Games You Played Today ##RELOAD

yeah I think the level structure works against galak-z in the end, but it did work so well for necrodancer and spelunky I can’t blame them for trying

I finished Dead Rising 2! I haven’t been this happy about finishing a game in a long time, even though I knew how it ended etc. TK as a final boss was weirdly satisfying despite the fact that the battle itself boiled down to finding what specific barehanded move stunned him, then doing a dumb dance around a giant square while chipping at his health. I liked it anyway. It took me a good 7 attempts but figuring out that the Double Leg Drop Kick stunned TK was the key.

I still like Dead Rising better. I do not plan on playing Dead Rising 3 - it looks meh, and I would like to keep it in my head that Chuck and Katie (and Stacey) lived happily ever after. I might play Off the Record in, say, a year, after I’m ready to kill zombies again.

Now what? I’ve got “just finished a game enuui.” Maybe I’ll try Dark Souls again, or maybe something less punishing…

EDIT: My favorite screenshot that I took

Started up Mass Effect 2 (played the original early last year, liked a lot of it despite the many annoying things it did). Hyping up how you can import your character from the first game is a bit messed up when s/he is “killed” in the opening cutscene only to be reborn except hey, you can change everything about them. I understand it but it felt like a big cop-out.

Other than that it has been fine so far. I just got to the point where it opens up and I had almost forgotten how the engine suffers from the most nightmarish of loads whenever you have to use an elevator.

I got a bigger boat, I got a cannon that shoots a suicidal monster hunter out of it for MAX DAMAGE (I only have one dude on board right now). I got a magical dream snake engine which might actually be a lot less energy efficient than the plain old coal engine.

I explored an ice castle of doom and didn’t die but I feel like I missed some treasures. I drank people’s memories, sold a smuggled crate of human souls to some devils, willfully introduced an invasive species onto a pirate’s hangout island because they’ve always been dicks to me.

So yeah I guess Sunless Sea is my personal GOTY2016 thus far.

I got MGS5 today and hahaha that opening

God I love the nonsensical bombasic… I don’t know… Metal Gearness. Fucking giant flaming whale taking out mysterious flaming guy to protect Ahab Snake I mean what

It’s so dumb all you can do is embrace it

Really looking forward to this one

Wanted to continue on Shovel Knight today(ish) but I was tired from weird sleep schedule and somewhat chronic bodily pain, so I laid down and started up SMT4 instead.

Holy shit, it doesn’t fuck around. This is the hardest RPG I’ve played in a while. I’ve been putting a lot of points into my agility, but I’ve yet to dodge a single attack (high agility was the key to Nocturne). I’m three hours in and have died three times. Scouting monsters drains my resources and it’s easy to get one shot on a random turn. I may actually have to make use of the difficulty settings.

On a side note, I’m highly skeptical of classic SMTs with voice acting, since it can kill the tone. However, Mido’s voice is amaaazing, the actor is working super hard to be as dramatic as possible when fusing demons.

I started it up two days ago and I’m still not sure what to make of it.

My overall impression is ‘too much’. It’s exhausting.

The iDroid interface is also very unintuitive and ugly.

I’ve been watching a longplay of DR3, and there are so many incomprehensible decisions, from writing to design, that I had a headache an hour in.

This is the sense I got from reading the whole story and some of the gameplay bits on the Dead Rising wiki. It looks like a mess. Plus the story is soap opera-esque with the sorts of twists you’d expect from bad writing. Glad to hear someone else confirm it, haha.

I recently played through Dead Rising 3. It is very messy but I can’t help but find it enjoyable on a technical level. The zombie damage and animations are pretty dang good if you’re into that. The map is no where near as memorable as the mall layouts so you never quit have the same “I need X and that can be found regularly at these spots” kind of feel when you learn the malls in past Dead Risings. Items still spawn in regular spots but the map is so big you’ll never really remember it. The solution to this is that there are safe houses peppered around that have lockers where you can pull any item or combo weapon you’ve ever held that has a cooldown when you get to much out of them. I think its still a fun enough playground but you really feel generic ubisoft open world design at play.

I’m really interested in trying Sunless Sea so I’m also really interested in hearing you elaborate on it! for all of the talking here and elsewhere I still don’t really think I get its draw but it also weirdly seems like a game I’d be really into

I might start a fresh thread once this playthrough is complete ,win or lose. I’m 44 hours deep which means it’s far and away the most time I’ve put into a game in a few years. Probably Nier was my last big time sink.

The draw isn’t too hard to sum up. It’s an Elite-like with a novel’s worth of imaginative scripted scenarios, in a gothic style. The closest analogue is probably Star Control 2.

Star control 2 plays way better and not enough people have played it, though!

I got the impression that eventually they thin out how much you get to the scenarios vs how kinda dull the actual game mechanics are.

Alas, I will have to wait for Six Ages to come out to succeed KoDP/CK2

the first dungeon is by far the hardest in the game, the rest isn’t very challenging at all

I was hoping that was the case, but that’s still some poor structuring on the dev’s part.

I’m still hitting new scenarios pretty regularly and I’m deep into the game (that is if you’re referring to Sunless Sea). I can’t deny that the combat is dull, though. There’s basically no tactical depth.

Hey, I got a Paladins beta key, that’s the multiplayer character shooter launching this year that all the cool kids want to get into, right

Seems like a fun, solid game with some semi-unfortunate RNG elements with the deck building twist (though it looks like they’ve toned that down?) that will get totally overshadowed by Overwatch. At least Hi-Rez can take solace that it isn’t Battleborn!
