amazing
interesting set of symbols for the items. i wonder what the hit rate would be for folks who can’t read kana:
also interesting that Kraid and Ridley’s lairs are marked as being sub-areas of Brinstar/Norfair. The fact that Brinstar is that weird shape makes me wonder if they originally intended for Kraid’s Lair and Tourian to be in opposite places, but had to switch them around to make things fit. (This would be funny because it would mirror what they did with the Tourian’s location in Super Metroid.)
In some parts of it you can see faint Samus outlines
That makes me wonder what kind of process was used to make this map. I’m guessing a series of painstaking analogue photography and compositing techniques that nobody knows how to do anymore
there is some decent overview info in this thread about the history of game magazine screenshots
This very broken old HG101 article goes into it too a little bit.
High accuracy composite ntsc video printers for medical imaging have existed since the 80s. (Based on ebay listings; I considerd getting one to make videoart prints) I always wondered if people used those in game mags. You could use a razor and magazine layout glue board (dont recall the name) and re-photograph the result.
i gave up on x-fusion a little way into sector 6, but i liked the sense of place of the bubbly crocomire zone. i think these extra-long drips added to it
Metroid Ravenous
om nom nom
will this have as much cannibalism as the film
happy 40th birthday samus. you can have two legally distinct games made by friends:
furry protogen not-metroid: https://mididog.itch.io/prototroid (very short demo)
extremely-pixely not-metroid: https://opossumcarrion.itch.io/demake86 (full (mini) game)
the first is quite polished, but very short. the author has restarted the project like 2 or 3 times by this point, and i guess this is more of a very thin vertical slice to showcase the direction it’s going in now.
the second is a bit jank (mainly in terms of graphical readability), but rather neat. the world is quite small, but it balances (?) things by having permadeath and no refills. features electrolysis.
What’s this? A Metroid Prime 2D game that’s complete?! You heard it right!
excuse me???
EDIT: wait this is by the same guy who made Castlevania Revamped!?!? (that CV1 metroidvania fangame)
EDIT 2: reddit link because the YT vid got nuked for weird non-copyright reasons (??)

EDIT 3: pssst
I’m like three hours in and it’s still somehow impossible to tell if I like this. Goddamn is it pretty though.
sounds like the Metroid Prime 4 Experience™
don’t tell anybody, but an “SM from memory” project might be on the table (currently collabing with a couple of people an getting a feel for the viability/workflow):
pondering if the ideal platform for Metroid II is a Texas Instruments calculator
I think I decided I probably do not like it but it’s kind of really interesting to contemplate why exactly a game with a mandate to be open world consists of one big desert and 4-5 linear tubes that it tells you that you can do in any order initially but you super can’t.
Amd also if you dare dick around in the desert too long the game will yell at you for not doing the next linear step.
Some of the linear stages kinda work as that and I kinda wonder, as much as it would be heretical, if this game would have been better as just one long FFXIII style tube where the team that mostly made donkey Kong games could just focus on level pacing and set pieces. It feels like that would have played to their strengths a lot better.
one of my conspiracy theories with this game is that they were forced to cut three whole areas from the world at some point — an open structure would make more sense if there were more than two destinations available when you got the bike
(either that or the person who designed the master teleporter and the person who decided how many keys would slot into it were not on the same page)
the “you can go anywhere” line being in the final game feels like as much of an apology as it is a lie imo
