Hi my sisbros (title is a fine length)

I suspect these can all be done via plug-ins, I’ll just have to get bored one day and read up on how Discourse plug-ins work.

Hi y’all, I lurked for a couple years at Olde SB and thought maybe now is a good time to start participating. New board seems pretty rad :+1:

can you make a plugin that makes you watch a 1 minute 30 second OP every time you visit the forum

Everyone is working hard and I appreciate it. Can we get some more color on the Topic browsing pages? or boxes or something. Looks really barren with just black background and white words.

Yeah, I liked default grey with black boxes rather than what it was inverted to for that reason

how easy would it be to put up a simple footer image? maybe one that does not show up on the mobile version. Not anything major, just like a collection of our orange and green pixels. I can see it in my brain but I don’t got the art to art.

Just figured out that you can filter for a users posts i na thread like you can on SB1.

Click on a person’s avatar, then click on the ‘X posts in topic’ button.

Here’s something:

I browse SB at work, but I work in an open office with a giant screen. So, I had an alternate SB account with settings that made SB less garish and inappropriate, so that it would be less glaring when I was slacking off, and there’d be no chance of NSFW images popping up.

I basically just turned the color scheme to the bland grey option, and reduced all images to a super small size. I used the same account for mobile, so the pages would load faster.

Is it possible to open up these sorts of options to users (reducing all image sizes or turning images off, alternate color scheme without having to use outside software)?

Alternatively, could we have a “work mode” in which all images and videos are turned off or made really small with a boring color scheme?

I’m not sure how many people would benefit from this. I know Jam was Predator Goose’s work account, and Persona might have had one too. So I dunno. Don’t know how tall an order this is, and I’m aware that I don’t know that that many people want it.

Wouldn’t mind, I already have image blocker running at the office so when I’m reading forums the density of text makes it seem less of a slack-off resource.

you’ve done a fuckin’ good job here

I find the thread listing to be really, really difficult to work with. It’s cramped (titles are too close to the rest of the data) and since it is missing the ‘jump to page’ links you cannot easily discern between long and short threads, in turn forcing you to read every single title of every single thread to find the one you were looking for. It feels a bit like a borderless excel table right now.

Some ideas to consider:

  • Give the thread titles more breathing space. Especially horizontally.
  • Remove or greatly reduce the size of the Views column. I believe that carries almost zero relevance and takes up already precious space.
  • Remove or redesign the Category view. In King of Posters a reduction to KoP and GO might work… might. Simple icons might also work. Long, always-repeating text does not, sadly.
  • Reduce the size of the Activity column. The information for Activity is already partially provided by the thread listing itself.
  • Center or right-aligning data that is on the right side of the layout should also make things a little easier on the eyes.
  • Also combining certain data into a single column might work, similar to how Last Poster and Post time were a single column in the old forum.

Hit me up on Steam if you want to discuss some changes in detail. Or where do ya’ll chat these days?

Ohh, and I love the way you can browse and edit a post at the same time. Awesome.

Yeah, that’s the one thing that still feels unfinished to me because botagel made some changes to the discourse defaults that he’s not quite completed. To be honest though I pretty much just use the new and unread toggles at the top of the FrontPage to browse now.

Again, if you have suggestions, I strongly encourage you to prototype the CSS yourself or suggest existing discourse plugins. I for one am not looking at this in terms of “building” a new site; it’s a migration to a new platform which we’re tweaking as we like.

Speaking of which, the domain move and locking the old forum are still coming.

Is there a way that the top pinned album topic in the axe could not have a subtitle that goes on for half a paragraph? For whatever reason it irks me.

Also am I still supposed to get a pop up just about every time I try to reply to something or an I internetting wrong again?

I’d be okay with deleting the pinned topics, or editing them to reflect SB rules rather than the stock stuff. Anyone want to have a crack at that?

I did and then they seemed to dissapear!

Trying to fix this right now.

I think it might be due to it being the first topic (which should normally be the one with the category description.

I’m stumped. Can’t rearrage topics by hand, and thheir order doesn’t seem to be effected by postdate or pin date. Tried changing the intro. Tried changing the comment attached to the pinning action. :boh:

I guess somehow related to activity it’s etting treated at the most important axe topic?? :boh:

Thought setting the ‘post excerpt maxlength’ to not 300 would help but I guess not ! ! ! ! ! ! ! :boh:

So was rotating avatars ever determined to be possible, like on ye olde SB? Or are we just stuck having to manually change them?

that won’t be that hard to implement, probably. but I don’t think it’s supported out of the box.

Well, we used to achieve it by using an image rotator site as the URL for our avatar image.

So all we would need is for Discourse to have an option to link to offsite pics for your avatar.

That seems do-able right?

I mean, not by me of course…

The category names are showing up because each of the “main categories” (KoP, etc.) have sub-categories, so Discourse displays the full category name for each thread. I’m trying to get it to hide the dumb thing when you’re “in” the same category, so it’ll only show category labels for topics in “subforums,” but it’s proving obnoxious to implement. Once that’s managed, the topic names can expand into that space.

We can definitely shove some of the other fields into single columns. Heck, compared to some of the other fun, it’ll be downright simple.
