Movies You Watched Today: Return Of The Thread (Part 1)

Excited to have The Batman in 10-bit color and HDR to see the incredible selection of browns, dark greens, and grays but somehow no black in the color palette

X was fun, but I walked away thinking ā€œyeh I could have written that.ā€ If a movie were really good I don’t think I’d feel like that. But the way X stops developing any motives or mystery in the second act reminds me of a problem I have in fiction writing. Maybe I’ll lean into the weakest parts of my craft and become a successful screenwriter of modern horror movies.

Saw No Time To Die and I…didn’t hate it?

But it helped that we treated it like binging a netflix show, i.e. took breaks between each ā€œepisodeā€ to like, get snacks and shit. because it very much felt like 6 episodes of television smashed into a fairly unconvincing movie. The cinematography was incredibly boring, the plot made little-to-no sense, characters just appeared and disappeared as if they were dropping backdoor pilots in this (thinking of one in particular) and…yeah it was just a mess

AND YET i thought it was alright, I enjoyed most of it in the moment

I love how neatly they killed fucking everyone, they’re all dead. no carryover to the next film, nothing, wipe the slate clean. Well, other than the good guys, i guess, but they’re set up for a perfect ā€œOKAY LETS MOVE ON TO THE NEXT MOVIEā€ kinda thing

I did hate this though:

But by the end of the movie, she cedes the 007 title to him as a sign of respect, seemingly offering her approval and erasing any of his past misdeeds.

That sucked real bad and I hated it, but at least it KIND OF made sense in fiction. I just hate the metafictional aspect of that deeply.

Anyway would not recommend it to anyone, I can’t believe this cost eighty bajillion dollars to make or whatever, but it was ā€œfineā€.

Maybe I’ll like this one then

The Bad Guys is a kids animated movie that I’m positive almost none of you have heard of based on a series of very B- beginner graphic novels that sort of wend their way listlessly through an inevitable multiversal superhero plot thing that my kids adore. 15th book coming out in July, folks, it better be on your calendars.

Anyway the movie is tightened up as a kids’ Oceans 11 team heist movie and it’s quite delightful? Really nice visual style that avoids Pixar style photorealism in favor of some tasteful flat shading, really expressive animation that reminded me of good anime or Tartakovsky. I mean it’s just a kids movie I wouldn’t like actively recommend it to an adult but if you have to watch a kids movie for some reason it comes with my seal of approval, I was pleasantly surprised.

I really hope they keep the supporting cast even if there’s a new ā€œJames Bondā€ that isn’t Lashana Lynch. Q is perfect.

It’s really funny that the first Bond helmed by a millennial is so very Metal Gear Solid.

yeah, I haven’t really loved any of the last 3 Craig Bonds beyond the one or two early setpieces that are allowed to be good, they keep having these atrociously weighty final acts that feel like they come from an entirely different script written by Stephen fucking Moffat, but the supporting casts they’ve slowly put into place are great

My complaint about The Batman’s technical choices only got worse and climaxed with a fight scene that should be gunfire against pitch black but was instead muddy mush. Checked other versions to make sure I hadn’t messed up the signals at some point.

I appreciate the plot in general digging them out of the Nolan hole. I like Paul Dano’s performance in general, it’s good that you can be a Batman villain without Doing A Voice, but I am uneasy only knowing him for roles with autistic meltdowns. The writing is smart enough to want to touch on mental illness stigma as a fixture of Batman but not good enough to square that plausibly deniable circle.

Also fuck them for that kiss. Videogame-ass mandatory bisexuality.

I really liked that Batman spent most of the movie softly talking or mumbling.

Like Gordon’s just gotta vouch to the rest that, yeah, it’s cool, he’s just a Weird Little Dude Who’s Like That.

I kinda sour on the movie as a whole as time goes on, but that’s probably my favorite Batman As Batman performance in a while.

yeah. I like Pattinson a ton, I’m realizing – I managed to forget in the decade since Cosmopolis. I think the worlds that filmmakers are obliged to put him in are not always very good

Y’all should see High Life if you haven’t… that’s a bad world for batty boy

when are they gonna make a movie based on a matthew stokoe book :frowning:

there’s a scene where the villain of the film walks around with a handful of stolen cum so it has some stokoe-esque elements
