Phoenix Wright is going ok, the first 2 cases wheren’t that great but the third was alright, I hope it get better.

I need to satisfie my hunger for action platformer games so I’m playing Rabi-Ribi, it’s pretty good, but god damn I hate moe and the shitty writing.

devil daggers is okay, I’m not really feeling it as much as i hoped I would though

I can confirm that Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION still have one of the most satisfying Super Modes in all gamedom.

I have two games to talk about…

199X: (a game without mechanics) is really just a JRPG via RPG maker that takes out the battles and just lets you wander though the story. Given the rise of ‘walking simulators’ (good or ill) it made me realize how many jrpgs where just one step removed from being one of these games. But man the game itself, pretty nifty. A good take on the video game being aware of itself deal, and a damn fine 3 hour experience.

It’s super cheap, and I think a worthwhile experience to put yourself through. There’s some hitches but for the .50 cents I spent on it I think it will stay with me longer than a lot of games I’ve played. Sorry for being vague but I can’t say anything without spoiling it.


The second is they just relaunched Evolve. It’s stronger now. Smaller maps, easier to find the monster, but the monster is a little stronger. They made it punchier and faster. All good things. It’s totally worth checking out again.

Fast-forwarding my way through 999 to get the true ending. I’m loving playing it on my phone because (a) save states, and (b) fast-forward. Went through the first time with no help, and hey, everyone died. Surprise! Got the “safe” ending the second time with the help of a walkthrough, and now working on the final true ending.

I started the game thanks to Griffin talking about how awesome Zero Time Dilemma is on CoolGames Inc, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I tried it once before but didn’t realize it was a visual novel, so got frustrated with all the reading. Expectations matter.

I’ll have to play through Virtue’s Last Reward at some point, but apparently there’s a bug where it will delete your saved game on the 3DS, so…I might just wait until it’s on PC. I might play Steins;Gate while I’m waiting for the PC re-release.

Fast forward sure would make those games more bearable.

Yeah it’s a god-send for the awfully slow text speed. 200% is where it’s at, even for stuff I haven’t seen yet.

I finished Grim Fandango. I played it around release how ever many lifetimes ago that was. I’m not sure how much I had an opinion about it at the time or that was just being collected in a hype wave at video games approaching actual writing.

It is…okay in 2016. It is often confusing exactly what you are trying to do (especially in the later half of the game.) Which is odd, because the puzzles are easier in the second half. Just you haven’t a clue why you are doing them. Then maybe you stumble on the character that actually explains what is happening. I often felt like i had skipped cutscenes when I know I hadn’t.

Also all the characters being skeletens makes it a bit hard to keep them all straight.

Glad I got to play it again thanks to PS+.


I also finished Ultra Despair Girls. Y’all do not need to play that janky infuriating broken TPS shooter mixed with endless parade of cutscenes repeating information or scenarios. Did this have the same writers as DR1 and 2? What made those games great was the twists in plot and characterization. I knew exactly how this was going to go down immediately. Also there is a character that is just a pedophile pretty sure I’ve mentioned that in this thread before. A lot of the scenes were written as bad things happen or are described?

It has a decent version BUT THOU MUST at the end, but it doesn’t even follow through with that.

Finished 999. It has its problems but it’s got some very brilliant conceits. There’s a lot of stuff that are half-true stories about real things. A good example is that the real Titanic had two twin ships, but in the game they add a part that a survivor from the Titanic bought one of the other ships because he was obsessed with all things Titanic. It gives the game an urban legend feel, and it’s a neat way of breaking down the barrier between the player and the game.

My favorite bit: There’s a moment very near the end where you (as the player) realize that the main character is being controlled by someone with knowledge of all the alternate endings, and I love meta-game shit like that. It’s the best feeling when the plot and writing fits with the basic mechanics of the game so well. You can only get the true ending with knowledge gleaned from all the other bad endings, and to have that be canon…it’s very Homestuck.

Going to take a bit of a break from Visual Novels With Puzzles for a while because my brain is completely fried, but it’s a lovely game and I highly recommend emulating it.

The final puzzle is a fucking Sudoku though which is the worst joke I’ve heard in years.

I had to put the game down to laugh for a few minutes when the final puzzle came up. It is the most perfect dramatic moment.

yesterday i finished the original F.E.A.R.

in the difficulty setting i was on, the game played like a redux version of half-life with way more tactical expertise recquired during combats. i love that you’re more or less supposed to use bullet-time at least once in any given situation with more than three enemies in which at least one of them is charging at you (it happens a lot).

the guns’ feedback through the environment make shooting dudes in spaces full of individual objects and surfaces really satisfying because everything makes noise and flies and explodes on impact; some tighter rooms can get unseeable from the cloud of smoke made of gunshots.

there were a few cheap jump-scares but one in specific was conceptually interesting because you had to immediately fight the cause of it by instinct.

the ending was so dumb i was laughing out loud as the credits rolled.

Actually I finished F.E.A.R. a few months ago as well and I agree.
My 2 cents: I haven’t actually played many post-2005 console-first shooters but based on my readings on the latter, I really liked how F.E.A.R setpieces played out. It wasn’t about scripting the whole situation, but just setting up the initial enemy placement. Given the level design that takes advantage of the AI, many of the setpieces thus play out much more organically than you’d get on the much maligned linear cinematic shooters these days. My favorite setpiece was probably the rooftop ambush. So tense! Oh, and the elevator ride as well.

F.E.A.R. is actually a pc-first shooter, and pretty much the swan song of pc fps design

F.E.A.R. 2 was console first and you can kind of tell in comparison to the first one

Second one is pretty good too imo

I thought FEAR 2 was pretty awful and dropped all the things that made the first work so well. Also the ending is pretty gross.

The final puzzle confirms 999 is the final boss of Nintendo DS games.
