limbo was mid so I didn’t bother playing Inside” train. Huh, maybe I’m missing out.

Limbo was dull but Inside rocks. Glad they got to make a second one and it was great in the premise: a child is killed over and over as you solve puzzles.

If part of thinking LIMBO was mid was that you thought that you’d like something that was the same idea but much better, then you should definitely play INSIDE. I do kind of want to replay LIMBO, as at the time I really enjoyed it, but the memories I have of it definitely do not have any kind of really coherent narrative or flow. Just different ideas in different sections (along with a few basically unavoidable trolls)

I finished Haven on Myst 4 - I thought I wasn’t going to be happy with it but honestly the conclusion of that section was really satisfying. Also at the end of the main final puzzle it did this weird little section that I couldn’t understand why it did it at all (or why it had two necessary but redundant clues to solving it shoved in your face immediately), but then I think that might actually be a callback to the original Myst? In which case it’s kind of clever, but still a bit odd. Nonetheless. I really liked that area. I really liked exploring both of those areas actually, though Haven was the nicer one to look at by far. Better music too. I feel like the music has always been pretty solid in this series.

I’ve headed into Serenea which might be the prettiest environment in a Myst I’ve seen yet, though I haven’t played the remastered Riven which is going to surely have extremely updated graphics. Nonetheless. I’m excited to see what happens in this third section, and honestly even more so excited about the story of it all? Like I feel like that hasn’t been an important part of the myst experience, but despite the kind of flimsy acting of pretty much everyone but Atrus, I’m pretty invested in what happens to these people.

I, too, preferred Inside over Limbo, although I had thought that was mostly because I’d played the former with my brother, passing the controller around and commenting on the sights, and finished it in a day or two. It’s a fun way to play!

I guess my opinion would be more accurate as “best cinematic platformer since another world”

The placard on my train reads that Inside and SOMA are the two best horror video games since the numbered Silent Hills.

Also worth noting again that all of the sounds in Inside were transmitted through a real human skull.

i associate cinematic platformer with games in the prince of persia vein. limbo was definitely not that. is inside more like that?

the answer… is no. it’s more in the another world vein than the PoP/Flashback vein

i consider Another World itself to be in the PoP vein.

i just don’t see why “platformer with an art style” has anything to do with that style of game. but this is just semantics really

the difference for me is that PoP is built purely around the movement and puzzling whereas another world is more a collection of set pieces that convey a narrative and less emphasis on precision

Damn Super Mario 2 (GBA if important) is real hard. I’ve been in danger of running out of x99 lives twice.

the original tomb raider is basically just prince of persia, along a z-axis

Bananza is sort of divided into three main chunks in my head:

The levels where you just kind of respond to basic threats and challenges but mostly just smash

The levels that are playful challenges where you get to engage with it’s materials system in clever ways without a lot of pressure

And the sudden bursts of difficulty, usually in boss fights, where you have to showcase a level of mastery over the systems that you pretty much never needed to engage with before at the level it wants you to

It all cases it does want you to be breaking everything to get a solid pile of cold to buy shit.

The pacing is uneven to say the least. The chill levels have been a highlight because they often feel like they’re exploring their possibility space the most instead of rushing just forward and smashing.

The little side challenge courses are also usually pretty interesting and fit somewhere between boss fight and mechanical exploration level, but they can vary soooo much.

Not regretting getting it or anything but I can’t tell if the game is noncommittal or it will reward greater mastery if I go back to older levels for more bananas? Just an odd game

For me cinematic platformers have very specific movement/animations where each individual step can be significant. Both Prince of Persia and Out of the World have this, Inside and Limbo do not.

Of course the Oddworld games do seem to have that and I’m not sure I’d consider them cinematic platformers :\

I’m into the last quarter of The Message From Deep Space and I generally try to play through a single in-game week per session, assuming I don’t get horribly stuck on something (which was more of an early game concern, it is barely even a puzzle game any more). This has come to bite me in the behind as I am into the early 800s and in the midst of the longest in-game week ever, I’m not sure what the longest previous week was but this is already about double the length of a typical week and I’m not sure I’m even close to finishing it up.

I think Limbo is pretty good, better than “mid” anyway, but it was clearly the warmup for Inside. I think they both do some things successfully. Limbo still has some of that XBLA or late-era Flash-game energy to it and this endears it to me a bit.

Oriental Legend Spooky

My refund request to Steam was “Seems to run at only 30 fps, can’t turn off the blurry graphics filters, the sound is very muted, and the games themselves are mostly rip-offs of much better Capcom games that are themselves on Steam.”
