Supergirl (2026)

baffling how they managed to take all the things on this plate and came up with… this. Supergirl/Kara tries her best, but the script doesn’t give her anything to shine.

Also, this movie is not sure if it wants to be Star Wars, GotG or whatever, and if Jason Momoma playing Jason Momoa is one of your highlights, uh, well.

My favorite part in Uzumaki is the part where it zooms in on the wanted poster for Junji Ito like it matters to the plot at all.

My partner and I just watched The Gate with a friend. Incredible movie for fans of 80’s practical effects and little goblin guys

I Love Boosters looks good but mostly seems to be about Boots Riley patting himself on the back about what a good leftist he is

everything everywhere all at once for people who have watched no more than one instagram reel about marxism

I probably would have liked it more if my experience with boosters wasn’t people wrecking the bathroom at the club and trying to sell me hand soap and toilet paper when I’m there

Finally watched Heartworn Highways. Its a fly on the wall documentary about 70s country musicians. Lots of great western shirts and jeans and great music performances. Lots of little bits about how these people lived. Great to see a world I lived in where everyone smoked and doesn’t exist anymore.

You do gotta deal with “south will rise again” dixie talk, but what are you gonna do? You remember how minorities were cut out of country music even if they grew up with it and their own community. Fucked up how racist the south was/is!

I know what you gotta do

have you seen Country Music from 2019 is like a six part deep dive about country starting at the 1920s and it doesn’t ignore black people’s part in the genre

Does a character look the camera and say “surplus value” ?

I enjoyed Sorry to bother you but that sounds like a rough watch not going to lie

Supergirl - The lead actress and Lobo were good. The rest of the movie is pretty bad and a waste of potential. The comic it’s based on is so much better.

Close, a character looks at the camera and gives the wiki definition of “dialectical materialism” in between vape hits

It has much worse writing than STBY unfortunately

If it came from an actual studio, someone would have asked what the point of the demonic model subplot was, and he would have had to explain.

In the spirit of the July 4th holiday watched Jaws with my wednesday movie group. Really enjoyed the movie’s split between the two halves: the first half with lots of overlapping dialogue and characters who show up for only two scenes. During this the trio of characters who embark on the second half of the movie establish themselves as the ones who speak with enough conviction to cut through the overlapping dialogue of the crowd.

During the shark cage scene, which was from a second unit and included some actual shark footage, there was one shot of the shark with some uncharacteristically animated wriggling, and fool that I am I thought they just made a shark model for wriggling. The special features set me straight, as their second unit director talked about how they were failing to get any usable footage out of their sharks because the sharks aren’t aggressive unless you bait them, and then one of the sharks got caught in the cables of the cage and dragged it down as it attempted to get free. The director kept talking about how annoyed he was that it was breaking his cage, and offhanded mentioned that the shark “got free”, and man I sure hope so.

Anyways probably not going to watch Jaws again.

A month ago I attended a live recording of a movie podcast (a client of my friend who’s a personal trainer) and they were talking about Jaws, a movie I have never seen, despite being a huge Roy Scheider fan and knowing it to be great. The entire time I nodded approvingly when it seemed appropriate and shook my head when everyone else seemed to deem this correct. I was able to glean that the shark kills possibly the entire cast but explodes, it also seems to be the case that the mob is involved with the governance of the town (though this could have been something from the book it was based on).

This means Jaws could not possibly have survived to Jaws 2 so I imagine this must mean that Jaws is an entity like Godzilla that is a manifestation of nature’s wrath, which would explain why it’s really huge (which is true?). The question is: Are any of the future heroes aware of this spectral nature or do each of them go through the Jason Vorhees situation where they slowly realize he’s supernaturally powered?

i think for the sake of preserving wonder in the world no one should answer any of those questions

I got an e-mail a while back from Night Flight about a movie called Obex, so I watched that with a friend last weekend. I think the less you know about Obex going into it, the better because it kind of goes all over the place. It’s basically about a shut-in’s search for something important.

I also saw Haunted Ulster Live last weekend; it’s basically just Irish Ghostwatch, but with more of a WNUF Halloween Special tone. I don’t know if it’s really worth seeking out unless you need something to put on. It tries to pull some Koji Shiraishi timeloop shit, but by the time it does it, the movie’s already like, 5-10 minutes from being over and up to that point, it’s mostly just aping Ghostwatch.
