Criterion Channel has a Paul Schrader collection up right now so i rewatched Taxi Driver last night for the first time in probably a decade. gotta be honest: i can’t see how making Travis Bickle a clown man would make that movie any better, but what do i know.

I coincidently watched Mashima for the first time last night. My friend said the scene with where they’re singing in the car on the way to Do the Coup was better than the similar scene in Wayne’s World. I have to agree.

Yes, that was pretty wild and I need to rewatch it to make sure I got what I think I was supposed to get out of that bit (we were eating donuts and drinking grape faygo so it was perhaps not the prime environment)

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote or Terry Gilliam’s Don Quixote is out in Japan apparently. So I picked myself up and went to the theater.

As Tigress said “This was a better movie before it came out.” It literally begins with after 25 years here it is the film. That’s already setting it up to be judged. Then it turns out the first 20 minutes are about a disgruntled genius director (Adam Driver) getting their dick wet and trying to rediscover his roots.

It turns out his roots were seducing a 15 year old barman’s daughter and lots of languid shoTs of this 15 year old. Shrug’s voice ran through my head the whole time. "Terry is a genius and he toiled to put his vision on the screen for 25 years. Here it is. Cancel Culture can’t stop his vision. If he wants to put his surrogate macking on a 15 year old and frame it as his glory days than we just need to sit down in awe.

I didn’t know how the film would end 10-20-30 minutes in because it wasn’t clear what the film was. It was much more controlled than Gilliam is. Which Gilliam without style is almost nothing. It keeps flirting with Gilliam-ness and then pulls back to tortured misunderstood director everyone wants to fuck.

I actually heard a couple of laughs in the theater which well I didn’t expect and I wouldn’t call it a comedy.

It’s not even that it thinks that highly of it’s genius director main character but he is the focus for the entire run time.

Eventually it ends like you expect it to. Did it matter? Did any of it matter? Does anything matter? It’s out and Terry can be done with it.

If any part of this has labored in his head for 25 years I’m sure it was being horny for a 15 year old. Who became a whore and must (not) be rescued by Adam? Look it is 10 year later so it’s okay now?

There’s also a rotting hog carcass so shrug maybe skip this one. Also there is alot of anti Gypsy talk.

watched snake eyes sick movie

I had written off Gilliam after Dr Parnassus but was still hoping he would come back with one more banger.

Alas.

Thinking back on his earlier work though, there’s been a gross creeper streak going all the way back to Brazil.

Still trying to tamp down the social anxiety enough to go and see The Color Out Of Space by myself but it’s only playing here at a couple of drafthouses and I don’t want to order food/drinks and talk to a server I just want to watch my damn movie in peace so fuck maybe I’ll just wait till it’s streaming somewhere and stay home and watch Repo Man again instead

I just want to make it clear in this thread that I may or may not have made a statement like this (I can’t remember!) but in any case Rudie is invoking my terrible instincts for Toxic Irony re: perspectives of/on gross dudes and their gross dudeisms not representing the true + strong opinions of A Shrug.

18 YEARS

I had this on dvd. Who could have imagined that almost 20 years later the movie would be in the can and my first thoughts re: both Gilliam and Johnny Depp would be “oh, that asshole again?”

Yeah I’m surprised by just how little patience I have left for Gilliam. I liked Lost in La Mancha when that was new but now I can’t imagine going back to it thinking what I do of Gilliam. Ever since he became overtly a reactionary chud I have had no time for this bullshit. He can make paeans to the power of creativity all he wants, but he’s a fucking hypocrite to do that after spending the last few years shitting all over marginalized people finally getting the same opportunities he received.
