marathon (20XX)

I mean I kind of respect the “let’s do something with it, no expectations” ethos… remember halo was supposed to be third person rts

It’s 2024. I should have learned by now never to hope

Oh, to have a space kitten rest on my lap as I bleed to death from a fatal gunshot wound on an alien shore.

I really like what I’ve seen of the art direction and soundtrack. Really bummed that it’s a multiplayer only extraction game. Same with From Software’s Bloodborne pseudo-successor. I guess that’s where the money is now.

So if this game eats shit Bungie is done, right?

The art director covers the choice of art direction, referred to internally as Graphic Realism, in this thread.

Reminds me of old PSX/PS2 era glossy CG ads I’d see in game magazines. It’s a nostalgic look.

Yeah it seems like it’s probably the best version of the thing that it is but. I wish I could reward it for its art alone. If this was a sp campaign game I’d be crapping my pants

I feel like in all but the UI and cinematics, this game is just going to look and feel like Destiny, and evoke very little of what the trailers give the feeling of with the abstracted datatic real-time pre-rendered thing. guess i can just watch the trailers for all of time and go wow

i even like extraction shooters and this isn’t really doing it for me yet…

it looks like they barfed up a bunch of modern game design sensibilities onto a genre which is best when it’s janky and spiky imo

i’m not seeing a single reason i’d play this over like hunt showdown.

the aesthetic is nice though.

So should I play the original Marathon games?

I played the first one(?) on Mac as a young un but could never get past the first level

Absolutely yes. You can play them all on modern windows via Aleph One and they fucking rock. The first is kind of like a cool interpretation of Doom and the second and third go to crazytown

honestly getting Concorde vibes where they sunk a lot of time and money into world building and the core game is like “auhghhh whatever”
