Noom the Dark Ages (Formerly Coffee (Formerly Eternally Doomed (Formerly Nu-DOOM Murder Junkies (Formerly I played the Doom closed alpha on PS4))))

yeah but that’s awesome

cool music too

i really think this view is because we’re still too close to it. if the de facto standard dual-analog FPS+controller control scheme is ever superceded, i don’t think this notion would hold up anymore… not sure i’m making enough sense

e: ok, here’s an example. i really enjoy dos doom. you can only play it using an antiquated control scheme that could easily be condemned as obselete and irrelevant. yet it works for the game, and a valid argument can be made that adding in mouselook etc creates situations the designers never intended and impacts the game’s balance. i just feel like we can’t easily separate the control schema from the games they accompany. in metroid prime’s case, particularly, the design is coherent across all of these elements. the counter-argument would be that metroid prime would be universally considered better if it adopted a dual-stick configuration. i don’t think that’s true.

also i’ll stop sidetracking this thread

Yeah, I think an argument can be made for a shooter built around dodging and utilizing the environment for cover while securely locked-on; Metroid Prime makes a decent case for this in hard mode on certain bosses.

As to where to go from there – Retro didn’t figure it out. 2 takes the level design into baroque madness (the first and only game I can’t find my way across the world on my old save because I can’t remember the strange movement modes and connections between zones). 3 is just a sad attempt to fuse western cinematic trends on a shoestring budget and with no experience and the whole artifice collapses into a smoking pile. The ashes could only be read to say: who is this for?

You can play DOS Doom with a mouse just fine.

Adding vertical mouselook to DOOM doesn’t actually assist you or unbalance things; it just makes you slower and worse because you’re trying to aim when you don’t need to.

It’s cute that nedge detached my condemnation of MP’s combat in particular to imply I was hating on it wholesale.

No one actually likes MP’s combat in and of itself. It consists of spamming pew-pew while lock-on circle-strafing against largely unthreatening enemies, blinking without reaction to each little pinprick until they decide to bloodlessly explode.

This is a DOOM thread. DOOM 2016 has the most visceral, reactive, lethal and satisfying gunplay we’ll likely get this year. As for the level design, it makes more sense to compare it to uh DOOM or other actual FPS games and not first-person action-adventures with perfunctory combat roadblocks.

MP is great and important for what it is but it is holistically irrelevant to DOOM and, well, FPS games in general these days.

unreal

I’d have to play past the mine level to tell you, but that game definitely does not get enough love.

you weren’t the only one talking about metroid prime

some of us (spoilers: me) don’t care at all about “visceral” and “lethal” gunplay, so the constant emphasis on how hard things die in one game versus another is not a point of consideration. I mean, the cacodemon death animation is pretty fun, but it’s not exactly what I think of when I think of doom

Would you kindly stop telling people what they can or cannot discuss in a thread?

Listen Botagel we’re definitely not discussing BioShock ITT

I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE

Metroid Prime really does not hold up. Has less to do with the gunplay – which is a better than adequate translation of Metroid shooting into 3D – than it does with the aggravating backtracking, constantly respawning enemies with too much health, color-coded doors brought to their extreme, and the second 1/2 of the game being an inexcusable fetch quest.

what in the whole shit are you even talking about

who is diamond is this someone who showed up during my years away from sb

they’re someone that shows up, talks a bunch of shit and gets banned every year or so since they were 15.

I don’t believe I did that; I’m just explaining where I’m coming from.

In a year dominated by health bars above enemies, damage numbers, hitmarkers, and the T rating, DOOM’s enemies’ heads explode into visible scraps when you land a single ace headshot on them.

speaking of HEALTH how about we get some CONTINUITY OF CARE in neo sb

destiny has more satisfying headshots really when you get down to it, DooM doesn’t want the player to get headshots because if they do they miss out on our totally sweet canned animation that you will see a thousand times by the end of the third level

I mean part of my problem with the rally mechanic is that the amount of health you get from killing an enemy like that is negligible (usually +5 if you’re above 40% health) so its usually better to just wait until you’re at like 20 HP because the game will automatically kick out a good 40+ to 50+ health when you just regularly kill a guy and your HP is low.
