News Thread XII: Xbox Humiliation Ritual - Part 12 the 12th

There should be some law that says producers and rights holders of digital goods should release their source code after a decade of being on the market or something to that effect. All of these problems would be moot if there were an actual public domain for this stuff.

There is such a law, it’s just that it’s 95 years instead of 10. Whoops

What good is a law if you can’t rewrite it.

I haven’t bought physical games in a while but I do think I’m going to start buying dvd and blu rays for movies and shows again. I miss getting a dvd and it comes with behind the scenes/making of features and 5 different commentary tracks from the actors/directors/producers etc.

hey you should buy the 300 dollar 4K Panasonic player with Dolby Vision before it disappears into supply issues again

i was talking about video games so. . .

hey can I interest you in a 500 dollar Switch 2

Which one, the 9000 series one (or some similar cryptic Name)?

Just asking for a friend WHO has a Sony 4K Player and doesn’t Trust it to Last Forever, :tarothink:

Buying a used $100 Xbox One S from craigslist or marketplace might be the move if you want cheap 4K playback

I’m so grateful to my local public library for stocking Switch 2 games. There’s no way I’m paying AU$100+ to play Kirby Air Riders but I’m curious enough to try it out and I also want to retroactively get my money’s worth for buying this expensive machine. Being able to borrow new games for free and knowing that other people get to do it too makes me feel better than the alternatives of handing ever more money over to Nintendo or neglecting this single-use computer I bought.

I hope Steam and the console manufacturers eventually negotiate some digital service that allows libraries to lend out videogames like they do with ebooks and movies, but that seems like a massive effort to get off the ground. Catching a bus to the library to obtain a Game Key Card which authorises me to download a Nintendo game seems silly or wasteful in principle, but logistically this is probably the best possible solution for every party involved. Shame this is the last game console it will ever be possible for. But not for me really because I don’t need much of a nudge to fully embrace No New Games 20XX.

The future of games is putting a shitload of ROMs on an Android handheld and just grazin’ on PS2/Gamecube era stuff and back, handheld capability depending.

I think we will have tons of bad ass games and they will be better than anything any billion dollar studio could ever do…that is my opinion of the future…and part of the reason why someone should give me at least $150,000. It would be the deal of the century…!

Yeah I’m eating sooooo good for games right now and I’m barely touching the higher fidelity stuff. I have way, way too much to play that came out in the last two years.

(Which will not stop me from dropping everything else when DDD comes out…)

I agree with this, but it’s not very sustainable for people making games. most games just fall into a void. if you’re making them as a hobby, fine, but there’s a vast space between hobbyist games (and people financially comfortable enough to be able to make hobbyist games) and working for rockstar, and right now that space is even more volatile than the collapsing studiosphere

I think the near future of games are things that cost less than $10 on steam and that you can drop into and out of in a flash, run on really crappy hardware, and take less than 6 months of development time. The only way you can win on steam right now is via volume and platform effects and the only way you can win that is to make every pull of the slot machine as cheap and quick as possible. It’s aint great.
