my bugbear here is that, if alphys and undyne are supposed to be a good example of queer representation, why does no one mention that there’s more naturalistic dialog between queer characters in the average bioware game? the only conclusion I can get to is that undertale is very strongly associated with a particular queer aesthetic, and it’s very pleasant and successful in that, but the main thesis of every “are we really putting undertale on the same level as mother?” argument is “stop confusing politics with aesthetics” and I think this is a pretty good example of that.
I think I’ve said it before, but I recognize people in my social circles in Alphys and Undyne and their interactions, so the takes that they’re not “naturalistic” – in a heavily-stylized game! – absolutely baffle me.
Just because something is rooted in the attitudes and experiences of social scenes and generations disconnected from your own, and it doesn’t have the same emotional connection for you, doesn’t make it “wrong.”
sure, I guess my main issue is that there’s not much there in undertale’s case – I think nongendered protagonists are the bee’s knees and I agree, it’s just a good lowkey thing to do, but to elevate “a highly performative tumblr dialogue between two anthropomorphic female characters” beyond everything that’s going on in mother 2/3 is a really boring read.
it seems like the original use of “better politics” that I responded to was actually more about “less utter-red-flag mickey rooney-in-breakfast at tiffany’s shit” rather than an overall more interesting and more complex politics. which is probably more of a misunderstanding (and/or insufficient sensitivity to what “politics” immediately means for some people) than anything else. is that fair?
you started this conversation by < text screaming > at someone for daring to suggest an indie game with an avowed queer fanbase had better politics than a game where it’s heavily implied a kid gets molested by a transvestite
Amidst a conversation about how the hot new JRPG Persona 5™ handles abuse and homosexuality in an utterly tired, offensive way
Yeah seems fair to say there was some misunderstanding going on!
mostly stuff that you get from mementos and the dark web, it tends to have surprisingly low stats, “black” name and description alluding to transmutations
Was I the only one who didn’t look up a guide and had kind of fun doing this in P4 with the Margaret S-link? Unless they’ve changed it the systems surrounding fusion are relatively simple as long as you have that chart they include in the manual around the details how the arcanas interact.
