Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

Is there a way to use my MBA keyboard/trackpad to control my home theater PC?

I’m imagining an endless series of cross-industry meetings where nobody can agree on a shared standard for DDR5 memory timing and at the last minute they decide to split the baby with a horrible workaround.

Or even more likely, nobody thought about this at all in the first place, and Asus ended up quickly throwing together a workaround after realizing some DDR5 RAM was already shipping that wasn’t within the expected timing envelope.

Shader compilation jank is in the same class of problem. GPUs don’t want to commit to a shared shader bytecode standard, so it becomes the responsibility of the driver to paper over the disagreement at runtime. Which does not bode well

we’ll never escape shader jank because a lawyer will have a fever dream and declare compiled shaders to be company IP

(I have unironically read this as a reason as to why people wouldn’t post shader compilations for Cemu on reddit, though that’s probably different because a lawyer probably could argue that and win. somehow.)

anyone know much about windows colour profile stuff

i got a new display a couple of months back and windows ui colour always looks a bit washed out, but games and video look perfect - can even see a difference between the actual video output and the scrubber preview on youtube for example. i just kinda shrugged my shoulders but i’ve had cause to run another copy of windows in hyper-v today and… my vm has significantly better colours than the host lol.

there’s a ā€œdell [whatever the model number is]ā€ colour profile installed by default, by the look of it… can you just nuke these and run a default?

Tabs, especially YouTube tabs, in Vivaldi keep arbitrarily crashing on my desktop (whereas this isn’t nearly as big of a problem on my laptops – which have the same amount of RAM as my desktop). Vivaldi’s support forums don’t really have shit to go off of. Is this a bad RAM problem or something I can potentially resolve reconfiguring some shit? I’d rather not have to buy another set of RAM if I can help it.

if you suspect your ram is sketchy i’d def run memtest86+ for a bit and see what happens

Synergy is old, oh paid-for now?? but one of the cross-OS screen-sharing apps is where I’d start looking

Sometimes it’ll pull the monitor color profile along in the windows updates like the other drivers.

Since it’s ok for games and washed out in windows, are you running hdr on a non hdr monitor by any chance?

lol

gksudo already exists and I’d been using it for years to have a shortcut to spawn an elevated powershell from a windows terminal when I’d normally be working in msys bash or wsl bash and needed to run a system command

feels like ever since wsl2 shipped they’ve been focusing on making all my windows unix workflow hacks somewhat normalized

i recently bought this

i really love this thing. the downside is that it only comes with 8GB DDR5, but SSD and RAM are very easily user-serviceable so i got a crucial 2x16 from amazon and popped that in there and after a maybe 30-second memory training black screen (shout out to parker), i got logged in and system info shows 32GB now.

it’s powerful but not too heavy/bulky, and the gamer aesthetic is thankfully minimal.

pretty stoked, i’m going to use this for music stuff as it’ll be easy to take with me and get VST sounds through the MODX8

Kulagin said that governments in jurisdictions other than Canada have been much more open-minded about the Flipper Zero. One such body was the New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell, which contacted the device maker directly following the rash of misleading videos. After investigating, the agency in January 2023 said the Flipper Zero ā€œcan be used as a positive, legitimate, and convenient way for pentesters and curious minds to learn about, access, and dissect signals and protocols.ā€

i use my flipper primarily as the world’s worst universal IR remote but i did get my garage door’s rotation in it

I cannot imagine an entire country being more wrong about something than the state of New Jersey

and yet

the Canadian government has been incredibly humorless about this stuff since a year or two before the pandemic, someone started whispering in their ear about tech policy and they hard reverted to neurotic protectionism

but I’ve beaten that drum enough
