melee island (fighting game club)

Wait, how the hell does the Rumble Fish 2 work?

I mean what a great name

So for christmas, I got all the Capcom anthology collenctions and wallowed in nostalgia,

I never knew Street Fighter x Marvel Super Heroes existed. I had Marvel Super Heroes but don’t think i ever found a second hand copy of Children of the Atom in the west of Scotland - I suppose a sign of how hard 2D fighting games fell off in the second part of the 90s.

Weird to play actual Darkstalkers games rather than just interact with the increasingly shabby sprites in later Capcom x games - it’s a whole complete world. Very disappointing to discover that Donovan is a charge guy. Poor Morrigan ended up a running sprite joke.

Really looking forward to the collection with Power Stone and Project Justice. Justice was always my Dreamcase white whale - I saw it once in the wild in a years long period of buying second hand games from pawnshops and it was the day before payday. I did have a well loved copy of PS1 Rival Schools - the purest concept of any fighting game and the idea of Ryu being a middle aged teacher who has had enough still makes me smile. My Higher chemistry teacher had 2 loves - Celtic and Bob Dylan. He played in the same schools team as Kenny Dalglish! Mentioning either topic would completly derail the class. He later got sacked after putting a pupil against a wall - my school was a real Thatcher legacy dump and assumabley went Ryu on him.

Looking forward to the Project Justice/Power Stone, Vs SNK collection but I realise my nostalgia for that era is rooted in the console versions of these games - fusing weapons in Powerstone 2 etc.

project justice is a really good game, that plus CvS2 makes the 2025 collection pretty essential by themselves, especially since flycast is a pretty shitty emulator and as a result neither of those games got a lot of support in fightcade (ok, CvS2 does ok, but man flycast sucks and only occasionally works for me when I try to play that game). never played the power stone games, power stone 2 is for me what project justice is for you, looking forward to putting some time into that.

along with the dragonland album battle of the ivory plains, project justice was a part of my first ever amazon order. i didn’t even have a bank account at the time, and had to give money to a friend’s dad to make the order for me. the reason was similar to winker’s post: i just never saw a copy of it for sale in person, and having loved rival schools on ps1 so much, i was desperate to play the sequel.
it’s a powerful game to play in your mid-teen weeaboo phase. the theme park, school rooftop, and night time street stages really feel like the idealised japan that exists in the minds of western teenagers, and the fact that project justice has a whole mode where you can just rotate a camera in the stages without fighters in them to pore over the details makes it even better/worse.

someday i’m gonna write up my thoughts on the first capcom vs snk and the interesting ways in which it interprets some of the characters

Have you tried Flycast recently? I haven’t noticed any problems running CvS2 with it. Haven’t tried Project Justice in it.

Not getting the CvS collection because some of the money might go to MbS who owns SNK now. I mean maybe it wouldn’t but who knows how these deals work–can’t be sure.

I assume this is a target render but if they get dynamic block animations working like this, [Gene voice] I love it.

Even for a fake videogame, that looks like a fake videogame.

Looks like they wanted to get the attention of Mortal Kombat players with that UI.

They made the Type Lumina HUD look even more plain and boring than it already was

I’m still thinking about how Harada was captain of the waseda university yacht club and itagaki took 7 years to graduate because he played too much mahjong

Looking at that, it’s hitting me that actual, real villains feel less common nowadays in fighting games. Most characters have high levels of hangoutitude now. So Vox’s straight forward villainy is kind of refreshing.
