MUWT 2: The Quickening

i like the stupid live action grinch movie because it’s the kind of noisy bullshit i couldn’t appreciate as a kid because i was too busy being overwhelmed

yeah ron howard’s the grinch is like the apex of meaningless adult jokes. a who key party, the grinch getting into a drunk driving accident. also the gag about jewish whos not celebrating christmas is fucking weird. the only thing that has made it seem like !% less grotesque over the years is the existence of mike myers cat in the hat which is truly, genuinely hellish.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the Grinch’s adoptive moms have a key party.

And there’s all sorts of weird race jokes like how the Grinch gets passed up for a ride by a cab (that seems to only have one seat, which the driver is sitting in) and asks if it is because he is green.

Also like the who’s look normal as kids, then at some point grow really weird faces.

Oh shit, and the whole thing takes place on a snowflake that I was just desperately hoping was in the St. Elsewhere snow globe.

isn’t the snowflake thing a consistent part of Suess canon if we consider that Horton Hears a Who has them exist on a tiny floater seed plant and also Jim Carrey was Horton in the movie for that but that’s animation canon but can the Blue Sky and Illuminaiton movies be canon with each other

anyway, when is the Grinch going to grinch the Cat in the Hat

It took the next day to remember that the point of this film is that homeopathy is real.

i watched the live action ghost in the shell and it had like, cool sets and makeup. i guess i’m mostly thinking about this character and this shot where she stares directly into the camera lens

the major’s entire character arc is like “doesn’t matter if i’m white or if i’m japanese, i’m just me ” which feels absolutely facile in contrast with resident evil the final chapter, where milla jovovich’s character is bequeathed the childhood memories of the woman she was originally cloned from.

togusa and batou get zero buddy moments. innocence is my fav ghost in the shell thing in part bc it’s centered around those two just being bros and hanging out.

i literally watched this movie yesterday and did not notice this gag, but that is weird as hell and kinda gross sounding.

anyway i revise my take on this movie: i like it because it’s fucking atrocious and jim carrey had to get CIA training to endure the apparently literal torture that was Grinch Makeup.

The Grinch is for nobody

Last night, I watched Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior for the first time. I see why Cuba likes it. Interesting how elements of it were prototypes for Fury Road. Obviously that’s often the nature of sequels, but it was still fun to observe.

I’d heard that Max had a dog, but I didn’t know about the feral kid. That’s a good character. Based on what he says at the end as the narrator, I couldn’t help wondering whether he might be one of the characters in Fury Road. (I can’t reasonably make any such connections, though, because I haven’t seen the third film.)

Mellenium Actress is out on Blu-ray.

I can’t remember if it never got a NA Blu-ray release or if this is a re-release from being underprinted and scarce for a long time.

Either way, its available!

I think Mad Max movies relate to each other like pulp serials; they’re all takes on a character with definable traits in a world of specific values, but they don’t have any plot or even worldbuilding consistency from title to title. And that’s reinforced in the way that most of the movies have a narrating describing Max as a mythic hero, who exists in tales around the campfire.

Beyond Thunderdome is Not The Greatest but I think everyone should watch it if only to go “oh that’s where that comes from!” roughly 900 times in a couple hours. Also Tina Turner is Something Else.

Miller only directed the action. Maybe only the Vehicle Action at the end? I could look this up but

It was The One FOX or Similar Had Rights To in the 90s so I watched the network tv version on about a billion Saturday afternoons.
