games you played today: winning eleven

this is also much better than the little I played of the first one btw… they fixed almost all of my complaints:

  • main character no longer seems virginal and generic, instead he is a belligerent Irish jedi who survived palpatine’s siege of belfast
  • lightsabers do a lot more dismembering again and are not inexplicably blunt weapons
  • less uncharted-derivative interstitial climbing crap
  • much better enemy variety
  • as mentioned, it feels like an open world platformer that is reminiscent of the new ratchet and clank now

how long did it take before you reached the verdict?

i would be far too ashamed to say…

i tried to disbelieve my lying eyes.

the thing i’ll say though is that i once explained my displeasure to a superfan and they told me “real mgs3 is only on hard mode and above, when you can’t lean on the silencers,” so i tried playing it that way – again – and thought, this is just as tedious and boring

The new wilmots is very good. Scratches two puzzle itches in one go, I love balancing multiple puzzles in my head to the chill lofi beats soundtrack. I like that (at least as far as I got) they don’t inundate you with too many pieces at a time, so it stays at a calm pace. Wish they kept the co-op in so I could zoom into my dude’s little block and push him around, but still works well enough having one person control lil dubs.

Also thank the big G, I’m three stakes away from beating all the stakes in balatro so I can uninstall it. Feels very much like I’m playing one of those slots games that they advertise on Tubi in between supermarket sweeps episodes

that’s… curious, as “jawbreaker” is a generic name

i just assumed “jawdestroyer” was a writer getting clever

also the game already has, like, at least five different systems of currency for some reason??

anyway, screen-recording totally crashes my framerate but i seem to have optimized it enough that the results are watchable now

and, this game is just genuinely hilarious at times

having completed a No Kills European Extreme playthru of mgs3 i find this inexplicable bc i think relying on silencers is the main strategy of the game and much of the series

the idea being that you can’t rely on them as much because there are fewer of them around and they degrade faster. regardless of this they remain legitimately game-breaking in 3. my orientation toward 3 is summed up by the fact that when I watched @Kilroy play MGS2 for the 20th anniversary it blew my mind to see somebody going around tranqing every single guard because it simply never occurred to me to play the game that way: “aren’t you robbing yourself of the fun of it?” and then with 3 that’s the only way I can stand to get through it.

I’ll never tranq or knockout guards in those games again, “beauty play” only from here on out

you’ll be surprised how much the possibility space opens up and how fun this can be when you do. not in 3 though, it will still be mediated by tiresome menu navigation there

Having bounced off Metal Gear Solid 3 and only making it like a third of the way into Metal Gear Solid 4, I’m looking forward to similarly aborted attempts to play Metal Gear Solid 5 and Death Stranding

At this point I think I can only hateplay Kojima stuff

I liked MGS1 for surprising me over and over again, MGS2 was slick and well put together. But when I got to MGS3 I found it a slog to get through and make progress. I went through some water and after a few screens noticed my health was gone and I couldn’t figure out why - i had to go through the menus to find the injury screen which told me I had a bunch of leeches from the water - and by then I had already used all my health items so the only way to get them back was to backtrack back to the water and get some fish. Well I quit because I had already sunk a bunch of time into the playthrough and didn’t wanna do it again. So much for the memes

I’m pretty sure I just played most of the rest of the game with the leeches

mgs3 is the only metal gear i have actually enjoyed enough to play past the first hour or so (and in fact to finish)

it helps that the game is way way easier than the other games, which i can’t really handle

but also, the weird-ass charm
