jarpeegees you beat

As in seen the credits roll. I only managed to do it three times on “real” hardware:

Lufia 2 in 1997
Final Fantasy VII in 1998
Pokemon Red in 1999

and with Chrono Trigger around 2005 with the help of emulation

Flannel Fantastic VII
Mother 1, 2 and 3
Phantasy Star
Pogeymen Blue
Persona 3 and 4
Grandia II

…shit, I think that might be it.

EDIT: Adding as other people are refreshing my memory!

hmmmmm

lets try it

probably a lot less than I’d think. there are a whole lot of JRPGs I’ve played extensively but never beaten.

FF IV-X, Tactics, Mystic Quest
DQ 1, 5
Mother 2, 3
Chrono Tigger, Cross
Persona 3, 4
SMTIV (I NEVER BEAT NOCTURNE HOLY SHIT)
Xenogears
Both Sega CD and PS1 Lunar games
Grandia
Tales of Destiny
Suikoden 1-3
Seiken Densetsu 3. Maybe Legend of Mana…? I don’t remember
Vanguard Bandits
Langrisser IV
Mario RPG
Mario and Luigi
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
.hack The First One

that’s about all I got.

vagrant story
final fantasies vii viii ix x
chrono cross
mother 2
pokemon blue

that might be it, lol

Far more titles than my basic distaste for the genre would otherwise suggest but I guess I had to make sure or some shit

Never FFVII, so I consider myself pure still

What’s the deal here, bug?

from first to last in the order that I completed them:

Suikoden 3
For the Frog the Bell Tolls
Mother 3
Earthbound/Mother 2
Dragon Quest V

i’m including action rpgs, so there

soliel

ys 1, 2, 6, 7
legend of mana
final fantasy vii
breath of fire 3, 4
grandia
shining force cd
project x zone
suikoden
pokemon red, gold, pearl
vanguard bandits
wild arms
phantasy star 3 ( i think?)
phantasy star portable
skies of arcadia

wtf that’s way too many

on original hardware? way too many snes/psx square titles (I’m afraid to say most of them, but probably technically over 50%), and then almost nothing other than mother 3.

Gonna include action RPGS too.

EDIT: Hmm, now that I’m thinking about it, action RPGS are kinda nebulous. Does that also include later Castlevania games then? What does an RPG require? Stats and numbers and menus?

On original hardware:
Zelda Link to the Past
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII
Megaman Legends 1-2
Zelda Link’s Awakening
Pokemon Blue
Pokemon Red
Pokemon Yellow
Pokemon Silver
Pokemon Sapphire

Shin Megami Tensei IV
Etrian Odyssey 4
Monster Hunter Tri
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Dragon Quest V

For realz, as in by the sweat of my own brow so to speak:
FF 7, 8, Tactics
Chrono Trigger and Cross
Xenosaga 1, 3
Tales of Phantasia
Vagrant Story

And with FFT opening the SRPG window:
Front Mission 1 (both SNES and DS port), 3, 4
Super Robot Wars J, W, OG 1 and 2
Fire Emblem 6, 7, 8. 9

Not for realz, as in I got tired of this shit but wanted to at least see the end or just get done with so used a game genie/shark:
FF 4, 6
Xenosaga 2

Pokemon Red
Tales of Symphonia
Persona 3
Persona 4 (but I didn’t get the True Ending leave me alone okay)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Paper Mario

I don’t really include Zelda games but I’ve beaten a bunch of those.

Ones I’ve come close to beating but never did:

Secret of Evermore
Crimson Shroud
Final Fantasy VI

This is just a stupid list thread in which we admit our love / indifference / addiction to this peculiar genre of vidcons. I wanted to post in the Axe at first but now it is here. I started thinking about it because I am an hour into Mother 3 and pondering if I want to let it sit on my pile of GBA carts for a while longer, or just put it up on ebay. I realized that clever dialogue and lovable characters still aren’t enough to hold my attention in a game when there’s nothing else I enjoy. And I guess the rhythm-based battle system is cute and all, but I don’t like it. Looking at howlongtobeat.com is so discouraging.

I tried to remember if I ever really loved any of these games enough to play them to completion. And it did indeed happen at some point in my life half my lifetime ago. And it would’ve happened a lot more often, if more of them would’ve been released over here back then (here as in PAL land). They may have even been my favorite type of games at that point. But why? For the wrong reasons maybe? I never cared much about the stories.

I loved Lufia 2 because of the puzzles and the numbers going up. I remember beating up the same blocky enemies on an island for hours to get HP power ups until the number rolled over. Not my proudest moment. Quite an ulillillia moment. Also Ancient Cave! Must’ve spent more time in that than playing the “real game”.

I loved FFVII because HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THOSE GRAFIX. And even more numbers going up! Maxing out just one more materia for no reason! Breading gold birdies! Fucking up big optional boss monstas! I don’t remember crying when Aeris got pierced, but I sure was bummed out that I wouldn’t be able to see her lv4 limit break.

I loved Pokemon because my friends were playing it too, and I wanted to powa up my Pocket Monsters to kick their ass. Which wasn’t easy without cheating. And then we figured out how to cheat.

I loved Chrono Trigger because … I don’t know. It actually reminds me of Mother 3 a bit. No random encounters. Brisk as fuck. Nice looking and sounding. I guess I liked the battle system more? Also less talking? Also I was reading Dragon Ball back then? Hmm…

Anyway, I think I’ll use the Mother 3 money to get me more GBA Fire Emblem games.

I also got pretty far into Baten Kaitos but never really came close to finishing it.

I didn’t include ARPGs and SRPGs but you people can do whatever.

SaGa Frontier is really the most profound one to me.

Earthbound, FF4, 5, 6, 7, 12, Chrono, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Zelda SNES, Link’s Awakening, Tactics Ogre… surprisingly not that many. I started a lot of jRPGs, but never finished.

Ok, yeah, Tactics Ogre and Earthbound and FF4/6 maybe 12 were also cool, too. Secret of Evermore and Link’s Awakening as well. Chrono is a little too saccharine-duh-of-course for me.

Edit: Super Mario RPG, Front Mission (maybe my only emulated jRPG victory?), Shining Force, Phantasy Star Online, Mystic Quest, and Dark Souls. Ok this number is feeling a little better to me.

i think it’s more of a feeling than anything concrete. i mean, symphony of the night technically has more rpg stuff in it than link to the past, but to me it doesn’t feel like an rpg, while lttp does

Oh man, Symphony feels like the ultimate American jRPG.

Is it ok to say that I kinda hate Symphony?

Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia

Y’all are JRPG-liking degenerates

Now if you don’t mind, I’ve some generic multiplayer shootman that needs playing

A Link to the past ain’t no RPG wtf is wrong with y’all didn’t you have this argument on crusty message boards back in the geocites days like normal people

I don’t know when one can say they fully beat a MH game, but I had 330 hours on MHFU so yeah.

Maybe some others I am forgetting.
