Have you played Astalon yet?

No but I will now

I was just thinking about how bad ass Astalon is…while watching the Game Center CX Legacy of the Wizard episode…so bad ass…

I will overlook a most lacking mention of the wonderful OST here as it sounds like you’ve made better progress than an idiot child who grinded for keys and an expensive something called a ā€˜deluge’ (me)

I like to think Battle of Olympus shares the same memory hole as this game but am likely to be wrong

I think I need to play it on a real gamecube as per my original plan.

Still on-the-fence over whether I enjoy this experience more with the fattest A Button ever designed for a control pad or the delicious remote aiming of its Wii reissue

What I am dead certain of is that Viewtiful Joe handles horribly on any control scheme that lacks the tiny gate on the C stick

oooh I have a wii-u That may be the way to do it.

First proper gaming of the year: UFO50, checking out more games.

and i finally made it out of lower junon in FF7R#2, yay… i guess. Wave Racing a :dolphin: to jump 50 feet’ish high was maybe the bizarrest of interludes so far, but there’s quite a way to go, so :teleshrug:

Judge Dredd: Dread vs Death is next up in the endless PS2 wishlist I kept when I was younger.

Having to arrest people and avoid breaking the law is a nice wrinkle in a shooter but the game isn’t too harsh with it. You are the law after all. It leads to some good video game friction where Dredd is just constantly yelling at people to stand down while blasting people’s heads off and arresting the ones that actually get on their knees quickly enough. In the aftermath he just zooms around slapping cuffs and reading off sentences as if he’s an automated legal textbook. Once everyone is arrested he starts immediately screaming at perps and creeps who haven’t been spotted yet but are surely in the next room. I think some of the satire is preserved by the game’s constant requirement to kill or arrest huge crowds in active combat zones. The split second a person starts their offensive animation at you it’s no longer illegal to shoot them so you just end up spamming the ā€˜creep!’ button to give them a warning before immediately shooting them anyway. Also everyone you arrest often dies because you handcuff them in the vicinity of zombies or inside exploding buildings.

When you reload your ammo just fills up like a gas tank and you can cancel the reload midway through with melee so you can be any % reloaded if you time it right. Essential since most reload animations are very long. They opted for Halo regen shields and a weapon limit (only one swappable weapon slot allowed since Dredd can’t drop his pistol – IT’S THE LAW) which dates it but the weapon roster isn’t amazing. Most secondary weapons are worse than the main pistol. I like the pistol ammo types but about 4/6 of them are gimmicks (ricochet, armor piercing, incendiary w/ very slow DoT).

I enabled cheats just to take the stress out and soak it in since the gunplay isn’t particularly great anyway. I’ve got infinite ammo and health but left the law meter as a little bit of threat that keeps me in character. It’s got surprisingly good music that helps sell the mood of the world. I initially wondered if it was Graeme Norgate as it sounds a lot like Timesplitters scifi levels but it’s Thomas Bible who mostly does licensed game adaptations. The general writing is a bit on the nose, more than I remember the comics being. Also the Dark Judges haven’t really been used much even though they’re the main villain and I’m over halfway through. It turns out they didn’t even make all the vampires and zombies that you fight show up, it’s just a coincidence. It’s given me a hunger to look at 2000AD art.

Dabbled a bit with a game I never got around to, Far Cry Primal. ā€œDabblingā€ being the key word here…I’m pretty burned out on Ubisoft fare of this sort.

Anyway it’s neat. It’s that dumbass argument from a few years ago where guys swore they could probably take a bear or wolf if they had to: the game. I shot a few arrows into a moose’s head and was swiftly and promptly gored to death.

I also saw a big ass bird just swoop down and take an entire goat out a lake.

Seems like an alright game. The caveman stuff is definitely a change of pace (you can light most of your weapons on fire, as a means of enhancing damage but also just to be able to see at night, though it’ll exhaust your club and you’ll have to build another before long). I’m looking at the trading cards and dreading eventually encountering the cave man version of the ā€œextremely funnyā€ Far Cry staple character, Hurk (who was mercifully excluded from Far Cry 6, thank god).

I will say using spears ain’t great. I mean they’re fine, for throwing, but these games have never really used melee in any significant way and your little spear thrust is the most pathetic, feedbackless thing I’ve seen in a while. I honestly wasn’t even sure it was possible til I killed some sorta prehistoric dog by holding the right trigger.

I think this is the first, maybe second game, where I’ve had to figure out how to get into the Steam console (opening it through an external web browser?) to download still extant but largely inaccessible DLC, namely the HD Textures Pack, which I guess they delisted because it installs to the wrong folder and they just didn’t want to bother to fix it.

Dunno if I’ll stick with it, but neat to spend an hour or so with.

im playing metroid dread and enjoying it so far despite it being uncreative beyond the robot horror bits

I’ll be honest, I’m weirdly kinda proud that Jade Empire is the only Bioware game I finished. I remember thinking it was awful, but I somehow felt I had to see it through.

Nothing was gained by this.

At this point Primal is the only game in the series I recommend and it’s mostly because of the setting. I liked the high lethality but very limited ammo capacity for spears/thrown clubs. The animal companions are ridiculously overpowered

i actually enjoyed this when i borrowed it from a friend a few years ago, but it does eventually reach the problem that all these kinds of games do: you essentially just keep repeating the first couple of hours, but with higher nilumbers and it all feels identical

I got the decomp Star Fox 64 running last night and WOW. Its amazing. I always loved the idea of star fox but had trouble following all the little ships and keeping my guys safe before but not so much now. Not at 1080p 120fps absolutely hitch-less. Maybe its the frame timing being dead on but it looks like absolute butter. Gonna play me some star fox.

Im getting really excited for the re-comps of other N64 games. Goemon Mystical Ninja, Bomberman, heck Snowboard Kids running this smooth is going to be exactly what my brain needs.

new year, new phone game post

Snowbreak: nothing new here. they had to hastily fix up the current patch because the last patch, where they had to disable the version’s main story because they did some cuckolding shit, was more or less a lead in to a new character, who presumably they had to quickly go ā€œokay we have to make the new girl not whatever thing our playerbase hatedā€ (also they had a guy in that story that wasn’t the player and we simply have to be the only man within 25 mile radius of the playable harem). and we got Bubu, a girl who seems made to satisfy the ā€œI don’t want to play the gameā€ segment of the playerbase with her kit and the foot fetishist segment for horny (which is like, a venn diagram with one circle visible, this is a game where they noted better foot models in patch notes)

just twiddling my thumbs and saving my gambling currency for the 5 star version of the worst unit in the game. any day now. they’ve been promising her for at least 4 patches, it’s gonna happen!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ: they finally added Miyabi, who is the kitsune lady you might have seen in the old original set of announcement videos for the game who does Vergil things because everyone making an action game has to have a character that references Vergil (or you can be insane like Wuthering Waves and reference the picture of Vergil sitting in a plastic lawn chair)

Miyabi is positioned as a special class of character in the context of the game’s lore (a Void Hunter) and as such, she is given a broken kit where she or her teammates help build up her character-specific meter, upon which you put her out on the field and hold attack and she does a bunch of damage, the amount of which can be increased if you had the foresight to pull her best teammates

using her is kind of like I’m not even playing the video game, an effect multiplied by the new game mode which is another roguelike mode except this has powerful character specific buffs made for selling specific characters exploring kit possibilities and making the player feel powerful, where one of her exclusive buffs is ā€œeverytime you get hit, dodge insteadā€

they gave her an ā€œimagine getting hitā€ buff

mostly the new patch has been like a soft realunch for the game, since they’ve all but nuked the TV mode gameplay from the game and redid the story content that used it, smoothed out some of the onboarding stuff and also they gave out a free S rank unit but we don’t care about them because they’re a man

also, this happened:

embarrassed to be associated with these people but also their complaining got me apologems to pull Miyabi’s weapon so thanks gooners

(no, that’s from an actual in-game cutscene. yes, it was voiced and dubbed)

Genshin Nomanpact: hi, this video game is probably going to get three male characters this year. we have entered the game’s horny arc and it only took 4 years and change. and going from the teaser image featuring silhouettes, one of them is a cowgirl (no, not like Chasca, the elf-eared cowgirl who summons a gun and flies around on it. like, a girl with horns and cow ears. that kind of cowgirl)

in the new update, which awkwardly dropped on New Years Eve/Day, they finally made Mavuika playable

MiyabiMavuika is positioned as a special class of character in the context of the game’s lore (an Void HunterArchon) and as such, she is given a broken kit where she or her teammates help build up her character-specific meter, upon which you put her out on the field and hold attack and she does a bunch of damage, the amount of which can be increased if you had the foresight to pull her best teammates

Mav is different in that they gave her a motorcycle. she’s not just wearing a biker suit for show, she has a bike she can ride around the world and also she fights on/with it. they gave her a bunch of cool animations of both swinging around her weapon type (claymore), which you never use because it’s not fighting on a bike, and attacking with and on her bike

so anyway, her best rotation is to spend 10 seconds setting up a chain of buffs with the rest of the team and using her burst and holding down attack and doing donuts on enemies

this old video from an illegal private server from the patch’s beta is 100% representative of her peak gameplay and is only missing the sound of tires screeching against the ground:

occasionally, video games are good because they remember that they’re stupid
