21 for me lol. Too sick, brain broken.
SB means a lot. Thats why im still here. Wild watching the forum collective work out its deal to settle into where it is now. Nice to have this little island in the storm… An island is not where you wannna be in a storm? See what im saying. Brain can’t do this right now.

Good place, good taste.

Like i said to rudie at buttcon: I just assume anyone here is my friend.

Id like to thank all the people who have kept the lights on over the years.

Hell yeah yall.
SB forever.

Dont eat too much cake, get some sleep

Yay, selectbutton! While I was around for the first one and insert credit before it–I remember being really excited that @azurelore was as excited about the 2003 Ninja Turtles as I was–and even established a handful of relationships outside of it with people who are no longer around, it wasn’t until…four years ago-ish that I felt like an actual part of the community, a feeling reinforced by the meetup last year (yay, meetup!). While the community will probably never stop feeling daunting, I’m really glad it’s helped me open up and take some risks, and have a lot of fun in the process. Yay!

I’ve only been here like 4 years so it seems like i’ve missed several ages worth of lore/etc. I think my favorite early memories were of the first meetup, we’re all at a grocery store and just buying a shit ton of food and I’m like “what the heck is going to happen”

I am hosting Thankgiving today with two SB posters coming by and I really enjoy whenever a Poster comes around and I drag them around Tokyo and ask them “Could you quit video games?” And “top 3 final fantasys”.

Obviously I could and have said much more. I said a lot when my 20th Aniversary for the community happened 2 years ago.

Is Select Button Dot Net a Video Game Forum?

another thing: galaxy oddity is like if tvtropes was good

and i love the sb tradition of thread titles being either barebones and blunt or byzantine and buried in injokes and references

Aside from a hiatus or two, this is definitely the community I’ve participated in the longest! Two decades for an internet forum is no laughing matter. For better or worse, this community is a big part of who I am today, and it’s definitely kept me (relatively) sane through some of the darker periods of my life. If only for one thing, I’m thankful to have been able to see this small band of people from all over the world grow into themselves.

Let’s see how far we can take this thing. :gotohell:

I was gonna say “10 years feels wrong” but then I noticed the 2 there, that feels much better.

It’s good to have a place where when I get an idea for some mostly bizarre project like playing through hundreds of games in a giant bundle, making a LP for a 20+ year old puzzle game, or simply jotting down oddities I see on Steam every day I can do so without being told to knock it off, in fact people are often supportive instead. Something’s wrong with all y’all, but it’s probably the same thing that’s wrong with me so that’s why it works

It’s wild that it’s been that long!

Apologies to everyone I was a dick to over the years. Thanks for giving me a chance.

Special shout outs to the Monster Hunter crew, everyone who humbled me in Quakeworld, and whoever made that “I don’t even look at the graphics anymore” post (maybe that last one was IC-old).

I was never a part of SB1 and haven’t been on this one that long (2019). That said, I’ve been a part of many forums (even helped run some bigs ones, like TIGS) and this one definitely has the highest quality poster/post ratio of any of them. Shout-out to everyone who has introduced me to something odd or made something I’ve loved or just talked about something familiar in a fresh way. You’re the reason this forum is better than the rest.

more threads/posts we love!

  • the Hallmark of Movie Reviews, @thecatamites romm comm tuum (sorry letterboxd, you may have snarky one-liners, but you don’t have the ridiculously funny recaps that make you wanna watch the schlockiest schlock just to see if there are REALLY three christmas trees in 90% of the shots, if a character really is crabbing around in a romcom, or if the evil stepmom-killer-heist movie falls as flat on its face, or — it’s recapped SO GOOD that you don’t wanna watch said movie again, either because you’ve seen it (and forgot about; here’s to Kate&Leopold, a flick that my first ex loved!) or you don’t wanna jinx it and break the wonderful little plotline you’ve made up in your mind based on what you read. Thank you for caring about this genre :zeldaheart:
  • Nikkiland in Momo’s thread: It’s SO WILD to see what @daphaknee and all you brave dress-gamblers dream up (and a lot of these outfits are fever dreams come true, kudos to all of you Nikkiers). Made me understand what Forza Motorsport & et al livery creation, only for normal (non-car-maniacs) people looks like, and just :servbotsalute:
  • all the music-input threads: serious recs, live sets, albums, joke posts — my playlist has been fed by your inputs over the years more than any other source! I’m glad i managed to contribute a track on the tracklist of one of the SB Mixtapes, which I am still thinking of (Racing Across The Ruins of an Ancient Civilization) a lot when driving with music.

gotta get up, but there’s more to come!

I think i ended up looking at late ic posts coming from shmups dot com at some point in uh, high school and its been almost 20 yrs myself. I never got into a posting groove and am probably better suited to lurking but i remember the tail end of the ic meltdown/move to sb 1.0 and i’m glad you folks stuck it out, have remained a virtual refuge and one of the few bright spots of a net thats getting darker.

Just over a year ago when I started posting here, things for me had reached such a chaotic point after moving country, losing what (at the time) felt like a bunch of reliable friendships as well as my capacity to work a steady job and trying to basically reconstruct an entire identity for myself after better understanding my own brain and its recurring social anxiety for maybe the first time proper in my entire life post-burnout.

It may seem like a small thing but posting bits and pieces on here has really helped build up my confidence after many years of personal difficulty, not to mention this place serving as one of the few remaining sites online that feels like an actual community rather than just virtual real estate for some faceless corporation to capitalise off of…

Thanks for putting up with all my rambling, even when I’m at my most incoherent, and making me not feel like a total outsider when compared to most other spaces I’ve been in, online or otherwise. I may have only been here just a lil while but it’s genuinely been such a lifeline throughout and so many of you have gone out of your way to make me feel extremely welcome.

Every reply, dm or passing blood potion has served as a pleasant reminder that I do in fact exist as an accepted member of this place. Here’s to many more years posting god knows what about videogames (sometimes?) :alien_monster: :clinking_glasses: :alien_monster:
