Probably my favorite (possibly apocryphal) anecdote about Star Wars is that Lucas originally meant to call the movie Star War, until someone pointed out what the title spelled when read backwards.
I don’t really like Star Wars. Of the seven movies, I’ve seen… I think four-and-a-half of them, usually once each. I’ve seen the original a couple of times, the first one when I was maybe 19.
I saw the other two movies shortly after, then The Phantom Menace when it was new. A while later I saw… one of the other two prequels, in part. I think it might have been the third one?
My basic takeaway: the first movie bored me; I hated the structure to the second one, in particular the presumption of ending on a cliffhanger; and the third was okay. My favorite parts of the series are the Ewoks and Endor, generally. The best thing about The Phantom Menace is Jar-Jar. I don’t really care what happens in the prequels.
All of this is to wonder: is there a significant correlation between the age of one’s exposure to Star Wars and one’s fondness for it? Similarly, is there an inverse correlation between one’s nurtured affection for Star Wars, from a young age, and one’s appreciation of the “cute stuff” like Ewoks and Jar-Jar?
I’ll start the straw poll.
Year of first Star Wars viewing:
1997?
Age of first viewing:
19?
Would you consider Star Wars a major part of your childhood?
No.
How enthusiastic about Star Wars are you, on a scale of 1-10?
2. Maybe 3, if there are Ewoks.
What do you think of Ewoks (negative, neutral, positive)?
Positive
What do you think of Jar-Jar? (negative, neutral, positive)?
