pceworks’ whole deal is selling high quality bootlegs that come with various extras and have small print runs so most of the time they’re only marginally cheaper than buying real copies. they’re probably best known for their rondo of blood set

as much as Turrican is beloved by certain european retrocomputing enthusiasts, the first actually good Turrican games were Super and Mega Turrican (shame we never got a proper Turbo Turrican)

i will defend OG C64 turrican, at least, it is very decent for the platform
music also slaps hard
but yeah it is more or less the kind of action game that is “impressive for C64” and unplayable for any other platform lol

an insurmountable problem with a lot of european microcomputer games is that despite it no longer being 1978, many developers insisted on their games being controlled with only one action button.
some scant few amiga games recognise two or more buttons, so there was really no excuse on that system, at least.

it Came From The Desert
Another I recommend just watching a playthrough but I do mean watching. This is from that era where CDRom games absolutely did not have to make sense. With almost no input, drift from one David Lynch-style beautifully overacted person talking to the camera to the next. Play some piss-poor minigames. Get yelled at for going into a store, just like the 90s! Remember when you would get yelled at for being a customer? The 90s! Had a great strange time with this. Best western game of 1991 until I notice a different one I say!

Dragon Saber
It hews closely to Dragon Spirit. As a blue dragon, I fly around spouting fire on the ground and spitting fire across the sky. I can get multiple heads, super-powered fire streams, and fly faster. Getting hit levels me down. It’s a headache. I played through a bit on easy and it wasn’t exciting at all, just annoying. They kept dangling these powerups in front of me and then immediately punished me for grabbing them. Please just let me be an all-destructive three-headed dragon! Thinking about it further, this is the third game this year where you can level up a dragon from something puny to a fire-breathing freak.
Zan: Kager ō no Toki
I was getting worried when I loaded this up because the opening cutscenes were all set in feudal era Japan and I was thinking, great another obtuse strategy game. Then the title screen came up and I saw “TAITO, Licensed from WOLF TEAM.” My spirits shot up into the stratosphere after seeing those words. Then I started the game and, well…

1992 is coming, and it is when PC Engine starts getting the real horny. I read the description of one of them in both mooks and frankly we can delete Pastel Lime from internet to the benefit of everyone.

There is also Super Real Mahjong Special Miki, Kasumi, Shoko no Omoideyori which is a port of one of the horny arcade mahjong series with all you want in tact.
Ikegami Mami is a sequel to Mitsubachi Gakuen starring one of the girls in that in an adventure game. All the pictures of it just have her posing so how much it is a game is probably debatable.
Yawara looks like a horny gag manga so will actually give it the time of day.
Dragon Night 2 is a dungeon crawler where defeating the monsters shows them to be animes in state of undress.
Mahjan Monogatari 2 Mahjong game you know why I’m mentioning it in this post. There are 2 of these for 1992.
Mamono Hunter Yuuko doesn’t this also have a megadrive version? There are two games in this series on the PC Engine with plenty of service in the pictures.
All of those extra words were so I wasn’t just mentioning Pastel Lime which the description has been haunting me for two weeks.

the mega drive game is completely different. it’s a platform game, while the pc engine game(s?) are, i think, digital comics, or some other boring thing
yawara is based on a fairly long-running anime about judo. of course, it’s another digital comic.

Out of all the government strategy games, this one looks the coolest. It’s made by Intec, and they made the genre their thing. They also only made games for the PC Engine. That’s called loyalty. Selecting menu commands brings up a little animation window showing the action: advisors whispering in ears, messengers riding on horseback, that sort of thing. I think if I knew Japanese, I would actually try to play this for more than ten minutes.
R-Type Complete CD
Somehow, this game is worse than the Hu-Card release. It introduces cutscenes and new music, and feels much cheaper in ways I can’t explain. I guess there’s no accounting for good taste.
Super Momotaro Dentetsu II
This game is so rad. I love it. In the last game, I was confused about how to play. This time, things make much more sense. I played a quick tutorial match. Momotaro explains the best way to learn is to play so he set me up with a two-year, one-on-one fight for railroad supremacy. Things were looking grim at first year as I landed on red square after red square, but as luck would have it, I picked up a card that made my opponent sleep for 3 months. I got to the destination first, racked up a pot of yen, and started buying up businesses left and right. Then a troll doll-looking freak called “Binbogami” started following me around and causing havoc. He would take my funds and buy failing businesses, change my shop’s names to uncool puns, and generally make a mess of things. I was seriously worried that Binbogami was going to put me in barrel overalls. Then, all of a sudden, he transformed into a different creature and this guy just paid me small sums of money. Needless to say, I won. That’s why this is the best game of 1991.
Andre Panza Kick Boxing
The animation in this game is so smooth. It’s really scary. It must have been rotoscoped, but the ref is so cartoonish that they had to have used other tricks. Controlling the game is pretty hard though. There’s something to do holding a button and pressing certain directions for different strikes, but I could never get it down well enough to win. That’s why this is the worst game of 1991.

cyber dodge - dodgeball in the future with monsters and stuff. unfortunately, all the teams have stats that make them more difficult as you progress through single player mode, making it impossible to have a fair match in versus mode.
kaizo chojin shubibinman 3: ikai no princess - one of those games i wish i could have played as a kid. just a perfect platform game approximation of early 90s kids action anime
mirai shonen conan - it’s an okay platform game. the anime has a full blu ray release in english now, i should get that sometime
minesweeper - yes, it’s a minesweeper game for a console. it has some moderately interesting variants on the concept, though
soldier blade - really fucking good shooting game. even saves your high scores if your hardware setup has that ability!
ranma 1/2 dato ganso musabetsu kakuto-ryu - even worse than the snes ranma fighting games
fire pro wrestling 3 - the third fire pro wrestling game
