I'm here. — I'm glad you're there. — We are St.GIGA. ~the sound of the earth~

I’ve been continuing to listen through these, and I’m pelased to announce that I’ve finally found an episode that goes into deep chillout house territory, “Music of Heavenly Body”. These DJs had pretty good taste when it came to that genre. They liked unconvincing synthesizer horns as much as I do.

I listened to all 81 hours of those St. Giga recordings and made

a big spreadsheet!

I listed each recording with its predominant genre(s) as far as I could tell, as well as a very subjective description of it. I also color coded some of the episodes, along this key:

Green = A+ episode, will go back to this one frequently
Yellow = Standout episode, worth going back to
White = Just another recording, nothing that stands out
Red = Unlistenable due to poor recording or other technical issues.

No problem! I made it just for myself, but then I realized it might be helpful to others too.

Renaissance music, lutes and recorders and shit.

great description, i can hear it already. this isn’t sarcastic btw, i like that you just called it like you saw (heard?) it

i don’t think i ever shared this here — a bit of random st. giga materials and ephemera and stuff that myself and random internet strangers accumulated, feel free to jump in if anyone else uses are.na (which i think of in my head as “pinterest for weirdos”)

I found a random Japanese person on YouTube who’s uploaded a shitload of St. Giga recordings that are separate from the archive.org uploads I linked earlier in this thread:

This first video is 6 hours long!! I’m only 23 minutes in right now but it starts very strong. I’m really interested in this length; I think this significant block of time will give a better feel for the day-to-day programming on the station than the individual program recordings we’ve heard before.

There are a bunch of other really long recordings on that channel too! Much to dig into.

47 minutes into that broadcast, an extended ambient recording of fireworks and children comes in OVER the already running field recording of ocean tides, and then opera layers in over both of those. Now that’s the sound of the earth!

I was talking to this person about their album and brought up the St giga thing and it turns out this album is explicitly inspired by these broadcasts!!

Oh sick, I’m gonna check this out!

This particular video turned out to be almost entirely classical music, so that was a bit of a buzzkill. But there are a ton of others on this channel, so I’m hoping to hit that 90’s deep house jackpot in one of them!
