Noom the Dark Ages (Formerly Coffee (Formerly Eternally Doomed (Formerly Nu-DOOM Murder Junkies (Formerly I played the Doom closed alpha on PS4))))

Also the “politics” in this are reprehensible inasmuch as they even exist. Even floating the idea that the left uses “political correctness” to coerce people into accepting an invading force as simply misunderstood people who we should embrace is grotesque. Specifically the whole “please call them ‘mortally challenged’ instead of demons” and “let’s embrace our guests with open arms” things are transparently fucked up, and I hate it.

The only saving grace is that they weren’t thoughtful or creative enough to actually put these politics any deeper than “a hologram says stuff that is obviously stupid.”

Well, these are PR messages from UAC, so you see, what it actually says is that neoliberal capitalism will coopt the real language of social justice for corporate ends,

All the attempted worldbuilding blows and so does the combat design, this game sucks!

still gonna finish this game though

It’s a very 5/10 game, play and finish it once and never play again.

“You can’t just shoot a hole into the surface of Mars!”

Objective: Shoot a hole in Mars

That actually made me laugh. I knew I wanted to talk to Hayden.

Welp, it’s done.

I never really got good at this game, just slammed my face against it until I beat it. I used the slayer armor, which basically makes you nigh invincible but only shows up if you die like 8 times, on the horrible maykr boss and the first phase of the Icon of Sin, though it wore off for the second phase. My problem with that boss is that it’s the only time in the game where powerups respawn, so I spent the first phase just trying to conserve my Big Sword when I should have been using it basically all the time. Finally got it on the second phase.

The story bits continued to get worse throughout the game. Doomguy was much more likeable when he was punching screens and ignoring what the voice in his earpiece was telling him to do. Love that Hayden shows up just to tell you about 6 times that “The longer the icon of sin is on earth, the stronger it gets” and also dump some lore on you that you would have gotten by reading the one hundred million codex entries.

I’m actually a pretty big defender of nudoom but something about this game is depressing. The combat is really prescriptive, or at the very least encourages finding a single solution to a problem and sticking to it. For instance, unlike @Tegiminis I used the minigun a lot with the shield upgrade to kill some of the bigger monsters. But once I figured that out, I never did anything else.

I dunno. I kept thinking that the game would be way better as a top-down twin-stick shooter, y’know? Like, the piece for me that kept killing me was the fact that there would be like 8 giant monsters on the screen and they all moved really quickly and I couldn’t get a good sense of what I should be prioritizing, or sometimes what I was damaging at any given second. I think having a top-down view of everything would have reduced the cognitive burden and let me do the interesting things this game has to offer: target prioritization, movement, and switching weapons intelligently.

Anyway I had to finish this game like it was an itch so I’m glad it’s done and now I can play or do something else with my free time. I was always going to try this game, so I’m glad I got it out of my system.

I’ve been freezing coffee in an ice tray and using the resultant coffee cubes to turn hot coffee into iced coffee without watering it down, it’s extremely nice.

absolutely, I pick them up with tongs because I don’t wanna get it on my fingers and subsequently everything I am wearing

I’m late but i’m finally coming around to playing the Doom 2016 and… it’s fine? I just got out of hell. playing on the ‘normal’ difficulty (hurt me plenty?)

I feel like this game really lives or dies on its level design, which is great in some parts and weak in others. the parts I like about this game are the Mars levels with colored keycards, which sort of feel like if Metroid Prime was a shooter (hu hu). clambering and climbing levels and secret hunting is a lot of fun. the combat loop of this thing, less so.

the combat is… idk, it’s fine. I was higher on the combat experience earlier in the game. i don’t love big stompy enemies which the game seems to be increasingly relying on. I’m pretty bored of the weapons, many of them just feel devoid of personality. I fully upgraded my micro missiles on the AR and spamming that is fun. remote detonating the rocket launcher is fun. i might be one of the few that really likes the plasma rifle. otherwise it’s just… makes some of the combat just feel like a more competent Serious Sam, run around in circles and shoot/glory kill the nearest enemy. maybe more strategy on the higher difficulties, idk.
the imps are super fun to fight, give them that. one of the few enemies that seems to use some brainpower. as well as the summoners. it really is nice when it’s either a gore nest and you can just go nuts on folks, or a more designed encounter with level geometry - but the things that are sort of in-between half-arenas that the game is full of, those i find less interesting.

overall I think I was really digging the UAC setting and hints at backstory, then doomguy went to hell and all the personality went out the door. we’ll see how it goes from here

It really does come to feel like Serious Sam in the endgame with the excessively open arenas and the giant glorykill bonuses, but if you’re already feeling that way in the early and midgame the difficulty setting probably has a lot to do with it yeah.

Halo Reach on Heroic/Legendary is still my #1 Best Modern Shootman Experience. I never just play a level of something just to do it, without some kind of challenge, but I’ll load up Winter Contingency for some reason or another and end up playing all the way through Tip of the Spear just because.

I guess AI must be harder than it looks

also just catching up on thread and personally super bummed that id moved away from the “doomguy ignores instructions and causes problems” model of storytelling. I feel like that had a lot of room to work with and would lead in very interesting directions. if he had just been like a rage elemental (which ironically sounds like what he canonically is?)

Yeah Doomguy is essentially a normal human who just loves to fucking murder demons and anyone who might get in the way of him murdering demons, eventually imbued with some sort of ancient power that makes him invincible and even more rageful.

and yet, Doom Eternal is absolutely bent on putting Doomguy in situations where he must listen to people talk for a long time and respectfully honor the dead king of The Troops and all that stuff. Even once Robo-CEO shows up, there’s barely any of the “Fuck you, mr. talky, i’m going to blow up everything demon related” energy from the first game. It’s hugely disappointing.

Yeah I can’t guarantee you’ll love the game or anything but you should absolutely be playing on UV.

Alicia made coffee syrup today with some saved up leftover coffee. We use it to sweeten iced coffee sometimes since it dissolves easier than sugar or honey. It’s very good!!

OK, I’ve started a new save on UV as my completionist run. I really like the process of unlocking the secrets, and I’m finding the combat more fun too now that the difficulty is giving consistent feedback on my play.
