methods of input (Part 2)

This set up–ancient generic Dell mouse–on the left side because reaching across the wider right side of keyboards to mouse is less ergonomic, darn it (left-side mousing turned out to be a way easier adjustment than I’d thought it would be; does being left-handed actually help with something?)–and new Microsoft Sculpt keyboard–has finally cured the lingering shoulder/nerve pain I’ve had for the past four years, which turned out to be due to squeezing my limbs together in order to work in the narrow space of compact laptop or wireless keyboard/touchpad combos. Yay! : D

Also this is the first time I’ve ever had a scroll wheel. ^_ ^

(Hm I’ve been tweaking my wrist trying to do the double-qcf motion for Ryu’s super fireball in 3rd Strike lately and now I’m wondering if it’s due to the switch to the mouse. Oh well nothing’s ever perfect. : P)

Yeah I saw a PT the other day and as soon as I move into my new house and have more of a real office space I’m figuring out a mouse/keyboard solution so I can finally escape weird chiclet keyboard hell

I just hate how they put the 6 on the wrong side on these ergo keyboards.

Oh! Oh yeah, I was going to rant about how it messed me up for Angband, because in roguelikes I use the VI keys for movement, where the diagonals radiate diagonally from the “H” key on the keyboard–but the “ergonomic” split configuration splits B, ie the move-down-left key, to the other side of the keyboard! D-oh!

So I had to do some extensive keymap rearrangement and shift the entire movement key set over to the right by one row of keys. ; ) Which is actually pretty cool since now the hand rest position for it lines up with the regular right hand typing position, so I won’t get screwed up when I have to switch from playing Angband to typing something. ^_ ^ Eh but then there’s stuff like the “tunnel up-right” and “tunnel right” keys now have to be in unintuitive positions due to weird low-level ASCII input system clashes. = o Fortunately I don’t do much tunneling so hopefully it won’t get me killed too often! : P

I type ‘y’ with my left hand, so split keyboards are non-starters for me

Ooh yeah that would do it. How’d you get started left-handing Y?

(My cheeky response was going to be just quoting the first part and responding with “Y?” ^ _^)

probably because of video games. ‘y’ was the default chat button in half life + mods so I got used to pressing it with my left hand.

I’ve been playing a lot of Monster Hunter recently and switched to Light Bowgun, which makes me mash the R2 button a lot and it’s been hurting my fingers. So I got an 8bitdo Pro 2 because it has buttons on the back that I can assign to be L2/R2.

I have small hands and find the PS5 controller uncomfortably large. I was shocked to find out the 8bitdo Pro 2, despite looking like a PS4 Dualshock 4, is actually the same size as a PS5 controller, at least when holding it. It’s uncomfortably large for me and my hand started cramping painfully when playing normally. I’m pretty disappointed

Frustrated with this, I decided to dig up my Dualshock 4 instead and just buy the attachment that added back buttons to it:

(Except I got the knockoff by Nyko because it was like $14 and all the reviews said it was literally the same thing)

Anyway, I should’ve just done this to begin with because it’s so much more comfortable. Unfortunately, both my Dualshock 4’s batteries can’t be recharged anymore so I ordered some replacement batteries that’ll arrive tomorrow. Has anyone done a battery swap for a Dualshock 4 before? Hope it isn’t too hard

Interesting! I was actually shocked how comfortable I find that 8bitdo after play sessions (the ps4 is also king for comfort for me.)

I should just get that stupid dongle already! I should order it RIGHT NOW.

Is that ridge where the SNES shape meets the handles a factor?

i’m having the opposite experience rn where returning to ps4 ffxiv after months of using an xbox is making me realize how much the DS4 absolutely kills my hands

I got these for my DualShock 4 after the stock grip pad on the DS4’s left analog stick started to melt/shred–not a problem I’d ever had on a DualShock before. Fortunately, these replacement grips fit well both on a DS4 analog stick with its stock pad–my right stick–and on a DS4 analog stick with its stock pad removed–my left stick; the replacement grip is slightly loose on that one, but doesn’t slip or slide at all in actual use. The grips feel sturdy, and the little nubs on them haven’t felt uncomfortable. I only wish the pack came with more of the black grips. ; )

I think it’s actually the width of the grips? Wait, lemme try holding them to compare to the PS5.

Ok, the way they both sit in the palm, the PS5 controller and the 8bitdo Pro 2 both take up a similar amount of space, which is, a lot of space. Meanwhile, the PS4 controller I can wrap my hand around much easier because it’s smaller.

But also I found the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller uncomfortable, heavy and large. It might as well be the Xbox Duke controller to me.

Don’t understand why they keep making heavier/fatter controllers. This is the exact opposite that my small, arthritis hands/wrists want!!!

I have been taking a six month break from ffxiv because the fucking dualshock ruined my grip lol. I have the back button attachment now too (thanks osb) but constant trigger squeezing and r3 hitting ruined my fucking hands. stupid bastard lying controller, I thought you were comfy!!!

I have large monster hands I just get too excited and squeeze things too hard for too long and don’t realize it I guess

would a “keypad” type thing and/or a mouse with a dozen buttons work?

both examples tragically rgb

yeah taking the plunge and relearning how to play the entire game on different input is the best and smartest idea but I flub on keyboard and mouse controls when there’s like, three buttons so I have to give up being good at a game and it sucks (temporarily)

The 8bitdo is almost small for me, but I am used to that because no controller is designed for my hands (giant palms, average fingers). The DS4 was pretty OK with that caveat, as is the Switch Pro. The only issue I had with the 8bitdo is sometimes it desyncing from my Switch, which sucked, but led to me fixing up my Pro so it is pretty alright.

I have gigantic hands and 8bitdo pro is the first controller since the xbox duke that just kinda fits my hands

  • Just remembered, the Sculpt’s USB dongle was preventing Windows from staying asleep until I went into Device Manager or whatever and I think it was unchecked “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” on like six or so HID things it creates. Sheesh.
  • Mouse started annoying my hand/elbow so much I swapped my old compact keyboard’s touchpad (it’s an Arteck bluetooth keyboard https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08SK8D38P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - fairly inexpensive, touchpad is in the right place and I like its physical buttons, it is pretty horribly inaccurate though : P) in in place of it, so I now have a second keyboard just to the left of the Sculpt, just so I can use its touchpad. Sheesh. Have ordered a Perixx wired lefty vertical mouse, we’ll see if that’s any better. If not…may have to order an Apple Magic 2 trackpad some day if I’m feeling wealthy, I dunno. Sheesh.
  • Ordered Sanwa wrist rest @doolittle recommended in the ergo thread ergo shit (doolittle thread) - #8 by doolittle . Had despaired of finding a decent one after flailing through Amazon reviews of the ones that came up via their search feature.

Update: Perixx v mouse immediately started killing my shoulder, am returning. Going to try a much more expensive, more vertical v mouse; if that doesn’t work, will probably give up on the v mouse scheme. Don’t think I’ll bother trying Apple trackpad because going back to old one was bringing back shoulder pains. Situation has improved since I found seat was lower than I’d thought, and raised it. Sanwa wrist rest is like ultra-dense black liquid solid jelly. Amazing. May not actually have a use for it but I love it anyway.

Update: More expensive vertical mouse (Evoluent) also immediately starts stressing out same muscle right behind shoulder blade. And the motion is bad with their drivers. Just gotta be careful with normal mouse I guess, have my seat at the right height and don’t slouch, and alternate sides every week or so probably, too.

Yeah I have been totally unimpressed with the PS5 I messed with but I love the controller
