I’ve never heard of this before. I love the mech designs and I wish that Bandai would make model kits for these.
I wish the whole thing was as energetic as the first 4 episodes! I thought the rest was solid but the beginning is just great
Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Patlabor, Armored Trooper Votoms, Dirty Pair.
Oh also Aim for the Ace, Dear Brother, Rose of Versailles, Urusei Yatsura, Tokimeki Tonight…
There’s a lot of good pre-90s anime.
the 1979 cyborg 009 series is really good, full of action and angst
armour hunter mellowlink is the most mega drive anime
aim for the ace and dear brother have a similar “unending parade of despair and melodrama” energy to british girls comics of the same era
It’s true! I like hearing SButts’ favorites more than trawling myanimelist though. I’ve been meaning to watch Urusei Yatsura for a long time completely on the strength of its opening.
I was wondering if any of the Cyborg 009 series were worth watching. Turns out Koichi Sugiyama arranged the opening theme song.
I didn’t realize there was so much VOTOMS. I need more VOTOMS.
Ashita no Joe
Heidi, Girl of the Alps
Marco, 3000 Leagues in Search for Mother
Galaxy Express 999
Anne of Green Gables
Tales of Little Women
Future Boy Conan
Bosco Adventure
Thanks for all the recommendations everyone! I’m very excited to immerse myself in giant robots and idyllic countrysides within the next few weeks.
BTW, @Tulpa, Bosco Adventure looks so pleasant and I had never heard of it before, so I’m extremely grateful that you brought it to my attention.
Do Matsumoto’s other series have a similar melancholy tone as this? The movie is all I’ve seen; it was beautiful and tender. It’s clear how much Kaiba pulls from it.
Why don’t I see MD Geist on this list
if it’s not preposterously violent walk away
It stands alone as a melancholic narrative. The tv series, even with much shoddier animation, feels somehow more bleak because of it
Would you suggest digging into other Mastumoto shows, and if so, which ones?
I was leaving out a lot of things, mostly in the interest of showing works western anime nerds don’t mention often
Truthfully, I have mostly read his manga. Queen Emeraldas is very good. Captain Harlock is a mixed bag. Would recommend the manga before the animations for both of those.
The harlock movie, Arcadia of my Youth, is extremely well made if you can overlook the weird nazi content near the beginning
Thanks!
