Games you’ve played today: Fourteen by Kazuo Umezz

Wow this game is absolutely packed with instant death traps. It has the usual keys for a metroidvania (air dash, double jump, second air dash, triple jump, third air dash, etc) , but a ton more keys to protect against all these instant death traps

Instead of getting a ground pound to destroy special blocks you get some amulet to protect against the unavoidable iron maiden that teleports you into the ether dimension (instant gameover) or earbuds to protect you against a skeleton band that plays a music that will entice you forever (instant gameover) etc

And I swear there has to be about 12 unique goofy instant death traps of this kind in this game, every few rooms has some red eye statue that instantly petrifies you or some moving wall of spikes. I’m half tempted to replay the whole game to document them all

If I consider the first death as the canon ending, my pseudo-Belmont protagonist officially met his death by touching a sparkly red thing on the ground, instantly locking the exits and summoning a giant slow moving red ghost with a realistic face that took 1 damage from every attack and slowly closed in on him

I guess so! I’ve been playing the android port in bed. This is not ideal. I should really take notes of where items and recruitable dudes are exactly to improve my runs. Instead I’m relying on my increasingly spotty memory for incredibly minor improvements. I mostly make an end zone run with the prince for the ice crown while my other characters stumble around the map maybe getting dudes to help hold Doomdark back long enough to destroy it. Maybe someday it will work out for me.

Not that you’re wrong but also Niz might be one of the most loving games I’ve ever played.

I played about 10 minutes of Despelote and basically cried at its total beauty.

Kero Blaster has a really good touch interface and works well for short play sessions, with its little narrative vignettes sticking in your head for a long time afterwards, particularly while busy with a work task you’d prefer not to be doing

Million Onion Hotel may be my favourite experience with a phone game though. I almost don’t want say too much about it. Best experienced going in completely blind

I don’t know if the new Tomodachi Life game can capture the immaculate vibes of the 3DS version, but I’m extremely invested in the relationship between Heihachi Mishima and Storm from the X-Men on my island, so it must be doing something right.

Also it’s been so long since I fired up my Switch I was scared I killed it. My battery might be semi-shot. I’m sure it’s way outta warranty now, if it gets bad enough I’ll see what I can do.

Return To Monkey Island feels extremely critical of nostalgia despite being a product of nostalgia. The jokes are funny, but there’s a definite air of “why are you still playing these and why are we still making these.”

i played Titanium Court off my demo save and then whiffed it on the last stage.

I played 3 things that I don’t have much of anything to say about.

Beeny:

I like the other games the same people made like, Super Kiwi 64, but this one is very “nothing”. Completely inoffensive though and I’m pretty I got it for free.

Xeodrifter:

This was a nice thing to wrap up before going to bed. I like a short game that feels pretty good. The way you upgrade your gun is neat, but that’s pretty much all I have to say on it.

Feudal Alloy:

I wish I could say anything about this one, but the Switch performance was astonishingly bad. It took eons for it to load new areas to an almost comical extent. I’m still interested in it though so I guess I’ll get it on steam.

Finally stopped procrastinating my replay of -Craft games and wrapped up Brood War.

Overall pretty good, but for some reason the latter half of the zerg campaign is just nonstop macro ball-busting. The final mission took me SIX HOURS of restarts and reloads because you have to fight three AI with perfect caster micro. Would be a shame if science vessels constantly irradiated your vision overlords, or a templar hot-dropped and cast a psionic storm and got back in the dropship all in the course of maybe a quarter second.

Protoss and Terran had macro missions, but they weren’t nearly as agonizing as the zerg ones, for whatever reason. Zerg has missions like “two AI, both have the full tech trees of both zerg and terran” and “locked on an island surrounded by enemy zerg bases”. The last mission I actually had a good time with was the “decapitation strike with lurkers” where all the interesting stuff is in the first five minutes and learning how to micro out a win that way was pretty cool.

Up next: Warcraft 3 + TFT.

Look I want to like Titanium Court but every time I click on a new icon there’s like 5 pages of dialog that’s like this
