RoK is a huge love letter to dragon quest and other early fantasy anime and children story books. The biggest tell are all the pun names.

are you in a country damned by the conglomerates? I’m looking at CR in a private window and the whole show bar the newest ep is available subbed for free

but also yes, stealborrowcheck it out from the torrent library

Isn’t crunchy making the move to where you can’t even watch free with ads soon?

yeah, they’re getting rid of the free tier
i don’t remember when but it’s prob soon

I think that’s just for current season stuff. Basically new stuff will be paywalled past the first episode or so, while old stuff is still free with ads. Supposedly those new shows would then eventually cycle to the free catalogue as newer shows come up, but we’ll see what happens.

Ah thanks for pointing out that you can access the sub version, it did seem strange. I was just confused because the Crunchyroll menu looks like this:

I didn’t guess that second one was the subtitled version of Season 1…

oh yeah, the way crunchyroll seperates different languages into being different seasons is infamous

Digimon Tamers has a magical moment where the kids realize a hand-drawn card has the same power as the commercial ones they’ve been using. it’s so good and so bad at selling toys I don’t think I ever saw the cards on shelves.

(the first shorthand in my head for this was “defying gravity” which I guess is not from Wicked but you know what I mean)

the way CR delineates languages makes sense on something like Tonikawa where they have like, 5 or 6 different dubs for it

I guess it’s silly when it’s Japanese or English

Does anyone know why anime scene releases are so insistent on FLAC audio that often exceeds the bitrate of the video? It’s baffling to me

comedy answer: anime is a lot of solid colors and as such video compresses easily so you can get away with a lot whereas fucked audio will drive you up the wall

sane answer: unless it’s an actual bluray rip (where most audio is 2.0 LPCM), there’s no reason to be doing loseless audio

(for reference, you can use Streamlink to send the video straight to a video player or to a file from CR and having done the latter a couple of times, the resulting output for a 1080p episode is something like 6-900MB)

I bet you would hear this as a serious answer on some forums but I’m glad sanity prevails around here

One of my least favorite types of conversation is when I complain about a situation that clearly makes no sense, and some nearby Dr. Pangloss who is considering the question for the very first time constructs on a spot a just-so story explaining why, actually, the status quo makes perfect sense

Once I vented on a Twitch chat about how the consoles impose monthly subscription fees just to play multiplayer, and the streamer insisted the servers cost that much

the great thing is most video issues can easily be soived in the player itself so those aren’t a big deal; hell, mpv literally has a section in their FAQ about fixing the banding in HorribleSubs streamrips. meanwhile, if the audio is fucked, it’s fucked.

speaking as someone who pays for a CR sub but literally downloaded all of Promised Neverland S1 after watching an ep in their webplayer (which is otherwise pretty okay to be honest, it even respects if the display is set to 24hz or a multiple thereof), I appreciate the priorities some encoders have

all anime audio should sound like it’s coming from 30+ year old tape

dangerously close to buying the cooper fx generation loss already

Fuzzy childhood affinity for Digimon Tamers and subsequent fixations on the Chinese zodiac and Palm Pilots: vindicated.

Konaka’s website for the show is still up here as a nice little time capsule.

In the Japanese version they straight-up call the final threat The Zone.

they passed me on the fourth time even though it was arguably worse than attempts one through three because they obviously wanted to be rid of me after I was incapable of demonstrating that I could or would ride to their expectations, I am overjoyed, my learner’s was about to lapse
