I was real addicted to the riichi mahjong room in Yakuza for a bit, but I still don’t know exactly what hands you’re supposed to get when you take other tiles! I play the filipino mahjong with my in-laws which is a lot easier for me bc it’s more or less like gin rummy and you don’t use the flores (dragon, wind, directions, etc). Plus, one tile is usually a wild card. They still take all my quarters, tho.
Very fun thread, minty. the pc engine is so nice lookin
This is the first console game released by Masaya, so it’s a Big Moment for Video Games. It’s a lightweight strategy game that removes a lot of the numbers from hardcore military sims. I think they took away too many numbers because now it’s difficult to know what’s going to happen when I attack an enemy. The only visible stats I can see are Attack and Defense, but there are two stats that’re even more important: hit rate and health. I had to translate a Japanese webpage to learn this, but apparently the best hit rate I can hope for is 40%. That is, 4 out of 10 attacks will hit. At it’s worst, such as when using a land unit to attack a flying unit that’s on a mountain tile, it could be 10%. There’s no in-game information for this. On top of that, I can’t even tell when my units miss because I can’t see the change in health. I was able to clear three battles, but it’s too slow and inscrutable for me!
The first Steet Fighter is interesting to me. Clearly, the idea is sound. It’s basically a boss rush version of sidescroller punchers like The Kung Fu. Even putting aside what would come later for fighting games, that’s a good idea! The AI is also really clever and won’t repeat the same approach, so it’s hard to cheese the opponent. I like how I can choose which country I want to start in and there are multiple opponents from that country.
What makes it awful is how it feels to control. The difference between a weak punch and a strong punch is how long the button gets pressed. Jumping in feels terrible and it should feel great! I could usually get two opponents into a country, but then I would be up against an unstoppable juggernaut.
Wow, now every game released on the PC Engine in 1987 and 1988 has been mentioned in this thread. I don’t think that’s going to happen again, but it’s neat to see.
Oh! I forgot to mention something about No-Ri-Ko. After saying goodbye, she said my name. Noriko Ogawa sounded out ミント. Who says dreams can’t come true?
EDIT: I am so embarrassed I said Gaia no Monshou was made by Telenet Japan in the original post. Please don’t revoke my GameFan license. I promise I’ll never make a mistake like this again.
I looked at that one and seriously considered getting it to play (the demo for now) on PC in the Playdate SDK - Develop for Playdate - but after looking at it for a while it struck me that losing color is not super helpful when it comes to mahjong solitaire.
You can hand them out to whichever you deem worthy and I will show the counts in post No. 2.
Also!
I really want to try and setup multiplayer sessions in March. I think the best way of doing this would be through Parsec, but I’ve never tried it with people who are geographically distant! I made a discord server for it: PC Engine Multitappers. Honestly, I’m nervous about it, but the dream of 5-player Dungeon Explorer and pickup games of gateball is just too enticing.
Before the month end I checked the list again and first couldn’t find Japanese roms for Legendary Axe (huh) and saw Keith Courage and the Alpha Zones waited for me. First I played the Japanese version till I couldn’t take any more.
An article that would take me too long and too much of a good time on archive.org to find is a very early insert credit article by tim rogers. He described an older kid who informed him on the playground that Keith Courage was better than Mario 3. When young tim refuted the point, the boy punched him in the face and said
DON’T FUCK WITH KEITH COURAGE
This thought is never far from my mind when the PC Engine comes up. Keith Courage is harder than the Japanese version. As you do and do not take damage and the life bar does and does not go down, Stage 3 made me audibly go “Oh Come ON.”
Legendary Axe is definitely a should have been a pack in game. It’s a pretty decent demo of what the PCE can and will do and will convince you to buy more games. Keith Courage as a system demo is about as good as The Supe Spy was in the Neo Geo kiosks.
i had keith courage due to it being the pack in game and i don’t think i ever got past the first level. i mean i was very bad at video games so make of that what you will, but i did manage to beat both bonk’s adventure 1 and 2 and get pretty far in a number of other tg16 games
managed to beat three opponents in fighting street! it’s an improvement over the arcade version, in that it’s not completely unplayable. it still sucks though, and i didn’t successfully execute a single special
it finally occurred to me to look up why Street Fighter 1 was called Fighting Street on consoles and the only thing i could find was about how possibly Namco owns “Street Fighter,” which would explain one thing but not other things.
New month, new year!!! 1989 in some ways is the peak for the PC Engine. It’s the one year when it feels like the cutting edge, preferable to all other available consoles; moreover, it’s a wide and deep year for the library with great things across many genres.
I made a roulette wheel with every 1989 game for folks to use if they’re feeling adventurous. Wheel of Names
Even more opportunities to post high scores!
I want to host a Parsec night to play Dungeon Explorer soon. Join the discord if you are interested! Discord
I played some more mahjong in the form of Wai Wai Mahjong. Now that I know the basic rules, I focused more on strategy this time. I just tried to answer the question: “What should I discard?” I found this article with some quick advice. Mahjongg: Discard Advice. Friends, I actually won a round.
This game was easier to win a round because it was just one-on-one rather than 4-player. Fewer players means fewer chances for someone else to win. Also, this game had the additional gimmick of letting me buy items with earnings to make winning easier. I am getting closer to attaining mahjong enlightenment.
I tried volume 1-3 of Rom^2 Karaoke. Lady Rude sang some songs and Volume 3 has Train Train by The Blue Hearts. It was nice to see Karaoke style stuff again. Lots of nice memories from college bubbled up. Might try to do it as a family this weekend see if Neo Rude likes dancing around to midi sounds.
