so someone had the idea of making our Halloween party a movie marathon of the Devon Sawa Spooky Triad (Idle Hands, Final Destination, 90s Casper movie) that we would dub “Sawaween”, and then all of a sudden the night rolls around and things start getting Real
Sawa-in
What do we call this t shirt style? I see it everywhere
It looks like people ripping off pen and pixel fonts. I’ve never heard anyone specifically call it anything. Fascinating stuff
I’ve seen people refer to them as bootleg tshirts but that doesn’t feel right to me
yeah that seems bad lol like it’s just erasing where it comes from entirely which is annoying because pen and pixel is like an iconic american digital art form that we don’t even talk about with the respect it deserves to begin with
sorry ronk this is adjacent to your fun tshirts for devon sawa you didn’t do anything!!
Long Way North (2015)
A young Russian aristocrat in St. Petersburg seeks to restore the honour of her grandfather by discovering the lost ship from his Arctic voyage. Failing to gain the support of the nobility, she runs away to Archangel & is immediately scammed. She works hard to fit in and eventually convinces a captain that she can locate her grandfather’s ship (and the ₽1000000 recovery reward)
(Davaï is a Russian word that is hard to translate but my wife knows it as a loanword to Latvian, meaning ‘come on/hurry up’, one of the original meanings)
another gorgeous French animation. nearly everything is flat shaded. heavily-detailed things or busy parts of the shot are strictly background details
classic mise-en-scène in it too, blocking, costumes, colour. the dark palette approaching the ice/winter following the natural lighting + the crew’s mood
youngest pointed out how the husky’s name (Shackle) is a Shackleton reference. another character is called Mowson (Mawson), a little something for the Australians??
there’s a couple of close-ups, I appreciate any filmmaker bold enough to get up the nostrils
the other close-up is Sasha ascending some stairs, evoking a telezoom shot that’s not quite tracking the subject, wow
the plot finishes a bit suddenly and not on a high note, the credits include some layouts explaining how it wraps up nicely. I’d rather watch Summit of the Gods again, but this was great
Yeah when it’s supposed to mean come on/hurry up etc in Russian my understand is that its davai-davai, the twice in a row is important there. That’s the only way I’ve heard it spoken in that context anyway
I use the word davai whenever I think there’s a remote chance someone will recognize it. I learned it from Estonians primarily as “Come on, let’s go/do it.” (They tended to use a different expression for “Hurry up.”)
davai also means ‘let’s go/let’s do it’
you hear it a lot during sporting events, very common cheer
It literally means “give” but contextually it helps to think of it as a demand “give it to me!”
I just want to mention that a popular Chinese cheer is 加油 “jia you” which means “add oil.” I often remember a crowd of kindergarteners chanting this in my head whenever I want to accomplish something.
I think there was a particular bootleg Aaliyah shirt that a lot of these are a copy of a copy of a copy of.
ooh that’s interesting, because we also have in german a similar phrase, “dalli dalli” (which is onomatopoeia-wise almost identical to the (south) korean “ppalli ppalli”
which is used in the same manner, like “go go!” or “hurry up!”
the more you know ![]()
Watched Mars Express
pretty good
this is the face I make whenever I learn there’s no warrant for roberta williams
I kinda hate myself for immediately clocking this easter egg and pausing the movie to screencap it
watching “Megalopolis”. Laurence Fishburne just uttered “heaven or hell?”
How’d you watch it? Plex?
