Mega Drive Most Wanted

Maybe the Asian region MD mini edges out the jpn one for me because it has Alien Soldier

I really want to understand how to play wrestleball. It looks cool but I haven’t been able to figure it out. I need to find a manual or something.

From the QR Code at startup Sega has put high quality scans of all the manuals online.

Managed to finish Alisia Dragoon. The evil sorcerer dude was pretty nasty, although the actual final boss wasn’t too hard if you managed to retain enough health from the previous fight. I think I got the title ‘Goblin Master’, which I assume is kinda average. Does the ending change depending on which monster buddies are still alive?

Tried Wrestleball again and managed to get to the 4th quarter with the scores at 0-0, until the opponent managed to get a touchdown, godangit. Think I’m sort of working it out but it’s still very button mashy.

Outrun 2019 feels kinda weird, sometimes it is like there is some kind of steering assist going on where the sharp turns will act like you are on rails, then the regular turns will have you steering hard and flying off. The glass bridges that you can fall off the sides are kinda crap. Road Rash 2 is pretty awesome, though gets pretty difficult.

Snow Bros is the best, why are there no more Snow Bros games

there is another snow bros game, but it’s somewhat cursed

I need to try that and see if they have an english manual. I think the western name is powerball, so I can always google for a scan as well.

Oh no

This is some kind of bootleg thing right

It’s a little strange that the Powerball version isn’t on the mini, since every other game has its regional variants. I think I read that Powerball controls fairly differently as well, like the C button is for passing instead of dribbling etc. So the manual might not be as useful in that case

there was a small cottage industry in Korea revolving around ripping off Snow Bros.

I think they mostly added new elves

that one is the legitimate sequel though

I am in King Nole’s Tomb right now and Bonglord it is so long. This game suffers most from it’s minimalism. Each dungeon needed more individuality both macro and micro. I keep getting lost because if you break concentration for a second the internal map goes out and I am stuck running in circles for 10 minutes to find the one thing I haven’t done.

I played Dark Savior earlier this year and that pretty much addresses all my complaints while being weirder and then the final story being on a timelimit and involving too many throw things on things puzzles. The normal final dungeon is so great though. Ancient Sky City is way better than cave 7.

Green Maze I was just wondering around until I somehow solved it.

I love and hate how esoteric it is.

Images That Could Be Cropped Into Great Sigs

Duke Mercator is now my name in everything

Any relation to Weena Mercator, the hopping woman?

Finished Strider last night. I’d never played it or even seen it in motion before getting the mini, so I wasn’t expecting it to be so full of acrobatic motion and set pieces. It felt unfairly difficult to an almost hilarious degree in a lot of cases, and it was barely holding together most of the time. The giant robot dinosaur boss put the game into super slow mo, and there was almost constant pausing and flickering.

I love that the game basically looks like the Flash Gordon movie meets the 1980 Moscow Olympics. I went onto Youtube to compare the arcade version and everyone in the comments was arguing about Marxism.

Okay so I finished Light Crusader and I’ve mostly changed my mind about it. I think for the most part it is pretty decent, each level of the dungeon is different enough to keep things interesting and the game is short enough that it doesn’t wear out it’s welcome. There’s some cool gimmicks in there like the goblin village and the time travelling bit

Some of puzzles are still a bit bullshit, there’s a bit too much “Almost there… whoops you pushed the barrel too close to the wall, better leave the room and start over LOL!”

The giant spider boss was a bit crap too, I thought it was invincible because of how most hits wouldn’t register so I was wandering around for ages trying to find whatever item I thought I needed to kill it

I just spent an afternoon uninstalling Hackchi and installing Project Lunar so as of January 25th, 2020 here is the + and - s of both. (ah god damn discourse)

Hackchi
/+ Folder Support (allows you to add more than 100 games)
/+ Allows you to switch which of the base rom regions you want
/+ Proved that Aladdin and Marble Madness were just sitting on the console (???)
/+ Full Retroarch Integration (SNES, NES whatever)
/+ Let’s you launch games to Retroarch
/+ Retroarch menu button is better (Start + Mode) with Switch and XMB skin options
/+ Can set the base roms to different regions (Like if you are me and want your JRPGs in Japanese but Road Rash 2 in English)
/+ from the exe you can grab retroarch and Cave Story MD
/- no screenscrapper access
/- So you have to write your own description
/- breaks the organizational system of the mini, have to meticulously tag each game
/- Can add box art but the spineart is all generated and not scanned
/- Have to manually select region (Sonic 3 is region locked)

Project Lunar
/+ screenscrapper pulls box, spineart description much faster to add games
/+ organizes games automatically
/+ auto selects regions (Sonic 3 is region locked)
/+ newest version ships with the Genesis Retroarch cores
/+ Let’s you launch games to Retroarch from the mini menu
/- have to manually add cores through explorer and USB stick
/- Retroarch menu button is Hold Start for 2 seconds
/- No Folders (coming soon?)
/- Only option for base roms is to delete
/- does not unlock Aladdin and Marble Madness
/- need to use a USB stick and emulationstation if you want to use other systems (SNES, PS1, etc)

So the Retroarch cores are important for both, the youtubers concentrate on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles not having sound with the m2 emulator. Any EA game also seems to have problems. With Retroarch cores you get access to 32x games (almost welling run enough), Panorama Cotton, Pier Solar, and any rom you just don’t want to take a chance with M2 (Nightmare Circus and Bad Apple.)

So Project Lunar is a much nicer experience but you are giving up being able to do more (without a USB stick). As I also have a PS, SNES, and NES mini sitting in this apartment I’m not going to lose too much sleep. Oh yeah and the laptop I’m typing this on.

This has been The Rude Gamer make sure to Blood, Complain, and Bookmark.

Another plus for Hackchi is retroarch actually has shaders and doesn’t crash if you set them.

I really don’t remember the ending of Crusader of Centy and by did it screw me up. I played the Japanese version and they did a whole lot with different dialects.

Putting a big spoiler about Crsader of Centy ending here:

the first thing you do once you go back in time is steal a treasure that the towns people complain was stolen. Then maybe I missed it but it isn’t really clear why you are visiting these places and killing these creatures.

Then you get back to the starting town and watch a group of monsters that were locked in a prison get murdered without resistance in a church.

Then at the end of the final dungeon you encounter those same monsters and a much smaller version of the penultimate dungeon and display their horn to them.

“How long must we remain underground or in prison? We monsters live for hundreds of years. I do not remember the last time I’ve seen the azure of the sky. What has compelled your kind to seek out and kill us? To trample over us. Even knowing our plight you would still seek our leader?”

And it felt like the only true ending was shutting the game off. Which I did.
