I “beat” B3313. I watched how to get the goal item on youtube and then went , well I might as well watch the ending. It isn’t much of an ending as everyone that has finished has said. Also gettting the key item makes the game harder so it is worse to explore and get lost in the game. This is maybe, the point. Simultaneously I lost progress one night because I forgot to open the mister menu (amateur mistake.) So I’ve “played” the game 3 times over now. Getting to the ending is very arduous and requires a lot of esoteric steps in the mad Winchester House Nightmare that is B3313.

I still want to play more! But given my current save state I might have to restart for a 3rd time. Which isn’t that bad.

I feel like I have begun to understand the game. So much that “understanding” is far out of reach. It is so dense and overlapping. Doors have RNG determining where you go. Everything about it is to make you feel lost outside of moving forward. “Have I been here before?” “Have I been here before, THIS PLAYTHROUGH?”

I feel the best way to play it is to explore until you don’t feel like going any further. It’s gonna take me 10 months to straighten out my thoughts on it (Rudie’s Fukubukuro 2025.)

Truly special. If something dethrones B3313 and King’s Field 2j from my top of the year I will of had an utterly fantastic year in video games.

taking a quick break from metal max after being informed about a vaguely-gothic co-op roguelike that came out back in december called penny blood: hellbound. never heard of this game prior to playing it, so i had to do a bit of reading, and found out that this is a spin-off of an as of yet unreleased spiritual sequel to shadow hearts? that’s pretty cool. combat feels like someone on the team played a lot of ys 7 before a design meeting. there is also a really cool offensive mechanic for getting around areas very quickly called “bloodsurfing”

thought i would spend a few minutes just to try it out, and that was five hours ago whoops.

I’ll post more about it later, but goddamn, Brandish 2 is very much my sicko shit.

IIRC there’s actually only two doors with RNG destinations (the front door of the castle on both sides, and the door to “vanilla basement”) but several of the paintings have low chances of warping to “incorrect” levels.

Anyway, good job! Personally I think the scariness of the castle’s architecture is a little overstated (the rooms cover a very broad range of moods, much like Yume Nikki itself) but the overall effect of finding new surprises is still impressive.

OK so all the comments on the Steam port of Spiderman 2 are about how the game is woke and whatnot which I took for granted because a) the Steam forums are a sewer and b) the Miles Morales interquel’s tone was very after school special, but in a way that I thought largely worked, in that it was about this upwardly mobile family in Harlem and the sacrifices they have to make and being a magnet school kid and whatever. it rang true, I thought I knew what I was in for. but somehow the combination of them going back to Peter as a protagonist and I think some unfulfilled desire on the part of Insomniac’s writers to compensate even harder has made this the most “I would have voted for Obama for a third term”-assed game I have ever played… like from moment one it’s hilarious, your first quest is to set up a good citizen app in the neighborhood so people can report all of the property crime they are experiencing, Spiderman is extemporaneously complaining about gun ownership rates out loud while fighting trash mobs, they made all of his friends firemen this time so people would stop complaining about an unrealistically positive portrayal of the NYPD… I really love it, Bioware only wishes they could lib out this hard

I never watched those because I figured they couldn’t be as good as the Raimi ones, I honestly kind of like how they’ve decided they should write this character as if he and only he has lived through 20 consecutive democratic presidential administrations in his mind palace and is now inflicting his disposition on the rest of new york

I played Super Smash Bros Melee for the first time in five years using a keyboard. It is an extremely janky setup based on some community recommendations and requires further tweaking since I cannot consistently do certain inputs like charge smashes or short hops. I think this may just be the fact that a game from 2001 is not as generous with its input windows. Feels like tinkering with it on the weekends is going to be my version of having a car in the garage that I get under and do whatever people do to cars.

i think while there are a few exceptions, most doors in B3313 are persistent and go to the same place. (edit: oh @L just said that nm).

it’s mostly just that the map is incredibly huge and confusing. using the wiki to help myself navigate the space made it at least a little easier to figure out where i was going and recognize old areas. the key word here being “a little” - because so many areas have multiple places you can enter them from. i do like the names they give the different areas in the wiki though.

also spoilers but i like this guy’s B3313 videos. i think he was one of the testers on the game so he knows a lot about it. he mostly just rambles but it’s still fun to watch:

Calling things “woke” is the most dogwhistlish thing and I will likely think less of someone if I hear them call anything that… except for Spider-Man 2 in which case I gotta go “yeah it is a bit much”.

lest we not forget the “exaggerated swagger of a black teen” line from that ign review that got passed around a lot when that game came out (at least im pretty sure it was ign)

you would think white ppl trying wayyyy too hard to be an ally would be less of a prevalent way that people embarrass themselves considering the offspring sang about it 27 years ago… (very sorry to those who just had to remember 1998 was 27 years ago)

anyways, ive’s been playing Shadow Hearts: From The New World for the past week or so and i REALLY need to talk SO much more about this game because it is the most “wow people on select button would adore this game” game i have ever seen, but i really need to eat something and then go to bed. (tbh i very much assume there is someone in this thread right here who has played all of the shadow hearts games, lol) so for now i will say this game fucking RULES and the only thing keeping me from being like “how did this not come out in the past 5 years” is the hug-every-wall-for-items jrpg design it has going on and a bit of the native american stuff not aging that well, LOL. but yeah holy shit. i just got done in the pirate area and will be going to las vegas next time i play. absolutely incredible and hilarious and atomspheric as fuck game so far

SHADOW HEARTS ROCKS I STARTED WITH COVENANT WHEN I FIRST PLAYED IT DOESNT EVEN MATTER WHAT ORDER YOU GO IN oops caps but 1 might be the most grounded in terms of humor even though its still hilarious WOOO SHADOW HEARTS WOOOO i am only an expert in it being good as fuck beyond that i just played them a bunch

they’re all worthwhile in one way or another but i feel like to the new world is REALLY into everyones different battle powers and weapons and shit. its so involved

when i close my eyes theres a 1 in 10 chance i imagine the judgement ring

damn what a coincidence i have also begun replaying shadow hearts thanks to me losing roughly ten hours of my life in two days with penny blood

yeah these games own and there is a part of me that laments the fact that rpgs with character rosters of conflicted freaks get reduced by the public as “weird j-slur shit” so developers don’t make them very often
