I had a great time with Shovel Knight

I felt encouraged to play one of the few frogwares sherlock games i have not played cuz of you talking about this game, SHERLOCK HOLMES CHAPTER ONE which is about young sherlock fucking around on some island in the mediterranean, and god this company makes the most charming games. there’s this guy named JON following sherlock around dimunitively calling him “Sherry” and taunting him into doing shit, I was like who the fuck is this weirdo, why are we back to having him teleport around me like Testament Watson? and then very early on Holmes gets this info in his mind palace

so Holmes has a long-lived tulpa named Jon as an assistant, who he sheds as he becomes the detective who will become famous, to replace with real human man John Watson as his lifelong companion. incredible. you cannot lose with frogwares

is jon frogwares finnegan

jon frogwares is absolutely sherlock’s finnegan in this game, it’s ridiculous, he’s just lounging everywhere and offering effusive commentary. if he beat holmes’ ass more and was irish it would be 1:1

I like everything about MegaMans except playing them.

I find myself weirdly very bad at mega man games and I very specifically mean the actual series not games inspired by mega man. I have what I’d consider pretty above average gaming skill, but for whatever reason I’ve been atrocious at every mega man I’ve tried to play. I have beaten the very first mega man on NES though, but that required a lot of perseverance and a whole day. In the past I have booted up the first X and the first zero games as well and after losing like 15 times in a row I just wasn’t in the mood for it those days. I certainly can beat them though I’d just have to want it bad enough and I didn’t at the time.

It bugged me here and in the o.g. Star Fox games how if you take any hits you lose your double laser and are reduced to a single pop thing that makes it a huge pain in the ass to kill anything? It makes it so you spend a lot of time button-mashing and waiting through attack cycles if you get hit at all.

Resident Evil 4 plays amazingly well on the 3DS. I always thought of it as the action game of action games, but the fixed over the shoulder perspective and the fact that you have to stop moving to shoot, as well as the right analog stick not actually being used for anything, mean the small screen and cramped controls don’t actually put any impositions of the gameplay at all.

Holmes learned to bareknuckle box just in case his finnegan developed the ability to manifest physically.

is the phrase “ninja-style” canon to the original sherlock holmes stories

the legacy of kain: defiance remaster added a bunch of alternate skins for kain and raziel

human raziel is all fucked up looking and his giant hands are funny

human kain has a permanent scowl and broken fingers

the shifters outfits look good at least

Sherlock holmes canonically practiced a stupid victorian “martial art” called bartitsu

Which mostly involved hitting people with a cane

the period equivalent of writing “ninja style”

spread out across too many games yesterday

sherlock the awakened - reached america where the framerate tanked. before that there was a reveal that one of the patients at the asylum was a (lobotomized?) moriarty, something used as a plot device to allow holmes to escape the guards and i don’t think i can explain how following this immediately with sherlock meeting and inspiring a young poirot as if it means anything makes me feel, this game gets me laughing

passenger x princess - i don’t know how long this is so i don’t know if im at a halfway mark, a quarter into it, or even close to the end but i did end up needing to take a break. i have felt down with lots of self-disgust lately and this uhhh… road trip to suicide pact between a terfy rich girl and the trans girl she battered and tied up is giving me an unfortunately warm feeling. like what is this, do i need a corresponding abyss to peer down every once in a while to feel OK? calling the night they share in the car dubcon would be generous but the rich girl going crazy and deciding they are twin sisters now… well.. shit. that’s good. hope this escalates.

to heart 2 dungeon travelers - i just really want more etrian odyssey and this is like, kind of fine in that regard. might get better once they throw the job system at me because the skill sets are very plain. however, and i had this reaction to trying the demo of the remake of the first to heart, i feel such violent disgust at characters and dialogue that its a good thing they let me go into a dungeon where i can beat up monster girls. i’m not all that sure what it is. the feigned innocence of the setting? blushing childhood friend coming to pick you up at home? the main character going stuttering apology mode while the girl screams pervert when an accident happens doesn’t help. like i want to see this guy neutered and leashed to quell whatever this disgusting feeling is. ugghhhh… i can just imagine some disgusting heartfelt confession under some distinctive tree. i want to throw up.

for some reason, Croteam decided to update Serious Sam 2 - again - with Steam achievements, so I turned the part of my brain off that makes rational decisions and played it again

I liked the part where I ran backwards and held down m1

bought and proceeded to sit down and playthrough Scott Pilgrim EX. seems pretty good, though if you’re not careful you can quickly become a maxed stat roaming avatar of death and the bosses are all kind of the same (they all have wake-up attacks with big ol’ hurtboxes and the gameplan quickly becomes baiting that out and going back to doing the deed). soundtrack is pretty good, Anamanaguchi found out about the YM2612 and discovered some real grotty, teeth grinding FM guitars, I’m pretty sure a few tracks were done by slitting the throat of a Sonic Spinball cart over a petnagram

UFO 50 is really getting in the way of all the other games I’m supposed to be playing right now. I guess to be fair though it takes a lot less commitment to attempt the same level of Rock On! Island 10 times than it does to play anything else I’ve got going on. I’m getting a hankering for a shooter though so I might do one of the really really short ones off my list.

so it looks like i beat love eternal in less time than it took me to beat some singular rooms in the original game.

i still think it’s probably reasonably hard if you’re not a platformer sicko like me.

i’m not particularly in love with this remake. i definitely had a more spiritual journey with the uncaring difficulty of the original. the horror/anime story stuff in the remake is cute but isn’t really my thing. it’s usually very hard to impress me with video game writing, so it not hitting the mark for me here is pretty par for the course. i do think it has some fun and surprising moments, but it doesn’t really culminate into anything meaningful for me.

the art and music and sound design are quite good – those aspects resonate with me more. my favorite track from the original game was used, so that’s cool. but the drab repeated castle textures and brutal rooms of the original sold anxiety and ennui to me on a much more visceral level.

wish more indie games would put sicko shit in their post-game. i was very recently complaining about this in the cocoon thread too.

Last year I complained about Mega Picross feeling unintuitive, but it turns out the tutorial was just bad. It’s good, actually.
