My last studio’s only game was a PvPvE extraction shooter that I sadly never got to play

343’s output has been good for these, Halo 5 and Infinite especially.

To get to the “everybody loves” era of Payday 2 you have to get through 4-5 years, nonsequential, of “What the fuck did the idiot devs do to Payday 2 in this update?”.

I’d argue that, like how Narnia is not Isekai, there is a dividing line between Payday 2 and an extraction shooter based on their mechanics. Payday 2 is just horde mode but you can risk staying in the arena longer for a better payout. Extraction shooters were a response to battle royale mechanics that start everyone on equal footing each match, and said “OK but what if you get to keep the good stuff if you’re really good at the game.”

People do seem to enjoy Hunt: Showdown.

hunt is very good i’ve played an embarrassing amount of it this year! it’s decidedly weird and not for everyone which is exactly what makes it good. matches are short enough that most of what happens is very meaningful but it can still be plodding and slow and tense at points. the gunfights can end almost instantly or they can be long drawn-out 20 minute ordeals of tight resource management and repositioning. it’s full of idiosyncratic mechanics and strategies and i’m still learning new tactics like 100 hours in. like it’s so fucking satisfying to correctly predict and shoot people through walls. it’s a game about gathering and exploiting asymmetrical information. rad game.

I don’t think I’m too broadly defining extraction shooters, I think game designers just enjoy taking a sledgehammer to the human imagination too much. I don’t know why so many of these are about collecting trash for example

hunt has no trash collecting!! you just collect objectives that’s it.

I know I’m really bad at that one though

why don’t the runners simply organise a collective labour agreement and not fight each other. pls let me shoot robots for 5 minutes and then argue for 15 in a work tribunal to determine who gets the goodies

The vibe is really cool.

it’s nice to have an in-universe justification for respawning… granted it’s the same one that eve online had back in (checks notes) 2003, but hey

here’s a video about marathon
