Was literally getting a prompt from my mister saying the resolution changed.
you’re technically both right. the internal resolution of the console is changing but ultimately all of them are delivered as a 240p analog video signal so it would not trigger your capture card to switch
Ah, interesting. (RGB-modded Duo-R.) Yeah that would have been unrecordable on my set-up if it had actually been changing the output resolution.
NEC Retro says for PC Engine “Screen resolution: 256×224 to 512×242 (most commonly 256×239)” PC Engine - NEC Retro
götzendiener
This game does Own! I was far too tired last night playing it but have marked it as a future good time. Isometric Prince-of-Persia like doesn’t come around ever. Especially with Gainax on board. Gainax has a really interesting gameography. Like you and Loki said, wordless, solving puzzles, with a baffling control scheme.
If it wasn’t obvious this is a game for a specific kind of sicko.
Dragon Half
Also like you said hovers that line of horny/creepy with the barely-dressed chibis. It’s wild to see 2chan humor with a budget. One of your player characters is a Dragon-Half who wants to wish to become human so she can have sex! It seems like it might be directionless fun with a full team of humans. It is barely a game you play. Stuff just happens as far as my 30 minutes were concerned.
The pixel art is incredible and there is so much of it. I should expect this from the Quiz Avenue team.
2channers really think something with a very small face that doesn’t say anything is the pinnacle of humor.
they tried to solve the discrepancy between people who think up should be northwest and people who think it should be northeast with a scheme that i’m sure satisfies nobody when they could have simply made it a menu option
for those with no intention of playing this, you are at all times locked to one of the two isometric axis, so for example up OR right moves you northeast, while left or down moves you the opposite direction southwest. you change what axis you are locked to by hitting a diagonal. someone felt really clever coming up with this.
1994 wasn’t just for the 16bits, as the Saturn and Playstation launched. Let’s check out both real quick:
Playstation: King’s Field, Detana Twinbee, Gokujou Parodius, Ridge Racer
Saturn: Virtua Fighter, Clockwork Knight, Myst
Both consoles got the marble rolling game Tama. Saturn will get Twinbee and Parodius by summer of 95. And Saturn will have to recall and put out Virtua Fighter Remix to make up for the disaster that is the launch Virtua Fighter. The 32X version will also come out in 1995 and that one is a good deal better than Saturn Virtua Fighter.
I guess I need to order the Playstation 1, two-volume mooks soon. I’ll have more to say next month obviously, during the Last Real Year of the PC Engine.
The Jaguar, 3D0, and CDi aren’t real and you know it.
the 3do in japan seemed to pick up some of the weird super low budget indie spirit that manifested on the pc engine as stuff like cd battle and ultrabox
1995
We are going to start and end the year with raising young girls, with sprinkling around of even more raising girls. We’ll raise girls to fight in robots and duke it out in the world of high flying Josei Wrestling. The shooters return, finally, along with Mahjong. We even get the first? And only Shogi game for the system.
Here’s Rudie’s Recap of the stuff he isn’t even going to begin to touch.
Princess Maker 1 and 2: remember when I said those nice things about Gainax a post back? I regret that now. These perve-fests can suck eggs until they are a national sport.
Then again. My intellectual curiosity may get to the better of me and I’ll end up playing PM2 which by accounts is the same as 1 but better and more.
Super Real Mahjong PV Custom
Finally- mahjong, for adults;
Slot Gambler and Sexy Idol Mahjong Yakyuuken no Uta
I’ve mentioned before I have an affection for this early 90s scan pornographic game. Well here are two of them that some how count as legitimate releases but Hi-Leg Fantasy does not. Huh! Also SIMYKKNU features baseball mini games??
Jongkami Densetsu Quest of Jongmaster
Strip Mahjong from the Arcade and Neo Geo CD
Mahjong Sword Princess Quest Gaiden
While they say this is also an RPG I won’t be tricked into play this horny Mahjong game.
Only 36 releases in 1995. The last real year of the console and we’ll pick up the stragglers in October. I’ve got 8 RPG-style experiences. So that will not ruin my life like last month almost did. I’d be shocked if any of them were bad like Sea of Stars is bad.
I am impressed by this game’s title.
i only have one 1995 pc engine game, but it’s asuka 120% burning festival maxima, which is probably the best fighting game on the system. it’s unbelievable that such a good fighting game can be running on an 8-bit console!
it’s quite a bit uglier than other versions, but stil very very good
Don’t trust myself on that kanji reading it might as well translate “Jong” “God” as Jongmaster.
When I first learned about Ai Chou Aniki back when I was a high schooler, something awoke deep within me. I’m talking about those bold, thick…
…kanji on the title screen. The weird monospaced English font. Just seeing the year 1995 on a PC engine copyright. The flames. It felt so raw and bootleg-like. I was really into the idea of extending old hardware as long as possible (windows 98 user until sophomore year maybe?) and this felt like the ultimate version of that lifestyle. And I was just learning about doujin games too.
I’ve sort of come around on sapphire (which I will let somebody else post about) and I’m still waiting for all the big post-94 text heavy games to be translated, but it turns out Ai chou aniki is pretty bad. See the original chou aniki was made by actual NCS gynoug/gleylancer people, and kouji hayama actually composed. All of the sequels were outsourced to randos and I think hayama just got credit for reusing some of his songs. It’s all just like a cheap cash in that doesn’t understand the little things that made the original so appealing. Somebody missed how funny it was that the “bros” were like option ships floating around the player, they just went ahead and made the bro the player and made his sprite huge.
Anyway I haven’t posted much bc about a year before this thread started, I started and finished my own pc engine library deep dive. The timing was bad but anyway I’m glad to hear about all the untranslated games I didn’t get to play. I have one post 95 game I will post about next month!
As we are towards the end, what were 5 games that surprised you in your own deep dive?
The soundtracks to the PC engine bomberman games are incredible. I’d say the best music on the system. I had it in my head that they would have started out quaint in 1990 and peaked later. But a lot of arrangements from games like super bomberman 3 are fully intact in the pce versions.
Nectaris is so nice & smooth. I figured any strategy game from back then would be crusty and slow. Very slick stuff
A game that I’m surprised I’m reminiscing about right now is out live. (Unless there’s another similar game? It wasn’t silent debuggers.) Sometimes I’m in the mood for a very abstract first person dungeon.
The RPG mode being included in the localization of namco’s world court tennis
Wish I had good news for the start of 1995, I don’t. I watched the Godfather tonight, and let me tell you it still isn’t in my top 200 movies. But it was certainly better than what happened later, by which I mean my just now.
DRAGON KNIGHT AND GRAFITTI
I was all ready to copy and paste and fill out the prompts for this. I was gonna grab my sport coat and ask what’s the deal with PC Engine games going in reverse chronology? That doesn’t matter. See the Grafitti part of the title lets you see visual scenes (horny) of all the games in the series. You can organize by the size of body parts or to my shock and disgust age. If you got a Dragon Knight ISO on your computer, maybe you saw my praise of Dragon Knight 2? The girls across the series are extremely underage. It’s all pedophilia. Let’s delete these games and move on with our lives.
So that is not all bummer I went ahead and played (grabs book) Slot Gambler. And it is really involved Pachislot + Video Game + 3x3 sliding puzzles + very grainy pornography. I fucking love sliding puzzles. I figured out to solve them in 5th grade and it’s never left. It’s been almost 30 years of seeing a friend suddenly encounter one in a video game and me yelling MOVE OVER. It really gets me going, you know what given the content of the first half of this post let’s not Rudie.
It’s after midnight so discussing the crushing sadness of playing digital slots and feeding into the exact gambler tendences with no reward and yet all the same life ruining potential…
That sentence got away from me. All the real-human-photographs looked not happy to be having their photograph taken. I’ll open my FTP in the morning and delete dragon knight and it’s sequels forever. Update it’s the morning and I just deleted the smut and I still feel gross.
Yeah I remember being equally surprised at the age sorting in that menu, although given that it is Japan I guess I should not be so surprised. At least the PCE versions don’t have any actual sex or nudity.
(I think I can only post 3 posts per topic so I guess this is my last one? Maybe I shouldn’t have wasted it on such a short response…)
i played some private eye-dol, where you are both an idol and murder solver.
it’s structurally similar to the usual japanese adventure game where you keep hunting flags to progress the story, but after starting out looking like a regular (but high production value) visual novel…
we switch to a top-down 2d perspective and can move about freely, which makes the running back and forth to trigger flags easier than the usual menu slog.
the tilesets are pretty nice. i love the shading, and the diorama cutout of the building instead of depicting the outdoors as pitch black. you switch over to first person artwork in certain examination scenes and it generally looks really good.
unfortunately we get a repeat of the snatcher creep scene where we get to see an anime teen showering. at least unlike snatcher it’s censored, but still.
Maybe your filtering but it looks so much like a DS game!
