QUAKE

apparently there has been some “AI” bs happening in the trenchbroom repo so uh this exists now.

seems cool. the conversation happening in the discord is really great! lots of people expressing sentiments which are extremely close to my heart (much talk about the need for a generic trenchbroom equivalent for modern indie dev).

Going to give this a try. I’ve been relying on my Quake map project to offload pent up expectant energy from working on longer- slower-form projects. Few things beat doodling in BSPs!

oh to be clear that fork isn’t a ‘thing’ yet exactly. it’s buildable but there aren’t any release candidates, and it’s just based on the 2025 version of TB (which, as far as we can tell, is the latest one w/o LLM shit in it), so i’d just go w that version until they’re properly up and running.

Quake™: Dawn of the Machine is available now!

To celebrate Quake’s 30th anniversary, the award-winning team at MachineGames—in collaboration with id Software—returns with Dawn of the Machine, a brutal new episode building on their critically acclaimed work on Dimension of the Machine and Dimension of the Past. Delivering ferocious combat, labyrinthine level design, and nightmarish realms that twist reality beyond recognition, it pushes the legacy of the genre-defining first-person shooter even further, honoring one of gaming’s most enduring icons.

END THE NIGHTMARE. ESCAPE THE ILLUSION

Ranger is trapped in a dimension of endless illusion, reliving the same violent cycles for what feels like lifetimes, dying thousands of times in a futile attempt to escape. Wearied but unbroken, he has heard rumor of The Nightmare Machine.

Beyond the hordes of monsters, twisted by an eternity in the Elder realms, lies the Machine. It is believed its destruction will shatter the illusion, finally breaking the loop.

I’m in the first actual level now and ho-lee shit this is doing some new stuff I never expected. I’m going to spoiler tag everything because if you haven’t played this yet you should as soon as possible and don’t read or watch anything else about it before you do.

First, you can extend your max health by 10 points at a time with a new pickup. That’s something I haven’t seen before but I admit it may have already been done by others since I haven’t kept up with the Quake scene much.

Second, as you move through the level it automatically switches between a futuristic sci-fi base theme and a medieval castle theme. Same level layout as far as pathing and architecture but textures, enemies and item pick up locations all swap on a dime as you move through it. When you reach a transition area you can jog back and forth between it swapping the whole thing at will. It’s a really cool effect.

Absolutely massive. I love it.

Looking forward to seeing what else is in store and hoping they do another one of these for Quake II’s 30th in a couple years.

This isn’t available for the GOG version of Quake. :frowning:

edit: Yet. Turns out, it was announced at Quakecon that GOG and Epic versions are being worked on and should come out later.

Yeah it’s only available for the Nightdive remaster, unfortunately. At least right now.

I finished the first level. That neat trick I mentioned only happened in the one spot so I guess it was more world building than part of the actual level design but who knows, maybe that will become a thing in later levels. They definitely are very good at using level design to convey a narrative, as evidenced by past episodes they’ve done.

This has some really nice new texture work that goes really well with the original look.

i can slide u some pak files if u want em

Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll just wait for the GOG release. It should be packaged nicely and not have the potential compatibility woes of trying it in random Quake engines. I would have taken you up on it if there wasn’t going to be a GOG release like I initially thought was the case.

Felt like an ambitious game that the devs and engineers didn’t have QUITE enough time to fill out some ideas that the writers came up with. It’s not my favorite, but I feel like the remake was a classy re-sharpening of it.

Also, hello everyone. I’m not dead, I miss you, I hope you have been well, life has been intense.
