tonight i went to an underground show at my job’s spooky condemned storage building
there were four performers, all students
the last was a woman in a long black dress with a silver necklace and hair in long brown curls, headbanging violently to harsh ambient noise she was controlling on a glowing polychromatic sequencer, silhouetted against grainy black-and-white footage of running howling wolves that transitioned into u.s. drone strikes
twenty minutes in there was only static and pulsating noise and she pulled out a microphone and started singing, at first a barely audible rhythmic chant, and building and developing over several minutes until she was belting so loud she had to hold the microphone below her chest, her voice was powerful and perfect and full of emotion, she kept getting angrier until the last note became a furious scream that somehow stayed on key and her whole body caved inward with it as if she had been punched in the chest
she went for half an hour with no breaks and only when it was over could i hear how hard i was breathing from adrenaline
it was,
well, it was #haleypunk among other things
i hung around awkwardly afterwards until i saw an opening to walk up to her, i said “that was really beautiful,” she thanked me, she asked for my name, i said “haley,” she looked me in the eye and said “it’s nice to meet you, haley,” she smiled and cocked her head and gave me a flirty look and my heart jumped in my chest and she looked like she was going to say something else before i stammered “have a good night” and 180ed out of the room and walked home with my chest thumping the whole way
and a cute barista called me “gorgeous” just a few hours before so uhh basically im really gay and, apparently hot,
