PC Engine: WELCOME TO THE IDEAL WORLD!

Blazing Lazers also let’s you earn a ton of extra lives by just not shooting or bombing the first boss at all. This is harder than it looks.

I think my favorites from 1989 are

  • Blazing Lazers - While it’s not nearly as flashy as, say, Soldier Blade, it might just be a little more fun to play.
  • Side Arms - A port that’s pretty close to the arcade version, which I adored as a kid. (I didn’t have a TurboGrafx as a kid. I got one from a Usenet auction in my late teens.)
  • Ys: Book 1 & 2 - I was very late on this one. I played it on the Wii. But it was great. And it taught me that Crystalis borrowed from even more sources than I’d originally thought. (Nothing wrong with that, though.)

I’m pretty sure I saw a tweet about that place shutting down in the last year or two. Unfortunate because that arcade was really special, but yeah the rest of the building gave me the creeps

Here are some pics from when I went in 2019:

Energy

This is one of my absolute favorites from this year. In spite of everything, the poor jumping, bad shooting, and grating sounds, this game is more inspiring than most. It is another Monster Party, another Maru’s Mission. It feels like anything could be behind the next flip screen.

The fantranslation was done by a pair of regulars for the PCE, cabbage and onionzoo, the same team that worked on the Youkai Douchuuki translation. It plays a little bit like Mega Man or Metroid, but broken. Shooting while jumping makes me freeze midair. If I tap down while jumping, I immediately fall to the ground. Holding jump and down gives me a weird, clipping animation. It’s not always clear that my energy blasts are hitting the enemy and bosses still shoot five seconds after they die. None of that matters. I am fully engrossed.

made it to stage 7 of blazing lazers and i frankly think having a difficulty curve of nothing for 20-30 minutes before ramping up into a wall is criminal for the genre

or maybe not. the real problem is just that i don’t care for it so it feels like the game is wasting my time

this two-headed dragon in a rock was cool but had a nothing pattern

played two dungeons of neutopia. it’s good, but doesn’t really have an aesthetic or mood to carry it for me so rather than being put off i’m just not feeling a need to see more.

Nice score! For me four years ago back when I still played flashing shooty games, ^ _^ GunHed (Blazing Lasers; took me a bit to track down via the name change ; ) got hard starting around Area-6. Never did beat Area-9! Good sprites in that game.

oh hey, last alert came out this year. it’s a decent enough military shooter, though bloody wolf eats this games’ lunch by the end of the first level.

it’s really only known for its voice, uh, “acting.”

Cratermaze/Doraemon Meikyuu Daisakusen

It’s an update on Heiankyo Alien, so that means digging holes and burying foes. It was first made with Doraemon characters and then originals when brought over to the States. I talk a lot about how games on the PCE are too hard, but this is one that’s probably too easy for its own good. On the standard difficulty, it’s not even possible for me to fall in my own holes and I have a full 8 minutes to complete the stage. The next setting is a little bit tougher, but it’s still not very challenging. Anyways, the soundtrack is fantastic, with some differences between the two regions. That’s because the Doraemon soundtrack was composed by Jun Chikuma, well known for her work on the Bomberman series and Legendary Axe. Take a listen!

Break In

Break In is a billiards game with a surprising amount of features and intuitive style. There are multiple games I can pick, from standards such as eightball, nineball, and rotation to more esoteric games like carom, yotsudama, and bowlliards. The computer is gracefully bad at times, which is great. I would be horrified if they had superhuman accuracy. There’s even a section of the game where I can train with different kinds of shots. The trick shot category lets me become the terrifying killer-robot of my nightmares.

I’m declaring this the best PC Engine sports game of 1989. Billiards is just good. Any sport that you can play inside is good.

Oh wow Break In! I forgot about that one. Plays good. Once saw a computer player carom the ball off two other balls, twice off the bumper, and into the hole. Love the '20s atmosphere.
