methods of input (Part 2)

Gosh dang. After getting a replacement PS5 controller for Father’s Day both my 8bit Pro2 (Mister) and my Xbox Series Controller (PC) have started stick drifting.

I never had this problem before. Are controllers just worse made now? I lost all my lives in ZeroRanger because of this. Will I be forced to use this switch pro-controller? Or forced to return to the world of Playstation 4? Each option more terrible than the last.

Glad it happened while a friend was here so I can verify it.

What if this is the result from dozens of undetectable static shocks like that Ikea chair that murdered computers?

I think the overall quality of nearly every manufactured product on Earth has declined. I just got brand new appliances for my kitchen 18 months ago and I’m sure I’m probably living on borrowed time

Oh? What’s this about? I’m intrigued!

the ps3’s pretty permissive about USB devices so i got a mayflash adapter to use my wii U pro controllers on them back in 2013

iirc you still need a licensed ps3 controller to bring up the XMB but you can navigate the XMB with any controller

pressure-sensitivity won’t work

obviously that only made sense because i already had the wii u controllers, but if you have another controller you like already, look into USB adapters. e.g. the magic-NS works on a ton of different HID devices

System Compatibility

Switch . PlayStation 3 . Windows . Steam Deck, Raspberry Pi. macOS . NEOGEO mini . NEOGEO Arcade Stick PRO . SEGA Genesis Mini . SEGA Mega Drive Mini . Sega Astro City Mini

Controller Compatibility

Bluetooth Controllers: DualSense, DualShock 4, DualShock 3, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One Bluetooth controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Switch Pro, Switch Joy-Con, Wii Remote, Wii U Pro.

Wired USB Controllers: DualSense, DualShock 4, DualShock 3,Xbox Bluetooth Controller, Switch Pro, ASTRO Gaming C40 TR Controller PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 SCUF Vantage 2 Controller, SEGA MEGA DRIVE and SEGA Genesis Mini USB Controller Pads, Logitech rumble gamepad F510 and F310, PS Classic Controller, Switch Taiko Drum, PS4 Taiko Drum.

if you want feature parity with the dualshock 3, retro fighters makes a bluetooth version of the defender with rumble, sixaxis, and pressure-sensitive buttons

it’s kind of pricey ($45) but it’s a brand new wireless ergonomic dualshock 3 replacement

i don’t think hori ever made a wireless pad with sixaxis and pressure-sensitive buttons for the PS3 but i may be mistaken

same goes for 8bitdo but any of their wireless pads would work with their USB dongle (maybe bluetooth). i used the ultimate bluetooth with mine before switching to pressure-sensitive options because i was playing MGS2/3

I had more PS3 controllers break down on me than all other PS systems combined. = P

that retro fighters pad is exactly what I’m looking for, thank you!! didn’t know this existed

Don’t think so. Older controllers were cheaper so they would break in other ways before stick drift became apparent.

They also had frankly ridiculous deadzones which would hide stick drift for longer

almost every controller since the ps2 has had ALPS pots in them, too, so it’s not like one company is using particularly bad parts. they’re just all using a part that shows mechanical wear

still waiting for the bleeding edge trends in boutique analog stick design to loop back to optoelectronic mechanisms

all but the most blown-out xbox/8bitdo thumbsticks should work fine after calibration if they’re drifting without. game controller dialogue in windows, evdev-joystick on mister

retro fighters pads are True Garbage even at half the asking price imo. brook wingman xe 2 adapter is the way to go for ps3

I had all of my hori pads during the xbox 360 era get stick drift, I just didn’t know it was a thing at the time

I can’t believe my Switch Lite doesn’t have drift

hard to get stick drift if you’re using your Nintendo Switch correctly i.e. only powering it up to play NDcube’s magnum opus Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics

I recall people telling me the PS what ever controller has a bad dead zone and it made Arkham (I think) feel bad. Looking into the issue I plugging all my PS 1-2-3 controllers into my pc and found that there was a minute value change (deep in the decimals) if the controller is so much as touched. I assumed they had none because any degree of dead zone would have made high speed driving in Granturismo 3-4 impossible. But I had to know.

This makes me wonder if some people wear out the center part of their controllers or if its psychological or the result of certain game titles inserting a dead zone etc. Mysteries abound.

I think the only controller Ive ever worn out was the B button on my favorite genesis pad but I also seem to magically make my tools and other things last longer than average.

yeah it was game dependent, and probably bios dependent as well. Plugged into a pc, you wouldn’t find any deadzone

i still have my nes controller that i would literally wrap the cord around my arm so i could slam it into the floor as hard as possible over and over when i sucked at a videogame, works great

my snes controller that i still have as well has a sticky select button tho, so that no one but me can press it with any kind of consistency. like im so used to pressing it stupid i dont even realize im doing it, i just think its normal
