methods of input

i wish motion stuff would fuck off forever

though replaying botw i did consider making vids of myself fighting with the motion shrines on a dualshock 4

Add Ring-Con shield support into Skyward Sword.

if they’re just doing straight Wii emulation, the input would expect the camera feed input of the IR camera and its triangulation with the sensor bar, the joycons are more accurate, yes, but the right joycon only has an IR sensor on the bottom, meaning that either you ask players to hold it upside down or require a replacement to emulate a Wiimote and in either case, you would still need two lights or points to triangulate from, so if you’re going to require a sensor bar, might as well require a motionplus Wiimote-like

the GCN controller shell seems extra considering a controller through the adapter can have its analog triggers addressed by games but let’s be honest, the GCN adapter is a niche, legacy product (albeit one that’s made for the second or third best selling game on the platform)

no, that was too much of a serious post

I better make a shitpost to throw people off

the shrines are bad

play Splatoon, know the truth

oh, also, Wiimotes are ambidextrous whereas joycons are inherently coded for a hand

i was so excited about that but it seemed like so many games implied right-handiness that it wasn’t worth trying to make work

So many DS games clearly punished Left Handers (Dawn of Sorrow).

Dawn of Sorrow punished everyone because you had to have both hands on the DS at all times to fight bosses, then SUDDENLY WHIP OUT THE STYLUS to finish them off. This timing was precise enough that I couldn’t pull out the stylus in time even though I am right handed, and resorted to holding the stylus in my hand while I fought the boss. This of course lead to me dropping my stylus on the bus and losing it forever.

But yeah worse for left handers but what a truly egregious mechanic

I had a fun time doing a restoration of my wife’s NEO•GEO PAD 2 for PlayStation 2 recently:

It’s a neat controller, and I was hoping it would scratch the itch I found out I had when I played some KoF on NEO•GEO Pocket. The throw on that stick is unfortunately way wider and less precise-feeling. There’s something about the Pocket’s which really works for me.

I know from being in there that it’s using springs to create the deadzone, does anyone know if it’s plausible to swap in longer/stiffer springs and make the actuation window tighter? I’m not even sure where you’d look for them haha

Alternately, I think I need someone to build a version of this cartridge but for NGP: https://shop.insidegadgets.com/product/wireless-gameboy-controller/

Robert Dunn of MGS tabletop Astro/MVS cab fame, has also been working on a contemporary NGPC-clone rPi emulation handheld, for the past couple years. He designed and 3d printed his own recreation of the NGPC clickstick (and the rest of it). A commenter already asked him to share his files and he, understandably, refused.

I believe he also used the mechanics as the basis for his (one-off?) miniature Astro-city cab’s, that Sega’s closely resembles, stick.

Not directly related to clicksticks, but he apparently just posted yesterday that he plans to build and sell more of these Astro sticks.

Motion being used as fine adjust on aiming kinda rules though.

My take away is that motion should only be used to modify actions.

hmm, buying a weird raspberry pi handheld explicitly to force it to just emulate a bluetooth controller? I’ve done worse

Those handhelds are gorgeous. Six standard face buttons plus two buttons for tate!
Why is he working on them? Is he planning on mass-producing and selling them?
I’m not on Facebook and it seems like he probably posts all his information there. His website seems pretty barren.

He def. wants to sell them, seems complicated, I’m not sure if most of the backers of his previous tabletops Kickstarter ever received their units? etc.

He delivered a couple units a couple of years apart and 80%+ of the units never materialized.

Looks like Sega is resurrecting the Virtua Stick High Grade for the Astro City mini.

To be honest, I’m a bit conflicted. The VSHG is possibly my favorite fightstick ever, but the design language matches the Lindbergh moreso than the Astro City. I would have been happier if they resurrected The Virtua Stick Pro (that giant Saturn dual player stick) for the Astro City Mini instead.

damn it’s good

though, importantly, i wonder if the top panel is printed/vinyl-wrapped metal or a clear plastic cover with a graphic underneath

edit: disappointingly it seems like it is a clear plastic top panel from this higher res image, although could be mistaken or just a mockup

i didn’t really understand in the video, but now I do, they are going to sell a separate $30 plastic stand, and matching mini stool, for you to mount the Astro Mini on to make it a tiny full-cab instead of a tabletop.

Really wish this was a full size cab and you had to wrangle that ball top with both hands!
