I loved playing Desert Strike on my Atari Lynx back in the day but I think I never got past the final plane chase on the final stage. I beat it on the MD mini 2 using save states and wasn’t quite mentally prepared for the Republican As Hell ending where Reagan and his wife and dog present you with medals while Stars and Stripes plays.
Does anyone actually know how to play Populous? To me it just seemed like a bunch of stuff happening arbitrarily
I had a great evening with Warsong until the cart pins let go. Only game Ive ever returned to a used game shop.
If you want a good and fast tactics game on genesis check out Lord Monarch. It has a single currency gained by a tax mechanic for building structures. The units are produced regularly by towns (if they aren’t over taxed) and each unit has a single number that represents actions like building, fighting power and health. Ive talked about it in games played today at least once. It also has cute anime graphics and good musics. Its part of a larger series by Falcom.
It uses the Mega Drives ability to sound like blaring brass. Vibes: Bombastic and Regal.
lord monarch has an english patch but also when i tried it it seemed to just be playing itself? like i felt like i would have won the stage whether i actually did anything or not
I’m sure I’ve played a different time in my life but took focus of
SOCKET by Vic Tokai or Time Eliminator First in Japan. It’s a Sonic Clone through and through. You have no extra momentum method so I got stuck a couple of times on a ramp. The levels are very twisty turny with dead ends.
It looks very Megadrive to a fault and just sort of reads as visual noise. This gets worse if you turn on a CRT filter.
Despite there being individual stage hazards they lack individual identity and again just turns to mush in your brain.
Not a great Sonic-like, but also rises to the top by default ok the megadrive. I actually like High Seas Havoc though.
High Seas Havoc is good and I’ve been saying so for years. It’s basically A Standard Platformer that is completely unremarkable except it’s level design is ok and doesn’t fuck up the basics. Cute aesthetics too!
There’s nothing to actually say about it, just that It’s a Standard Platformer That Doesn’t Fuck Up. But also, it doesn’t fuck up!
Folks I’m gonna shill here because in my stupidity picked up a bootleg copy of Monster World IV and this thing is extremely nice. Full color manual, the case feels exactly like a Mega Drive case, the cartridge doesn’t rattle when I shake it (Paprium.)
Retro Classic Game Store
I’ll post pics later with the tobacco stained copy of Ragnacenty I also picked up. Really just want to replace this Ragnacenty with a fake. Same purpose for me anyways.
i got a bootleg of grind stormer a couple of years ago, and the box and manual felt very cheap. i’m glad to hear things have improved and/or there’s a better seller. however, an important question: can you save on your cartridge?
i got a legit copy of xiaomei last year, and i know how good it feels to hold a brand new and complete mega drive game and i would know that feeling again.
I assume Ancient and Sega still have a partnership, and this so clearly wants to be Thunder Force which Sega has the rights for. Imagine if Sega did the right thing for once and produced some new cartridges.
Id early love if someone (SEGA) had official retro console support and put out or licensed new stuff for Genesis. You could do a whole package with a dev environment for pc/mac.
The clones aren’t expensive and carts are fun. A native HDMI official sega genesis with real hardware would be amazing. Other than the Yamaha chip I dont know that anything on the genesis is a rare component.
i’ll answer more throughly when i get home and really manhandle it so it’s fresh in my mind, but my general sense of the City Connection cart was “well, they probably did their best for this very niche thing i now own”
i’ve said it many time before, but i’m very pleased with my xiaomei cartridge (published by columbus circle). the box and manual are both great as well, as if they fell through a portal from 1992.
as for aliexpress bootlegs, they wildly vary in quality. i have a full cart/box/manual bootleg of v-v/grind stormer. the box feels cheap, the manual is even worse, and the cartridge label is peeling. a cart-only bootleg i have of sailor moon is even worse. however, i’ve got cart-only bootlegs of a couple of sonic romhacks which are pretty great, and one of the darius port from the mega drive mini that, other than the logo on the back of the cart, could very easily be mistaken for a real cartridge, authentic-looking label design and all.
I’ve got an Alien Soldier repro supposedly made with all original parts–I must have bought it over a decade ago. It was from some independent seller with his own site that I can no longer find and there’s no signature on the product. He translated the manual into English and did the whole thing up to look exactly like a Genesis game. I wish I had bought his Monster World IV and MUSHA repros too.
