The way I remember it, the ball doesn’t even have any kind of fake powerful animation/sound effect, it just travels through the air at a reasonable speed and makes a realistic hollow thumping sound
before I was a true doom jrpg fucker Daphny and I played a few hours of this together and I got through the first blitzball match before quitting. X-2 is a much better game probably because it gives Yuna some actual agency and, yknow, a personality. I named tidus “Meg Ryan” which Daphny still thinks is funny so that’s the fondest thing I can say about FFX!
the best part about wakkas ball being a weapon is that first sin fight where theres tiny sinspawns but BIG OL SHARK DAD BEHIND THE FIGHT
wakkas the only one whose attack can reach and you have to wait and watch him throw the ball SO FAR and so watch it bounce back. that shit almost makes the game good
final fantasy x starring meg ryan WAS hilarious, but the super funny thing that aged terribly was yuna doing her first soul freeing dance to remix to ignition
yeah in ffx you can kill god by throwing soccer balls at it, which i think is compelling even by final fantasy standards
the different wakka weapons are all named things like official ball, power ball, ice / fire ball but my favourite was the spiked ball which was just a volleyball with big videogame spikes attaches to increase lethality.
I forgot I made the FFX Ignition Remix AMV for you lmao. Jecht and R. Kelly are both canceled so it works thematically
I don’t have any nostalgia for X but it has a great combat system, sphere grid is cool and while the writing isn’t good it does a lot of unique things with its characters and plot that we rarely see before or since. I remember being particularily impressed that shortly after Tidus and Yuna kiss is about when Tidus can branch to learn white magic.
This game is great. Someone start an Okage thread.
Xenogears is so bad and dumb and yet I love it
FFX does have really smooth animations though
*Sphere grid sucks you guys quit saying its good
the sphere grid is better than ffix’s ability point system
and it’s better than junctioning I guess if you want your game to not be “broken” or whatever
Junctioning only breaks the game if you try to. I didn’t know about how it could break the game until I joined Insert Credit, years after 9.9.99
I like FF8 and I have always liked Juntioning.
I don’t remember FF9’s ability points. But that game did nothing for me, at the time. And I binge played it over a weekend. Sharing controller time with my best friend. So I didn’t play it over a month or whatever. For long, memorable exposure. Like I normally would with a JRPG.
neither of those had such a dumb effort to result ratio though
yeah junctioning rules, the real problem is they gave you unlimited cost free summoning so you never had to learn it
how do you mean
wait, ff9 had a special system? i don’t remember it at all.
like opening the menu after a battle and being like “can I be assed to click on all the str+1 boost in a row or do I not even care” was more tedious than anything in 8 or 9
yeah exactly
Yeah they definitely put too much emphasis on summoning in FF8. I loved all of the equipment stuff, the general battle system, the limit breaks, etc. But the game really just wants you to summon over and over and over
And on top of that they give a repetitive stress injury inducing feature, to boost summon damage. And of course you’re gonna do that. I mean come on. Its like telling someone on Hot Ones that you don’t have to take The Last Dab.
