It’s multiplatform, but is any version preferable to the PCE-CD? It just comes across as the definitive version.
Bari Bari Densetsu
This is a pretty simple racing game. I had hoped for more since it was made by Taito, but there are a couple of things that hold it back. My favorite part is the weather forecast before a race. It will show the probability of rain and I can change my tires accordingly. It’s like choosing weather to bring an umbrella. The weather changes over the course of the race, so the sky can look overcast at the start and darken into rain after two laps. Shifting gears feels tricky in a nice way. I have to press I and a direction at the same time. It’s really hard to do while turning.
Races are five laps long. At around 2 minutes per lap, that means racing for 10 minutes. It’s too long! It really makes falling off the bike miserable because it drags everything out even more. Aside from the tires, I can adjust other parts, but it’s mostly a mystery to me. What are peekee engines? What’s the difference between a hard and soft suspension? Do I even feel a difference when I change these parts? I just work on intuition.
fortunately(?) valis 2 is probably more winnable than it looks, cause i know i beat it a decade ago without codes. even though the only thing i still remember is the sunset gradient so was it really worth it?
valis 3 tho…
Bailed on Bari Bari Densetsu the first time I ran into a thing. The polygon Taito logo was neat.
Okay let me get these F1 names straight:
F1 Pilot: You’re The King of Kings (Pack In Video). Feels like a demoscene thing for the Atari Lynx. Doesn’t seem like a game. One Qualifying lap was enough.
F1 Triple Battle (Human): also feels like an atari lynx game squished to 1/3rd of the screen. It’s by Human! Very smooth scaling almost felt like an actual race track in a way these scaling games frequently do not. Like Minty said about Bari Bari, 2 minute tracks times 5 and that was just to qualify. It has 3 player split-screen play! That would be neat to see in action at next ButtCon.
F1 Dream (Licensed by Capcom): it starts with you doing drag racers and it can stay there. Much like Moto Roader the movements are position based which would have been great when I was a little kid but as an adult is just infuriating when I have to reposition my brain at every turn on how to turn left. Both this and Moto Roader can jump in a lake. This game gave me a crisis as imagined trying to review it for SNEX and just having a break down at staring at this damn game for an hour.
The RPG F1 game will have to wait till tomorrow.
Mr Heli Daibouken. Devious Evil. These Cute em’Ups have always held a dark secret that they are fucking tough as hell. Managed to get to the boss of stage 2 on 2 credits which is a giant ball that fills 60% and will ruin you if it touches you. I could maybe get into this if there was a cheat where you started with competent weapons. Should just give time to Fantasy Zone instead.
Nectaris/Military Madness: as featured on the EGM issue 100 Top 100 Games Of All Time. I actually like this a lot. It seems to eliminate experience? And building. So you just have to worry about how to win with the pieces you have. And the battle area was very small for the 3 fights I did. Had a really great time with it. Again Save States. Might play it on a chinese handheld if I pick up mine again.
Hanii In The Sky: fucking weird shooter where one button rotates your pea shooter around your ancient Japanese statue guy. You start too weak and again desperate for a stronger weapon. Very strange to rotate only one way.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME
There is RomRom Karaoke and the completely seperate Rom^2 Karaoke. What a god damn mess.
There is a fan translation that includes a hack to make select rotate the other way.
oh hey i recognize that map. that’s Suzuka International Racing Course! I feel like it’s been in tons of racing games.
oh wow, i should give this a try later. i didn’t think there were any rivals for final lap twin
There’s 5 F1 games for 1989.
lol Heavy Unit sucks so bad everyone should play it lol
oh, i meant “rivals” as in “in the same league of quality”
Kagami no Kuni no Legend
This is a sequel to No-Ri-Ko. It uses the same engine as Space Adventure Cobra. Let’s see, last time, I went on a date with Noriko after seeing her in concert. What’ll we get up to today?
The game starts with me watching TV in my living room. Noriko is performing one of her songs. Suddenly, something strange starts to happen. Noriko gets sucked into a dark wormhole. I’m sucked in too!
I wake up in a bright forest, completely lost. Eventually, I come upon a talking rock. He doesn’t like me at first, but I do things for him like remove is moss. He starts to answer my questions about where I am, but he doesn’t tell me how to get out of the forest. Then I decide I’m going to bury him. This threat works and he opens a path.
In the next area, I learn something. I can die. I go down one way, and a crab kills me. Go down another, and I fall off a cliff. The game over screen is incredible.
The right path leads to a friendly, musical frog. After listening to his music, I’m allowed entry to the town.
The town is completely devoid of humans or animals. It’s totally quiet. A few of the houses I go into have ornate mirrors. I inspect them carefully. Something is off. I try talking to one and it talks back. From this mirror, I learn that Dana, an evil demon, has turned all the villagers into mirrors and kidnapped Noriko. More importantly, I acquire a magical compact that can summon my love. Unfortunately, a demon appears and attacks me before I figure out how to use it.
The attack blows me away, deep into the forest. I hear a voice. It’s coming from my magical compact. It’s…Noriko.
In Neutopia you play a census taker that is going house to house finding out what the people think of the nearby dungeon.
I tried playing this and I can’t do it. Worse than Deep Blue.
Also…Double Dungeons
When I loaded up this Wizardry-like, I was kind of hopeful. 3D dungeons and I get to choose any scenario I want from the beginning. There’s even a 2-player, splitscreen mode, so you can delve with a friend. As I worked my way through the first scenario, I realized how boring this idea could be.
I’m going to say right now that the original Wizardry is still worth playing today. That’s because it has clever dungeon designs, a six-person party, and a robust list of spells. Double Dungeons doesn’t have any of that. It’s just me and my enemy, whacking each other forever. When I die, I get teleported to the entrance of the dungeon, lose my gold, but keep my xp. This is the equivalent of a clicker, a playable progress bar. I can’t stand it.
Knight Rider Special
This game kind of rules. Ever since Victory Run, I’ve been hoping for another great scaler. I’ve never even watched Knight Rider, but I’m drawn to this. Right away, I notice the tuning is a little odd compared to others. The turns aren’t that tough most of the time and bumping vehicles is more likely to make them explode than do anything to me. Actually, it’s a bit like a scaling Spy Hunter. I start off with machine guns, but I earn other gadgets each round. After round 1, I got a gadget that makes the car tilt to one side on turns. Later, I got a laser. I couldn’t get past the third stage, but this game actually makes me want to try again one day.
i think there’s a translation patch for knight rider, ao you don’t need to do thee phone thing
How about that! There isn’t very much text, but I’ll probably use that when I go back to it later.
not gonna front as soon as i saw this i looked it up on youtube to hear the knight rider theme pcengine style
