Shocked no one mentioned The Club. That’s probably one of my top ten games period.

i didnt mention the club because i feel like im never shutting the fuck up about the club the greatest race gun game ever
I really like quantum theory, chest high wall platforming is hilarious
i want to like quantum theory more than i do, cos like look at it come on, but last time i played it the gun feel and lack of aim assist really bummed me out. stupid goth graphics be darned.
kernel level anti-cheat software has complete control over whatever machine it’s running on. complete control. i just don’t want that kind of invasive shit on my computer. it gives me the willies. also it’s not something i can do on Linux anyway.
i have access to a communal windows computer now, which has nothing sensitive on it and can be wiped at any time, so I’m happy to install risky software on that, but the whole thing just kinda soured me on the game, even though i know it’s not the only one doing it.
as for Veronica’s point about the fashiness of it, idk it just seems like pastiche of pastiche that’s increasingly hitting too close to home. I’m disinclined to assume they’re all fash sympathisers even though i think the “satirical” American imperialism schtick is in extremely poor taste.
it looks really fun. but circumstances have conspired to prevent me from playing it.
I’m generally not into shooters that don’t have like nails and bouncy balls and lasers but the racing format for it is just so good.
Plus the secret character is the Gordon’s fisherman.
Plum simply awesome.
ones I didn’t see on the list
Gungrave(s) - still need to play the second one
Kane & Lynch(s) - still need to play the first one
Gunvalkyrie - still think about the original Dreamcast plan for a controller-light gun hybrid control scheme, now that woulda been some funky thirpsing
Stranglehold - still haven’t beat this, the laser maze late in the game always makes me quit
Jet Force Gemini - sours as a collect-a-thon in the back half but some satisfying “Galaga in thirp-space” enemy shooting gallery formations in giant environs
Brute Force - remember this being mid way back when but now that I have my XBox hooked up, might snag a copy for cheap and have a second look
Crackdown(s) - does all the driving + jumping detract from its thirpsiness? nothing like leaping over a skyscraper and ragdolling guys with grenades from above tho
(shout out to the on-foot missions in Star Fox: Assault since I booted that up recently. game blows)
I never played the first one but I like the carry your own cover with you aspect of 2. I assume 1 did that too.
Really interested in Gunmetal Gothic, it seems very up my alley. Almost looks like a lost PSP game to me and I like the vibes.
i assumed i’d made a post abt overdose in the trash action thread but i just checked and nope? my memory is that the second one is weirdly worse than the first. like none of the encounters feel like they’re made for the tools you’re given. it also doesn’t help that it runs like total shit all the time.
shame cos gungrave 1 rules.
this was also brought up in the trash action thread but i didn’t know about the original control scheme; sounds like a wii game!
fsr i beat this game like 3 times as a kid. i have no strong feelings on it but i remember it was the first game i played that allowed for both tank controls and modern twin-stick controls. i remember trying to convince my little brother to play with the modern controls but he hated them so much that he cried and cried until i changed them back lmao.
play it on easy!
i beat winback 2. what a stupid game. i kinda wish i hadn’t beaten it. the final mission ends with a cod-style one last shot that gives you one of two endings depending on whether you manage to hit the bad guy or shoot the girl (thus repeating the main character’s inciting trauma) which is almost good, but it still feels pretty shit to have a sudden, time-sensitive action dictate whether you get the good or bad ending.
it’s definitely the inferior of the two cavia ps2 thirpses. 60fps be darned. it’s too long and the levels are too samey and encounters are often in direct conflict with the game’s verbs.
like so many before it, it goes on the “play for one sitting then walk away with kindness in your heart” pile.
latest thirpst trap: Arc Raiders
after dying a few times I am seeing the appeal. almost Souls-like PVP stuff
can’t believe i didn’t think of this
