It seems like a need to raise the stakes! that conflicts with the core values of creeping dread. A lot of horror fiction and especially movies share the same problem but I think their action game influences and the problems of maintaining threat against player mastery make it even worse.
That âgotta labâ element. Affects most of them and youâre right 3 late game gives you a creepy park with literal rise from your gwave zombs, then the Factory/Waste Treatment Facility which ties into handling runoff and bs from places like the NEST.
Through the hospital 3make seemed fairly intelligible if not overly condensed, then veers from a quality half phoning in to full on bla bla bla hereâs NEST 2, and all the oversimplification just dialtooooones til staff roll. There was a file or two about it being the Counter BOW dev lab but that just underlines everything else that was squeezed (Nikolai and other agents, UBCS workings).
I think a really subversive move would be to finally turn Jill into the eco-terrorist she always wanted to be, and have an RE game realize that YES, it is capitalismâs fault (âit wasnât because of a virus or monsters⌠it was greedâ) and the problem is not buried underground in a chrome plated petri dish but is unlocalizable, itâs out there - and capcom pushes the conflict up back onto the surface where the chaos of Raccoon City as we see on the streets in RE3 is shown to be the symptom of something more abstract, and the heroes, for once, canât finish the game with a heroic seeming look-away-from-the-explosion and learn that they have to look into the explosion and become the ones exploding things.
this is the dark gritty reboot I think the series could use. Claire kind of became this with Code Veronica and Rev2 but Jill is set up to do it now too with how the remake ended.
The Epilogue files in Nemesis were such a good idea, they knew these characters garnered certain investment/affection from players so getting a glimpse of where they were at or headed was great incentive for replays.

Cool how they (mostly) held to the trajectory Capcom eventually got around to.
I mean before Veronica goes to hell the opener is Claire in some Umbrella facililty killing PMC soldiers.
Yeah, she was like the only one with the guts to do it though and we never really saw it either
but you are totally right.
Claire Redfield running around blowing up umbrella facilities and being completely fucking fed up with being a resident evil protagonist is one of the many reasons why sheâs perfect. I love her and Capcom has just done her so dirty since og RE2 that it breaks my heart. Chris being the prominent Redfield in these games is such a fucking sadness.
The beginning of Code Veronica is so badass, even if it doesnât quite live up to its premise. âEscape from this prison island if you canâ challenge accepted, bitch.
my impression of Code Veronica when I first played it was âwow, this is so fucking sickâŚclaire is so coolâ and then Steve fucking Burnside showed up
please just tell me what happens to carlos and billy
I feel like Claireâs campaign in Revelations 2 being almost the same setting as Code Veronica except you hang out Barry Burtonâs daughter instead is Capcom atoning for Steve Burnside.
doesnât steve burnside die horribly?
but it was only
a fantasy
Iâm not gonna pull his look up for detailed comparison but they definitely had this composite of 90âs prettyboys going on (Dicaprio, Sawa).
Whiny whiny Steve came today pissy face so killed him. Tasty.
