I didn’t see you mention Bedtime Stories which is some of their best stuff

I was a few episodes in when HBO Max took all their stuff down, but yeah I gotta rewatch what I saw and watch the rest. For Angel Boy…

One of the greatest uses of Under Siege 2’s Kurtwood Smith, up there with Robocop

My movie theater is showing a few movies across its 7 screens from 6PM to 6AM. I have to pick 3 to 5 from this list. What would you choose

  • Coup de foudre / Entre Nous (1983)
  • The Driver (1978)
  • Footloose (1984)
  • Haxan (1922)
  • The summit of the gods (2021)
  • Una giornata particolare (1977)
  • After hours (1985)
  • Time and tide (2000)
  • Open your eyes (1997)
  • With a friend like Harry… (2000)
  • Dogman (2018)
  • High tension (2003)
  • The piano (1993)

I’d go
Haxan - absolutely, does it say what the audio accompaniment is?
After Hours - I am a simple man that likes a Scorese Hell Comedy
The Piano - There were SO MANY jokes about this movie in the 90s and I don’t know if any of the joke tellers even watched it. Looking at the trailer it has a lot the actors/characters being miserable in Real Weather and that rocks.

Can personally recommend the driver in a theatre. Is it 35mm?

Time & Tide !!

Definitely After Hours

Haxen is pretty long for a silent so hopefully they have some live accompaniment to spice it up.

I’d pick the same ones Rudie did. Haven’t seen the Piano though

After Hours is fucking great, one of those movies I consider a big influence even though I was ripping it off before I ever saw it. One of the best New York movies.

a criticism i sometimes hear of After Hours haters is that the protagonist is a “loser,” but i feel like that ultimately misses the point. definitely one of the best NYC portrayals of just trying to get home after midnight and shit keeps going wrong

Yeah he sucks the tension would be unbearable if he was more likable!! That’s why the whole movie works!!

Saw The Sheep Detectives in theaters last week. It was really good! I cried :cryingpig:

I also worked on the ending credits sequence for it, so go see my name near the end of the credits scroll lol

I didn’t wanna be the guy to comment twice in a row, but the day after I saw Hokum I saw Obsession

With every horror movie trying to be The Babadook It Follows or Hereditary or whatever “elevated horror” is, I’m always skeptical of hype surrounding upcoming horror films.

But Obsession is a legitimately upsetting film.
I love the classic Monkey Paw story, and would call Obsession a “fun spin” on the concept, but really the movie is just… not fun. Not that its bad but rather Indie Navarette’s performance is fantastic but really distressing to watch.

I would recomend it to horror fans but i dunno if i am eager to see it again

Its always okay to rip off After Hours because it was plagiarized from a Joe Frank show in the first place

Besides what others have mentioned, Time and Tide is one of the more underrated tsui hark action movies. Absolutely insane setpiece in a tenement block

Thanks for the recommandations. I’ll at least aim for Time and Tide and After Hours.

Don’t know which versions the movie will get but I assume the best from this theater - though there’s definitely not going to be live accompaniment For Haxan (shown twice in one night, on the smallest screens)

After Hours is how I was introduced to Joe Frank’s work at 18. I had wondered why the first half hour of the movie was my favorite part and when I found out about the lawsuit it all clicked. I sent Frank a fan letter once and he was very rude to me lol

I was blessed to live in new jersey when the excellent freeform radio station WFMU would regularly play old Joe Frank shows so it was formative material for me. Before I even saw a single David Lynch film I was deeply immersed in surreal nightmares about american life

One of the comments on the youtube upload of Lies has a great anecdote of Joe Frank reacting to After Hours

When I first met Joe - I think it was the first time I was visiting his house. He was showing me around and then showed me his office. We were talking about movies and he asked me if I’d seen “After Hours” I turned and said, “That’s one of my favorite movies!” He then slowly fell to the floor, limbs akimbo.
